Even RX 580's are going for $400-500 CAD where I live. That MSRP of $379 translates to $471 CAD so I highly doubt I will see it at that price. In any case that 128 bit memory bandwith precludes me from taking too hard a look at it. I needed some quick money around Christmas of 2020 so I gambled with selling my 5700XT and using my RX 580 until I can afford another upgrade thinking I could get one in April 2021. Well financial issues made that impossible and now I am looking down the barrel of any upgrade costing me upwards of $1000-1200 CAD where my 5700XT was bought for only $600 CAD at the time.

Thanks for the link. I read through it and came away with mixed feelings. They basically said that they agree with much of what the original article had said but then tried to accuse them of inciting fear in the Linux community. If much of what they had said was indeed correct then I wouldn't care about what it incited, I would get to work on fixing those issues. On the flip side they do give some valuable advice on how to mitigate some of the issues as well as point out that no software is ever 100% secure which I agree with.

I guess if one wanted to go far enough they could say that most games are closed source so we don't really know what they have or what they could be doing so are a security risk themselves. Although until FOSS gaming catches up a bit I doubt they're a risk I could totally give up.

Yes this "next generation" packaging is really the stone age packaging while rpm/apt is the real next-generation. That said, for games the security issues are basically zero (basically but not to 100%) since few games have open external ports or handle random files/data that you feed it like it is for applications.

They may require them but not from the kernel. On FLOSS sites I frequent I have seen people say they used 11 series Intel chips on Trisquel without issue. Haven't had the opportunity to test myself as I don't own one.

Indeed I am. Currently the only GPUs that run on FLOSS distros are Intel or a Nvidia GPU that is 700 series or older. Newer Nvidia and every AMD GPU I have tried have not.
I believe even recent Intel iGPUs (and CPUs) require firmware blobs too. There's no real escaping them from any major vendor these days.

So long as I can attempt to run games at 60 FPS i'll be happy but if I am limited to 30 FPS without a way to change it then that's a huge dealbreaker for me. I don't expect 144Hz but 30 is way too low and is very noticible for me.
