The game looks great but the sole point stopping me from buying it is the "you must connect to us" to play a lan game. Really disappointing considering you get 2 copies for 19.99 (i.e. enough to be able to at least duel someone). I have zero issue with a one time online registration, but single player or mutliplayer lan should never need a continuous or even brief connection.

Alex, just wanted to say I rated Linux support very highly in this survey (even though I use windows) out of solidarity with my fellow gamers. I know I wasn't alone.

Thank you for the move!

Also, I'd like to express my gratitude to those of you who have backed me on Kickstarter. We almost have that 10th bit filled! :D

My goal is to make the game open to modification, and if I reach the final stretch goal, release the source code to all backers under the CC Attribute ShareAlike 3.0 license.

It's nice that we'll be getting the game. However I was extremely unhappy with this "poll of priorities" of theirs. I consider it unprofessional and very biased.

Firstly I'm crossed with the developers who mixed porting a game to other OS, an important decision, with obviously mandatory features like tile-sets and the likes. It shows absolutely no interest other than earning money and leaves the fate of the few in the hand of the uncaring many. Thus if the porting didn't make it into the final stretch (which it barely did, mind you) they could always say something like "there's not enough interest" - we'll obviously Windows folks aren't interested cause, you know, they are a majority and obviously don't give a damn about other OS. Hence the results showed just how selfish the gaming community is since almost every Windows user put all the other features as more important than allowing more people to play. It's just mind-boggling! In fact, it got me so riled up that I'm considering writing an extremely heated critique about their selfishness as soon as I have time to spare...

Quoting: "KIAaze, post: 4299, member: 16"It doesn't matter that much if it starts in windowed mode or fullscreen mode, as long as it works correctly and exits correctly.

But since a lot of GNU/Linux games still have problems dealing with fullscreen mode, resolution changes and multiple monitors, I would also prefer windowed mode by default at first, or a configuration launcher as Hamish suggested.
Whatever you choose, offer an easy way to change the default without having to start the game (ex: command-line option or text config file).

I'm pretty much at the mercy of the SDL library, since that's what I use to create the game window and go fullscreen. I would imagine a lot of Linux games use SDL, which may explain why so many games have problems. If there's a problem, it should be fixed in SDL - I'm actually rather surprised it hasn't been fixed yet.

I'm going to default to Windowed mode. And I'll add the line "export SDL_VIDEO_FULLSCREEN_DISPLAY=no" to my dirk2 startup script and comment it out. If users have a problem after switching the game to fullscreen, then at least they can uncomment out that line to get back into it.

Quoting: "KIAaze, post: 4299, member: 16"P.S.: Haven't tried it for a while, but I liked this idea for safe gaming: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=699332

THAT is cool. Maybe I should include a link to that in my games' readme files!

Update 5
QuoteThe poll results are in – we’ve had some 1,101 votes in less than 24 hours and the survey has capped out. It’s great to see so many people giving their opinions and so quickly, so thanks for giving us your time! We weren't expecting to have anywhere near this number of people voting!
Here’s how the poll results look (image at the bottom of the page):
1) Hire Level Designer (10.56)
2) Indoor Missions (10.21)
3) Soviet Town tileset (9.31)
4) Military Base tileset (9.30)
5) Reaper Hive tileset (8.78)
6) Female Soldiers (8.44)
7) Tileset-specific NPC soldiers (8.08)
8) Motion Detector (6.95)
9) Soldier Memorial Screen (6.71)
10) Vehicle Combat Experience (6.45)
11) Pilot Portraits & Callsigns (6.15)
12) Proxy Grenades (6.10)
13) Tall Grass (5.94)
14) Human Psionics & Blaster Bombs mod (5.38)
15) Mac / Linux Porting (4.57)
I suppose this shows the value of asking people what they want – more maps and tilesets, apparently! As mentioned in the previous Update, we were already planning to put more maps and tilesets in the game, but we probably underestimated quite how important they are to people. It’s good to know that.
Ironically, the two features that had the most vocal supporters did not do very well - the female soldiers came 6th and Mac / Linux porting came dead last. A victory for the silent majority?
Actually, it’s a victory for everyone. We’ll also be putting female soldiers into the game, and providing a Mac and Linux version of the game too.

and i think that particular line was located in update 4
QuoteMac / Linux port – The game will be ported onto Mac / Linux platforms for release, and hopefully for beta too.

I haven't used SDL or OpenGL for a while, but there should definitely be an easy way for developers to deal with such issues.
World of Goo and Steelstorm have been some of my best native game experiences in terms of stability and hardware support, although Steelstorm also shows up on both monitors when using a dual-monitor setup (better then stretched across screens though). World of Goo I haven't tested yet with 2 monitors.
Dual monitors is still a problem for some desktop environments and I don't think it's that common yet, so I don't mind that much, but having to restart X just because a fullscreen app messed up the resolution is kind of frustrating (I have seen it happen in Windows too though).

P.S.: Haven't tried it for a while, but I liked this idea for safe gaming: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=699332

mostly windowed mode. cuz some fullscreen games sometimes want to go over the 2 screens.
if alt+tab or alt+g to ungrab mouse works in fullscreen then fullscreen mode is fine.

By Bumadar, 18 May 2012 at 11:14 am UTC

I really don't mind fullscreen mode, what I do mind is fullscreen mode in a different resolution, if the game not closes correctly I end up with a desktop where my icons are everywhere except where I want them :)

Someone on the Linux Game Tome posted a bug about fullscreen mode not working on his monitor, and made the comment that "the game should startup in a less demanding mode". I think Windows and Mac users typically expect a game to default to Fullscreen mode, as that is the norm with most games. Do Linux users generally have different expectations? Should I be defaulting the game to Windowed mode on Linux?

Haunts: The Manse Macabre

@ Alex:

Judging from the pitch, it's an asymmetric turn-based two-player game where one player controls the haunted mansion with its denizens (chosen in secret) and the other player controls the intruders/heroes (also chosen in secret). The intruders have a secret victory condition, for example recovering and artifact, cleansing the house or solving a mystery. It sounds like there will be combat, maneuvering, magical powers, fog of war, map changing and spying (getting to know something that you know that the other player knows that you know, but do they know that you know that they know that you know?)

By Hamish, 17 May 2012 at 4:48 pm UTC

I have no idea why the website is not working for you, since the Wiki seems to still be up and the downloads are hosted on Icculus:
http://icculus.org/piga/Files/Soul-Capture/

It should run on Ubuntu 12.04, but unfourtantly Gambas 3 does not appear to be packaged on Ubuntu yet. You can grab it from a PPA from here though:
http://kalaharix.wordpress.com/2012/04/22/installing-gambas-3-on-ubuntu-12-04-lts-precise-pangolin/

And to think I thought Fedora was slow at packaging Gambas 3 when it came out...

You will also need glc installed, and ffmpeg for encoding. I will leave you to figure out how to do that on Ubuntu.

glc is the best program I have found for Linux game capture; all Soul Capture provides is an graphical interface for it.

What I personally would love would be for Soul Capture and glc to be packaged for RPM Fusion at a later date. This would make it a lot easier to install it on Fedora.

Well, technically you can do that... but I suppose then you'd never know about what needs changing until it's too late. Only other solution that comes to mind would be to do what the Indie Stone guys did and find a PR consultant.
