Aww, I really would like to see more good games like these, M&M4/5, M&M6-8 or Wizardry 6-8...
But, sorry, these placeholder graphics are absolutely awful, its not even some kind of artistic direction or a question of style. These are just awful placeholder graphics, imho.

I'm not sure the films would have the same atmosphere if, every time the T-800 came into shot, it had the same "deer caught in the headlights" look that Ross starts all his live videos with.

I feel it's pretty safe to compare Ross to The Terminator at this point.

"Ross would never stop. It would never leave gaming. It would never hurt gaming, never shout at gaming, or get drunk and hit gaming, or say it was too busy to spend time with gaming. It would always be there. And it would die to protect gaming. Of all the would-be gamers who came and went over the years, this thing, this Ross was the only one that measured up. In an insane world, it was the sanest choice."
See? It works.

Doesn't heroic or comet have an option for cloud savesYes, recent versions of heroic use the new comet component to sync savegames if the game supports it.

Thanks for the link. That's got to be one of the best examples of "stream of consciousness" writing I've ever encountered. He was just all over the place. So many buzzwords and acronyms too. Pity he wasn't able to write it in plain language. That being said, the quote you provided was about as clear as the author could get.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. If I've understood correctly, Cloud Native has more to do with the installation (or delivery of the installer) than the day-to-day use of the o/s. It sounds like it might even allow for setting up your own custom installation, which is kind of cool.

The shader validation API is just a (mostly undocumented) part of D3D9 that some games rely on in one way or another, and in this case a bug caused a game to not load its assets properly.
By YoRHa-2B, 14 Jan 2025 at 1:33 pm UTC
Hm, just thinking if this D3D9 shader validation issue fix might solve this constant redownload of the shaders for the games. This has nothing to do with that at all, Steam's shader download are orthogonal to anything Proton-related anyway, from a DXVK point of view we don't even know it exists.

Controlify Is a really solid mod, and it feels like the game was built for gamepads when you are playing to the point you forget this game only supports officially mouse+keyboard.
The auto detection of gamepads works fine, and I've been able to test it on the Desktop with a "Switch Pro Controller", on the Steam Deck, and my nephew plays with both Xbox One and PS4 controllers on Windows using Prism Launcher.
Really awesome pieces of software(Prism and Controlify).

@Caldathras
The short answer is: they use Containers technology (which is used in Cloud) locally/offline (aka Native).
When you actually get down to it, their build process is remarkably similar to (if not basically IS) docker image/container build process. Then you as user just pull that image to run offline - or maybe build on top of it, like any Docker/Podman container. It's super cool stuff.

SteamOS will never have a Bazzite Portal (`yafti`) and its accompanying `just` CLI backend. That alone will make it so that Bazzite will always have a place as the "more convenient SteamOS" if not also "more up-to-date SteamOS" as well as "more customizable SteamOS" with how deep you can go with rpm-ostree/bootc and ublue-os/BlueBuild github template.
Even when SteamOS is out, I'll still recommend people to try out Bazzite because if nothing else, you can get stuff like Waydroid, key-remapper, OpenRGB, and others - things that people might not even know exist - to be installed quickly during the setup process. That's big.

That applies to everything in the kernel and therefore every piece of software. There's a reason why these patches take so long to be accepted in the mainline kernel.

Something trying to imitate external(Windows) behavior still runs in the kernel.
Something will try to access an edge case and render the entire thing catatonic.
