How odd -- I saw a second hand copy of this in Glasgow not too long ago. I remember my dad buying it for me randomly one day, but he didn't realise that it took up a full PSX 15-slot memory card for it's save, so he went and bought me a new memory card too!

I had some good fun with this one.

If it gets you a steam key, you can use steamcmd to download the data files.

#   1. Start steamcmd
#   2. At the Steam> prompt, run:
#                   @sSteamCmdForcePlatformType "windows"
#   3. (optionally) Set the preferred download location with
#                   force_install_dir /path/to/dir
#   4. Log in to your account using:
#                   login your-steam-username
#   5. Download the game files by running:
#                   app_update 7760
#   6. Exit steamcmd:
#                   quit

If you are using an Arch-based distro, you can then use openxcom-data-steam (shameless plug) to package the data files up and install them with pacman. Or just copy them manually to where they need te be (/usr/share/openxcom/data for openxcom 1.0, or /usr/share/openxcom/UFO for current git)

The Linux GOTY award is now over, here are the results!

I didn't vote for most of these winners, but wow, the margin of victory for some of them is amazing! Well done to all the games/companies involved!

Liam, could you add the total number of voters to the article? Also if there's massive differences in the nuber of voters per category, perhaps include per-category totals too?

Feral Interactive are teasing a new Linux port again

My guess is it's something set in France, featuring a silent protagonist (since Maggie famously never almost never talks).

I'm not sure about teh France part, but "recent" silent protagonists that spring to mind are:

* Doom Guy (I'm not sure if the most recent DOOM's protagonist is silent or not, and Doom is traditionally set on Mars/in Hell, not France..)
* "The New Kid" in South Park games (but those are owned by Ubisoft..)
* Corvo, from Dishonored (but this series is owned by Bethesda.. although the games were developed in France, so maybe that's the link here?)
* Chell/Gordon, from Portal/Half-Life (We have these series already, HL3 confirmed set in France?!?!)
* Jack/Subject Delta, from Bioshock and Bioshock 2 respectively. (No idea what the French link would be here though)
* Link, from LoZ (Nintendo probably aren't about to release their titles on Linux when they have a new console brewing)

I'd really love to see Dishonored on Linux, but I sincerely doubt Bethesda are suddenly going to start porting their titles to Linux. They've never shown any interest in us as far as I recall. None of the other games seem particularly likely either. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree with the silent protagonist thing.

Quoting: liamdawePost updated. Implemented some new code to display what you currently have in the article (only you see it). It has an ajax link to click to continue to be included if it's correct now, as suggested in our Telegram group.

That is damn cool, very nicely done.

SteamVR support for Linux looks like it's getting close

Quoting: WorMzybut I don't think it's the future of gaming. At least, not until it comes way down in price and a lot of really solid games come out for it.

Can't you see that in the future this is exactly what will happen? The headsets will come down in price and there will be lots of solid games for the platform?

What you are saying is that it's not the future of gaming, now. Which doesn't make sense ;)

I knew that choice of words would bite me in the arse. :P

You are quite right, it is entirely possible that, someday, headsets will be ~£60-80,and games will be so well made for VR that we will even forget that we are playing one. If/when that day comes, I will be the first to say "we are living in the future". :)

Quoting: numasanQuestion to you who are on the fence or don't care about VR. Have you tried it?

Yep. Granted it was a couple of years ago now, but it was still a proper headset experience. I won't deny that it wasn't a pretty neat experience, very immersive and all that, but I don't think it's the future of gaming. At least, not until it comes way down in price and a lot of really solid games come out for it.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided has some free content available in an update

That's cool. It sucks when content is otherwise unavailable to us, just because we didn't get a day one edition on Linux.

Observer, a new horror from the 'Layers of Fear' developer and publisher Aspyr Media announced
11 January 2017 at 12:03 am UTC

Hm, Layers of Fear is a brilliant horror game -- one of the few that actually creates an atmosphere of fear, and doesn't just rely on jump scares -- so I might get this one on that predigree alone; however, I'm not sold on the premise. I hope it proves to be a good game!
