Quoting: mr-eggI've heard this before, but I don't believe it's even remotely true. It's just a thing certain experts (and "experts" aka media) like to say, without much basis in reality.Quoting: Kimyrielle[
People don't seem to realize that the open PC platform was a fluke of history that would never, ever happen again. There is not a single type of hardware other than PCs that generally allows people to change the OS or install custom software not approved by the vendor.
Yup.

Quoting: badberIn any case their existing performance problems seem like they are much more likely to be solved by using more of the general purpose cores than they would be with a GPU. The developer comments on that thread sounded like they aren't really interested in doing much about it though.Threading is tricky. Interest is all fine and dandy, but time and money are needed as well.

GOG might be interested in adding the game to their catalogue though, seeing as they've got other classics of the genre like the Screamer games as well.

Quoting: cRaZy-bisCuiTPS: I wouldn't buy the game nowaydays. On the one hand it's EA (they are rich as ******) on the other hand the licences might be expired anyways. Just get it from the web. Psssst... I didn't say that. ;)The copyright definitely hasn't expired, so getting it from the web would be plain old piracy. Good thing you "didn't say that", eh? Before anyone says "abandonware", I think that's a discussion for another venue.

Quoting: liamdaweHow about a single, eleventh "others" entry instead with everything under the threshold added up? You could list the individual distros in this entry's tooltip (using the <title> SVG element) if the graphs allow it.Quoting: operaSteamOS is missing in the Linux Distributions graph. No, graphs are limited to 10. All others simply don't have enough users to register on it.
I will look into a "view all" link so people can get a full list if they desire.

I think it should be "resolution of primary screen". Or even better the resolution you usually play games in. The resolution of all your monitors combined or a list of multiple resolutions isn't very useful. Most games don't even support multi-monitor stuff, and those that do already have to take this into account. And I'm assuming here that the purpose of these stats isn't bragging rights but the collection of useful information about the systems we use for gaming? So ultra-wide 21:9 resolutions are okay, but anything spanning multiple monitors is irrelevant.

Also, no publisher could ever "lock" a developer's IP without said developer signing a contract. As you've seen with certain crowdfunded indie projects, poor planning can also push deadlines, as it's pretty hard to fix those bugs if you're starving. Although in my experience pretty much every software project ever goes over budget and gleefully skips past the deadline.

Quoting: slaapliedjeGranted I also don't understand why the world even needs publishers anymore. They need to die in a fire. Mostly all they do is prey on developers, lock their IP and take the majority of the profits. Game distribution is handled by Steam, Gog, etc. So really, what purpose do publishers serve? Sure, they may help fund the initial game (crowd funding seems to work for a lot of games!), but then they push deadlines which cause the games to be released as buggy pieces of crap.Building an AAA-quality game usually takes several (wo)man-years or expert labour, and that's pretty hard to pull off unless you can secure funding. Sure, crowdfunding is a thing now, but making that happen is a lot of work in itself. An idea alone is not enough.

Ubuntu is a fine distro though, go ahead and switch if that's what you're more comfortable with.

Quoting: liamdaweSecurity issues with Mint and their terribly security policy, that's the biggest thing. But this article isn't really for discussing that ;)Ahh... I though that old piece of FUD was dealt with years ago. Just configure your update manager to install all levels of updates by default and you're set. That is if you happen to disagree with the policy of not breaking your system without asking first. Here's a really old article debunking that particular myth and telling you how to "fix" it.

Quoting: FUltra... because wasn't one of the things about Vulkan that the drivers would not be involved as much as they are in OpenGL?That is true, but that doesn't mean drivers are irrelevant. The drivers do much less and most of the optimization must and can be done in the applications themselves, but the driver can still be stupid and slow things down. I'm no expert myself, but I'd imagine at least the various window system integration (WSI) extensions usable on Linux (Xlib, Xcb, Wayland and Mir) might not be optimal at this point, and could cause slight differences in performance on different plaforms.

I'm hoping for a big discount on one of the bigger and more expensive titles I've had on my wishlist for quite some time now. Thinking of The Talos Principle, Shadow of Mordor, Pillars of Eternity, Divinity: Original Sin, maybe Saints Row IV / GooH or American Truck Simulator. I'd like to score at least one of them. If not, I'm determined to get at least a couple of the cheaper games off my wishlist.
EDIT:
EDIT:
Quoting: BeamboomI got fifty titles on my wish list. FIFTY. Crazy.Hah, fifty is not crazy. My list's at 68, Down from about 80 as I just cleaned it up a bit a few days ago. More sad than crazy... :'(
