Valve's Linux Development Blog Goes Live

It's very hard to say. You know how Valve are with dev timeframes. I'm hoping that the blog will provide us with some interesting insights to keep us going until the client and ports of L4D2, etc. are ready.

Steam thankfully does have an offline mode. You need to buy and activate online but since steam is an online distribution it doesn't bother me, that and I have a good few friends on it is a bonus for me to be online anyway.

Being more of a single-player person, the one I am most looking forward too is portal 2 (+ portal 1, which I already played after getting it for free during the Mac Steam release. Might buy it this time, even if they release it for free again. :) ).
That and all the half-life episodes I never played.
I'm still slightly worried about DRM issues. I haven't played any AAA title lately, but reading about the direction Blizzard is taking scares me a bit sometimes. I know steam requires online activation, but I will refuse to buy any game requiring me to have an online connection while playing.

I can't see them doing a launch without TF2. I'm pretty sure that was ready for the MacOS launch as well, right?
It pretty much feels like it's their Source showrunner at the moment, as Half-Life has dropped off the radar a bit.

More and more supporting evidence. It's hard to divine exactly what their plans may be.
I can't see Valve taking Steam anywhere that Source can't go , and I can't really see them launching Source anywhere that Steam can't go (unless they're open sourcing the engine, which I think is probably unlikely too).
If it does see a Linux launch, Steam would have a pretty big impact, Bumadar. As I speculated during the Desura Linux launch (which sadly, wasn't quite as showy as I was hoping for), the real upshot of Steam coming to Linux would be its ability to highlight Linux as a potential gaming platform to non-Linux users and developers. Right now, a lot of developers feel that Linux is too niche and problematic to spend time on, and we already know that many users dual boot and use Windows for gaming (which I can't really understand, since I've been running pretty much every game I care about under Wine for the past 6 years). Letting these people know that Linux isn't as bad a gaming platform as they thought is what's going to make big shifts happen, I think.
My understanding was that the "Steam Box" idea (at least so far as it's been explained to me) was sort of like an open hardware spec so that vendors and individuals could build their own systems and use/sell them as Steam compatible gaming machines. If this were to happen and be Linux based, then I can't really see why that wouldn't also work on the Linux desktop.

We can also expect Rochard on Linux.
I've asked developers in the support site will they make a port know that Unity 4 offers this option and in return I was pointed at Unity 4 - Linux Export. In that video you can see Na'tosha Bard testing Rochard on Ubuntu.

I emailed Gabe Newell to ask what games are they planning to port and he said that "L4D 2 is first and then the rest.", and even though other people are saying the same, I still can't believe that it's going to happen.
About the Linux version of Unity, only other developer than inXile (who makes Wastelands 2) I know about that said about recompiling their Unity games to Linux is Wolfire (they said they'll port Reciever)...

hrhr, make it: valve on linux :)
i am still not sure it will be steam. and if it will, will the impact really be as huge as people seem to think? developers who want to do linux can do this now via several channels, will we really suddenly see a huge influx? i do agree that if it happens we will see that valve will also port their eingine over, that will have more impact, but again how much real impact? with unity now supporting linux thanks to wasteland 2 we not yet seen many announcements about more unity games comming to linux. unigine has had linux support from the start but most of the games comming out on that dont support linux.
time will tell.

The Kickstarter campaigns have a boost on the pledges at the beginning and end so it's still possible that they succeed.
They have much more to show than concept art and yet they struggle so much to achieve that low level of pledges. I don't know why but I suspect that people think it will be generic and uninteresting RPG. I think that atleast looking at the environments it has nice design. This is also one of the most impressive games made in Unity game engine.

Well the one thing that was lacking I believe was the ability to truly jump. Besides the game and the sequel are great and worth the money.

The thing is Rusty, I am trying to write these from the perspective of Linux gaming being a distinct industry. As such, I am not so concerned about it being the best we can get compared to others we do not have becasue they are not on our platform, but rather want to view it simply on a game by game basis.
It does have faults (like I wrote in the review) and I also wanted to save that extra 0.5 percent to give to Survivor when I get around to reviewing it. Not meant to be unfair but I do have to be realistically critical.
Still, thanks for the feedback Rusty and Bumadar. The best thing to come out of these I think would be more in depth discussion on the games themselves.

Nice review very well written, although i think prob deserves a slightly higher 8/10 given that there really isnt that much better on our OS. I found it to be a decently polished shooter which was quite good fun to play.

Android Console

I thought about pledging, but the hardware specs are very very low, it's not even close to todays consoles (ps3, xbox360,wii) and it cannot run those hi-end games.
I would really wanted to play Tekken5 , Street Fighter4, MK9 without buying an expensive console, but I guess this android console won't be able to run them even if they got ported to Android somehow.
The only games I would be able to play are the games I can currently play on my Samsung Galaxy S2 device, and some Linux games...
So it seems like it doesn't worth it for me at this point.
