Operations winding down
By Liam Dawe, 24 June 2012 at 9:09 am UTC

I find my updates from reddit, other gaming webstes, game websites directly and people directly email them.

I cannot update my nvidia drivers from an official driver download as using Optimus the official installers don't install on Linux as it's not the main card (the current available 295 series thats via a .deb don't support my card, the 302 unstable series don't work and the guys from the bumblebee project where no help blaming the drivers, so I literally have no choice).

Also to add to it because of my hardware my desktop will freeze constantly, sometimes after 5 minutes, sometimes it can be an hour, no explainable reason either - pretty sure it's a driver issue that will be ironed out (i had the same thing a couple years back on my old but new at the time pc) so that's another reason I have to now use Windows.

http://www.happypenguin.org/ allows users to submit updates.
But I also check GOL, because any site seem to miss a few updates ...

Where DO you find your updates ?
And the other question is: why aren't they submitting them itself ?

Maybe that's a smarter path ?

I am happy to continue paying for and updating the site software itself etc but it needs editors to continue the website going.

I'm keen to be around and continue posting stuff, but I'm too busy to guarantee a lot of commitment.
I'm happy to support whomever is holding the reins in any way I can (Liam, have you considered the idea of running the show without posting news - being an editor/overseer as it were?).

Oops, Julius, not Jasper.

This page looks like it might have some possible avenues. I've only looked at the stuff listed as being open source. I haven't looked at anything in the *nix section.

Yea, that was kind of my assessment as well. Ah, I might have to keep the speech recognition Windows only for now until I can better look at Sphinx. I don't think anyone will care about it, I often think I'm the only one that likes seeing it in games, hah.

Bumadar: Thanks :)

Hamish, it does seem like an ambitious project. I hope they pull through with it though. Linux needs more ambitious games.

I've played around with Simon a little. There's also Sphinx and Jasper, but none of them are complete systems on their own. Voice stuff on Linux is pretty immature (have a look into it though - it'd be pretty awesome).

Well, it is good to see they are still working on this. Still, seems like they are setting their bar a bit high. We will have to wait and see if they can reach it.

How do you guys feel about having some wingmen to bark orders to in the game? I'd like to add in speech recognition as well, but I only know of the Microsoft SAPI for windows. Does anyone know of a good one that work on Linux and is fast enough to run in a game?

What about dialogue trees?

good read, tbh your quote from part two does not suprice me, publishers, the big once, probably have little knowledge of linux and what they dont know scares them. windows is for most of them a simple calculation: game type x userbase x engine used x development tools = possible profit ...... with linux they are cluesless, they either hear horror stories or see kickstarters who ask huge ammounts to add linux and have yet to see real results. maybe with more game engines becomming available it will change a bit, time will

Quoting: "Bumadar, post: 4723, member: 93"right, first of all there are only negative answers in the poll, which is a bit silly.

One thing that may not be immediately obvious about me is that I'm an exceptionally silly person :D

Quoting: "Bumadar, post: 4723, member: 93"secondly, what I do miss a bit in part one a refrence to the history if neverball, to me the game was new and it was only through this post that I saw the link to the history, I know now its also on your side to the left but somehow that little menu does not work very well on an android tablet and its default browser :)

Actually, there are three links to RLK's full response on the first page of the interview. I'll see what I can do about making them more obvious and maybe put a link on the interview's second page.

Quoting: "Bumadar, post: 4723, member: 93"thirdly, a nice and interesting interview and I enjoyed it.

Thank you very much. It was a joy to put together ^_^

What a shame for the author. I got it during a promotion for free, which I thought was an excellent marketing idea. Its that same pushing crates puzzle we have seen time and time again, and its well executed, but I can see why the lack of appeal. I think open it up a little and use it to market another game in development.

right, first of all there are only negative answers in the poll, which is a bit silly.

I like your interviews, its not something I read when I quickly browse the site but more something when I am sitting relaxed with my tablet.

secondly, what I do miss a bit in part one a refrence to the history if neverball, to me the game was new and it was only through this post that I saw the link to the history, I know now its also on your side to the left but somehow that little menu does not work very well on an android tablet and its default browser :)

Unity 3D adds Linux support!
By , 20 June 2012 at 12:39 pm UTC

Unity Technologies has been working on a native Linux port for years, without any funding or help from outside sources. See the FAQ for the Linux support in Unity 4, which details information about the history of the port: http://unity3d.com/unity/4/faq#linux

Unity 3D adds Linux support!

Quoting: "Soeb, post: 4719, member: 170"It appears that they'll only officially support Ubuntu with vendor drivers, at least initially. Which seems a splendid idea, in all fairness.

Yeah, pretty standard. No reason games made with it shouldn't work on other distros though.

Also, it's interesting to see all the news posts on kickstarter of games now supporting Linux.

Thanks Hamish, we are very aware of the petition. We will definitely be thinking about it.
In the meantime, if you guys have any specific concerns about the LIMBO builds, please send them our way as well, as while I know that the CodeWeavers builds are not ideal, I would definitely like to make sure they are as good as possible.

Dirk Dashing 2 v0.9.2 is available!
By MyGameCompany, 18 June 2012 at 10:23 pm UTC

True. Except that I could easily spend another 3-4 months adding enhancements, tweaking stuff, etc. I've already spent 3+ years working on this game. At some point, I've got to draw the line and say "it's good enough". Otherwise, I'll never finish. :)
