A round-up of all things Steam right now!

Quoting: "Hyeron, post: 6966, member: 223"Given the game is only available on Steam, yes you do.
Not that you're at any risk of being banned or anything, if that's what bothers you, and "hack" hardly depicts it. :)

I don't think that "hack" is still needed. Since Steam update few weeks ago it does not drop me out after Steam update as it used to. Either they remember original command line arguments, which I doubt or they just dropped it.
I guess beta participation now only means r/w access to beta forums and maybe L4D1/2 access.

Anyway, I finally tried TF2 and was very impressed. I'm using OSS radeon driver with HD4850 and it was running without glitches and very stable. Nice.

A Double Fine Update
By , 4 December 2012 at 3:35 pm UTC

Hopefully this is the beginning of a long journey of Double Fine and Linux, because I want to see the other games here. There are far too many problems with Psychonauts ATM and it's not even optimized properly, but if they are committed to making this version much better, I'm still happy.

And related to AF - anybody know of any alternate ways to download the videos? I've had to leave Day 2 over night because of the ridiculously low speeds I was getting. Should I just shoot Humble an email asking for torrents for those?

The OP mentioned TF2 is downloadable without beta. Do you need to use the hack where you launch steam store to get around the beta lockout?

Mystic Mine puzzle game goes open source!

One of the more brilliant gaming ideas I have seen (and as far as I can remember the only game I have actually bought, otherwise I have preferred OSS). My kids have discussed with me whether it could be built in the "real world", that would be a very interesting challenge…

Quoting: "liamdawe, post: 6947, member: 1"Ryan (icculus) has been active on their as well sorting out issues for Tripwire games like Killing Floor. A game I can't recommend enough, I've played a fair amount of it over the years.

Ditto. Potential buyers beware though: the game has some (quite) ugly issues with a bunch of textures right now. Gameplay is nigh perfect, but it's painfully ugly at times, what with full white pipes and wrong textures around.

i know people who use 8xxx series cards with 310.x without any problems.

Yep, I set up my father's laptop with Ubuntu and R310 drivers and it's all working fine. The card for the record is an 8400M. So it seems like an unlucky coincidence.

Quoting: "dimko, post: 6955"I was playing TF2 for a week mate.
You got laptop video card. They always suck, even on windows.so i am not one bit amazed. apart from SLI fiasko - i never had any issues with my Nvidia Binary drivers. In fact, i had mobile nvidia and it worked better under Linux. So before making bold claims, ask on user forums. Ask Nvidia themselves.

You don't need to tell me I am using laptop or that I need to contact them. Seriously, I am not that dumb.

I registered to their forums and waited for someone to approve me (so I could post) for months. No dice.
Then I sent an email to [email protected] with detailed description and multiple logs. It's been a month since I did that and not even an automatic response.

I don't need any excuses. The card is officially supported, end of story. So again, where is my support? Or do I need to book a flight to US and knock on their door?

This situation is beyond being funny:

So, yeah. I envy you guys. I wonder if it's possible to hack the stupid Steam driver check. Indies run fine on 275.

I got into the beta over the weekend. A Valve dev got me in directly after a comment I left on Reddit :D

A separate thing, anyone else having issues with TF2? There's a lot of small random freezes.

hmmm I can run steam still fine but it has not updated itself in a few weeks now, so not sure when these updates got in and how, but not via auto-update, unless I need to re-install/hack a newer .deb package but that is just a starter for the real download, not much more.

8400M G Ubuntu 12.04 x64. Initially I was running Unity but dumped it for lxde. Still not usable. I use 275.43 now lol. Anything newer has major glitches. 310 even crashes on login screen lol.

I know the GPU is not a beast by any means but with lxde I can run SPAZ maxed out and it's 'officially' supported even in 310.

Quoting: "Anon, post: 6817"As a side note, I assume everyone still knows nothing of Splot? I really liked the look of it, and it's been a bloody long time now. It looks like they're likely to have another game out before Splot is done...

Splot was pushed back to early 2013 a month or two ago. The FB guys are focusing on getting their WiiU stuff out the door before launching Splot.

Thanks for the reply. It seems it can't work because of the gtk2 dependency.

Quoting: "berarma, post: 6915, member: 131"Errrr... I've tried to build it but it isn't easy. I usually don't have problems with build systems, but this one is a bit messy. The script to install dependencies won't work, I don't like such blind scripts neither. I install cmake and start building. Now it's downloading chromium source code??? Having to build Google's browser is a bit off. Again asking for some dependencies I can't satisfy on my system, namely gtk2. I'm on Debian SID.

Now trying the binaries.

We don't build chromium; we build a custom patched CEF (chromium embedded framework https://code.google.com/p/chromiumembedded/ ) which is based upon chromium; taking a minute and reading the README might be in order to get to know some dependencies; otherwise you are welcome to join #desura on freenode if you have other problems

Ancient Axes: Heroes on Paper ~ Nearly 2 weeks left to support the multiplayer action-puzzler

Just finished the demo. It's quite fun and controlling two characters at the same time works surprisingly well (altough I imagine the full game will contain levels where it gets a lot harder).

Fotonica a first person game about jumping
By KIAaze, 30 November 2012 at 9:24 pm UTC

Ah, ok, I see...
Did a Google search for THQ humble bundle, found new humble bundle up, saw list of games, video, thought I had landed in 2033 where the Humble Bundle brings out cross-platform AAA games, getting more and more excited,
then saw the Windows only mention, ended up very disappointed. :(
At least it was indeed the only thing THQ called up in my mind initially, but I just couldn't see how it related to the Humble Bundles: the company behind Supreme Commander. (edit: oh, just publisher, developed by Gas Powered Games)

Well, no wonder I didn't know about it. No news about it here (very legitimate) and no e-mail notification. Nice to know they took my OS selection into account.
