Quoting: Purple Library GuyNever occurred to me before, but that's a weird saying when you think about it. I mean, who cuts mustard? It's semiliquid, you use a spoon. Or a squidge bottle. Should be "doesn't squidge the mustard" or something. Or "doesn't cut (something you might conceivably want to cut)".
The expression derives from 'mustard' as a slang word for a thing that is the best, and O. Henry has a character in Cabbages and Kings say: 'I'm not headlined in the bills, but I'm the mustard in the salad just the same. The 'cutting' refers to the act of harvesting the plant, i.e. garnering the best.

From Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. I love that book!

1 week from release, Steam Deck hits well over 640 Playable games

Quoting: GuestI understand all that, only some of the "playable" games really shouldn't be, as they have issues, like crashing mid-game or corrupting save data.

Issues that are yet to be fixed by devs should mean a game fails the verification completely.
If so, you really should file bugs.

But keep in mind that just because a certain game have problems on your system, it might work fine on the Deck. They are testing against a very specific setup.

Quoting: rustybroomhandleAnd the selection still seems super random. But then I keep seeing people excited to play things on Deck that I have never even heard of. So maybe not so random.
They are still focusing on testing games owned by Deck reservation holders right? So I guess peoples Steam libraries are quite random?

Well of course! My moms running a standard Debian bullseye, so unless the port was botched I would expect it to work.

Dev: Hey, take a look at this new interesting software I just released.
Linux users: Screw that! Let's argue about how the software is packaged and distributed instead!

QEMU clearly prioritizes emulating modern systems, so it's becoming harder and harder to getting stuff like BeOS or Windows 3.11 running. This sounds like a much better option for those computational niches!

Quoting: SolitaryOh, I wasn't sure how that worked. What source of information are you using? Because I used to see lot of placeholders in games where I would suspect the issue would have been resolved already. I just tried Yakuza 4 and the intro worked, even though it did have some ocassional encoding artifacts.

Oh, it's a TL;DR of that proton issue. I might not be up to date though, it's a rather long read.
For those who are curious, the interesting stuff lives in media-converter in the Proton repository. There's a short README and more information in the comments (and code of course!):

This is one game where I think something went wrong with the conversion process. Steam downloads a transcoded_video.foz file, which should contain the transcoded video, but it's just 16 bytes in size.

Playing the game and triggering the video actually dumps a 148MB video file so unless Valves are masters of compression there's a problem somewhere...
