Valve faces a £656 million lawsuit in the UK for 'overcharging 14 million PC gamers'

Quoting: LoudTechieYou both question if they even exist.
I had to go back and reread the post but I think it's clearer to me now. Thanks

Quoting: EikeHow so? Contact some developers, many should be happy to break those alleged rules, someone breaks them, wait if valve reacts.
This would only serve to prove they exist (which we doubt), not that they don't. As always, it's hard to prove a negative.

Right, but nobody needs to prove the negative in such a case, the plaintiff needs to offer prove for their claims.

NVIDIA exploring ways to support an upstream kernel mode GPU driver

Quoting: Marlockthe phoronix post seems to imply cloud VM clients need stuff isolated from cloud VM provider

we usually have a threat model in our minds where the host needs to be protected from malicious guests, but afaik the reverse is also important to cloud clients processing sensitive data

having minimal parts of the gpu driver running host-side seems to help this goal of keeping sensitive info exclusively in the VM, or at least that's what I'm reading into it

Sounds plausible to me! Not everybody might fully trust the big cloud hosters...

Canonical detail improvements the Steam Snap, work to advance gaming continues on Ubuntu

Quoting: morbiusI tried Steam snap when I installed Ubuntu 24.04 and it worked like ass, no games would start. I replaced it with the app from Steam store and everything was fine.

What is the "app from Steam store"? Downloading Steam from Steam? This might cause a singularity in the space-time continuum...

Anyway: The Snap version of Steam runs without hiccups on my laptop. The apt version had it's fair share of problems with launching the single game I play on my laptop (Hexcells).

The apt version of Steam on my desktop launches all games quite nicely BUT I always have to start Steam from a shell. Just clicking the icon which supposedly does exactly the same results (after showing the splash screen briefly) in a Steam icon in my indicators section but does nothing else. The only menu entry working is "Exit Steam".

I read it sets some (GPU related) environment variable that some systems don't like. So edit that or make your own starter...

Quoting: benstor214I perfectly understand that Valve Corp. is not my friend. This being clarified:

To me Point 1 and 2 seem to serve as smoke and mirror for point 3 - which may be the actual motivation behind this lawsuit.
I say this because both seem to be very hard to prove if not outright false in my eyes.

How so? Contact some developers, many should be happy to break those alleged rules, someone breaks them, wait if valve reacts.

Quoting: emphyWhat's with the white blob on the keyboard?

That's the sort of thing that would bug me immensely if I were in the market for yet another ultrabookalike.
Quoting: EikeI think it's the new Microsoft AI key, coming to keyboards worldwide soon.

Looks like the Kubuntu logo to me.

I don't recognize it as that, but you're surely right!

Steam Next Fest - June 2024 edition is live with lots and lots of demos

Just Crow Things (Native): Unplayable. Runs, but no sound and inputs b0rked. Constantly moves character to the right on keyboard, Steam Controller barely works, and Logitech controller can't open the pause menu. Only way to quit is alt-F4. Shame, because I really wanted to try this one.

Worked very well for me when I tried it some weeks ago (using an Xbox 360 controller).

Quoting: kaimanAs much as I like the game's underlying concept, after more than 30 years, it all feels a bit worn out to me. I guess history holds no surprises anymore, and making the mechanics more convoluted every time does not necessarily make for better gameplay.

That's the feeling I had, too. I guess they can't say "Hey, we finally made it less complex!" But that might be what I'm longing for. Or, maybe, it's just not for me anymore?

Man, I had days where I "woke up" from playing in the mid of the night, having to get up early next day...

Quoting: PublicNuisanceStuff like this rarely effetcs me. I actually prefer to not use cloud saves. I want manual offline options and to back it up myself. People can complain it's more work, and it is, but then again when crap like this happens I just laugh and go about my day.
It'd be nice if there were a folder where game saves were put by standard.

I'd say this is XDG_DATA_HOME / $HOME/.local/share:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/XDG_Base_Directory

In the end of course it doesn't matter much where it is, if only all games would use the same...

I allowed the game to send a crash report, they put up an update already, and (while still warning about the driver) it is working now!

Need to show that game to my little ones for sure!
