By its very nature, Wine always has and always will need to play catch-up. It really is just a matter of how long it takes until it catches up.
Back in the day, if a game broke and it wasn't popular enough, it might sit for years without working again. At least for the time being, games are usually fixed within hours or days instead of months or years.

Total War: Three Kingdoms had a patch in December and they haven't updated the Linux version yet. I think they are more focused on porting to iOS these days.

So they are still around then!
They seemed to have dropped off the map the last few years or so.

ASUS ROG Ally releases in June priced competitively to the Steam Deck

I'm skeptical that this will make any difference. Both of these devices target existing PC gamers and most of these users also use Steam.

Quoting: RaabenQuoting: ObsidianBlkI feel the biggest risk to the Steam Deck is the ROG Ally actually being in a store.
Yeah, this is a huge deal, esp at an average Joe retailer, probably moreso than the appeal of a more powerful device. I hope Valve are deeply invested enough to keep up Deck hardware and not have it become a Steam Machine 2. I doubt they would go as far as to also sell them B&M but it would be nice at least for exposure.
(I also hope it has them eyeing an upgraded Deck in the decently near future)

Touchpads are a must with these devices because they play PC games and are not setup like a console device with controller first support.

I really hope there is a Stargate 😁

The timeframe for its release *does* fall in line with Valve's notion of 'soon':

The more games that support Linux the better the developer ecosystem becomes.

Quoting: Jarmerdoesn't ue4 work very well on proton? Sometimes I wonder, if that is the case, is it even worth it for them to do a native release? Or is that blasphemy to say? I'm just thinking dev time to upkeep two independent platforms maybe could be better spent on the game itself if it works exactly the same in proton vs native.

I still remember seeing Quake in a game store in 1999.
Before Steam it was very difficult to get games running under Wine. I remember breaking my system many times, especially in the early 2000s, trying to compile the right libraries and still not being able to get most games working right.
Cedega existed to try and make it easier to run Games (and software but that was an even worse experience) and even that only worked slightly better than manually trying to get games working.
In the end, I mostly just played Blizzard games because those were the ones that worked mostly out of the box with Wine.
It is really impressive today that I can play just about any game I want without having to do anything to make it work under Linux.

Wine 8.0 is out now with major compatibility improvements

I haven't played since 2005 but back then you would use the OpenGL version and not DirectX. I thought it looked right but I didn't have Windows to compare it to.

WoW without DXVK still looks kind of funny , even these days
Hopefully with the next cycle they can improve their default rendering. Games like Mafia 3 are pitch black :)
