Quoting: TermyThe other interesting question when deciding if it's acceptable to deviate from "no tux, no bucks": Is it Deck Verified due to support by the Dev or is it just testing by Valve?
Deck Verified is just Valve's testing to see if it works or not. If a developer hasn't come out and said that they're pre-emptively testing in Proton then they aren't, and they could break it at any time; it continuing to work is only due to the work by Valve & the Wine devs.

The more Tux, more bucks approach I take is that if a developer has said that they're testing their Windows-only game themselves in Proton then I'll get it when it's 50% off, but if it just accidentally works in Proton then I'll get it when it's 90% off. For Deck Verified games I'm willing to split the difference at 75% off because they've got some incentive to keep it working so that they don't lose that green checkmark in Steam.

Steam Deck hits over 4,000 titles marked either Verified or Playable
17 July 2022 at 1:31 pm UTC Likes: 11

Quoting: GuestIt's currently sitting at 1850 verified and 2093 playable, for a total of 3943 games according to Valve's official numbers.

Where are you seeing "over 4000"?
Steam only lists games that are currently available to buy. SteamDB (and the verification process) shows games that are on Steam even if you can no longer buy them.

AYANEO to have their own AYANEO OS based on Linux

Quoting: GroganI'd put money on the next version of DirectX not being easy to translate into our APIs, too.

That can't really happen. Mantle is the paradigm now, with Vulkan, DX12, and Metal all being based on it. We're really good at translating DX12 to Vulkan. Or they could look backwards, and have something that's like the earlier versions of DirectX. We're really good at translating earlier versions of DirectX to Vulkan. If they tried to use something so completely different to either that it would be a headache then developers aren't going to switch to it either: they'll just use Vulkan instead... and we'd probably get really good at translating whatever it was to Vulkan, anyway.

Quoting: TermyA shame they didn't call that service provider out so other devs can stay clear of such a company...
According to SteamDB, that would be Microsoft.

GPD talk about 'cooperating' with Valve for SteamOS on their devices

Quoting: wit_as_a_riddleI go as far to think Valve may offer manufacturers a percentage of their cut on game sales in order to enable them to sell their equipment at a lower price, effectively subsidizing it and making it more enticing to consumers than other's equipment that ships without SteamOS. It would be a clever way to keep growing the linux market share and their own market share.

I don't think that's at all likely. They might bung a lump sum at a device that seems particularly interesting, though, if it's running Linux. Valve did help out Oculus in the early days.

Valve gives the Discovery Queue a makeover to help you find your next game

Quoting: EhvisThe main problem of the discovery queue is probably the same as that of the "More like this" section. Some of the matches are completely outrageous. Go to the "Beat Saber" page, more like this .... Assetto Corsa. Right. If it can't do that right, the queue can't do any better.
I don't know why you think that's a bad match. If you've invested in a VR setup, then a very common use case for that is racing sims.

Similarly, there are lots of people that only buy the massive-budget AAA games, so one of those will tend to be paired with others of those.

43 of the Top 50 most highly-reviewed Steam games are Steam Deck Playable

Quoting: slaapliedjeI do find it amusing that Half-Life: Alyx is on that list. It does, by the way, work flawlessly natively. Played through the entire game with no hiccups on a 2080RTX + Index.
Your rig has the capacity to do VR. The Steam Deck does not. Hence all VR titles are "Unsupported" across the board by the Deck Verified process.

I've found the discovery queue quite helpful for finding games I'm interested in keeping an eye on. I also have Steam's settings set to never show me visual novels.

Linux share on Steam hits highest peak in years thanks to Steam Deck

Quoting: Mountain ManHow many people buying a Steam Deck but have never used Linux are going to bother trying to install Linux on their desktop based on their experience with the Steam Deck? My guess is very few because it's a console that does everything it can to hide the operating system from the average user (although it does give "power users" more freedom than a typical console).
More than would without it. We knew how great Linux is, but Windows users didn't believe it. Now they can see for themselves without having to go through the trouble and learning curve of installing it first.

Quoting: denyasisI'm no dev, and maybe I'm fundamentally not understanding the purpose of OSI and similar licenses, but I thought if you take an existing OSI licensed code base, added/changed/modified it, that your finished product would still need to be Open Source, right?
Nope. There are plenty of OSI-approved licences that aren't copyleft.
