The Valve Steam Deck, lots of excitement and plenty to think about for Linux gaming

I am not that excited about this device. The amount of hero worship people have for Valve has made me literally filter "steam deck" out of Mastodon so I can stop seeing people fill my feed gushing over it. The screen doesn't impress me, 1280x800 @ 60Hz is not how I like to game. The storage is soldered on and can't be replaced. The battery isn't listed as removable so I will assume that can't be replaced either. The APU means that running a FLOSS OS is out of the question as AMD GPUs require closed source blobs, more than likely the wireless doesn't use open source drivers/blobs either. I doubt the gyro will be as responsive as my mouse for first person action games. The fact I can wipe their OS and install something else means that I should be able to run games outside of Steam such as from GOG or Itch.io so there is that at least. The price is decent as a Smach Z with 256GB of Storage would have cost me $1799 CAD while the Steam Deck with 512GB storage would cost me only $819 CAD. I may just reserve one for $5.70 CAD and cancel it later but at least then I have the option.

Rainbow Six peaked for me with Vegas and Vegas 2. Yeah yeah, burn the heratic, I just don't find the old ones very fun. That being said I tried Siege once when I used to fix computers and a customer had it crashing on him a lot so I had to play it to make sure it was fixed and I did not enjoy it one bit.

I really like the cut of their jib so to speak. Sadly the genre they make games for is no fun for me.

While I think this is an awesome deal it would mean buying the director's cut on Steam where I have the original rather than on GOG where I want to. Considering I want to give them more money anyway GOG it is.

If one is truly worried about vulnerabilities then after updating you should look into a Libreboot laptop and either a Libreboot desktop or a Power9 desktop. Running a BIOS that has closed source code is begging for vulnerabilities.

My eyes were drawn to one specific bug fix to nitpik:
"50041 Amnesia: Rebirth crashes with builtin vcomp140"
Who is running Amnesia: Rebirth using Wine and why ? There's a native version. I haven't heard anything saying it sucked performance wise. My issue is the time it spent fixing that bug could have been spent fixing bugs for games that we actually need Wine for. I've reported a half dozen bugs to Wine in the last few years, none of which even got so much as a single response or fix but they're busy fixing stuff for games with a native version.

I completly agree about the cost of Power9 being out of most peoples budgets (incuding my own) but at the end of the day if I want off of this x86 closed source vulnerability ride that never ends then I can go with Power9 or RISC-V. I plan to do both eventually. Won't be any time soon but as soon as I can save up the $5000 i'll need then i'd buy a Talos II from Raptor in an instant. It will be easier to get a HiFive Unmatched to get a RISC-V system going as that will only cost me $1000.

Quoting: slaapliedjeI seriously would love a Power9 system, they are just a but too expensive for my tastes...
I have a Fractal Design Define R6. Love the case, best I have ever owned!

I am actually fine with them only having an Intel GPU as that works better on FLOSS distros anyway. With so many manufacturers to choose from offering Linux support for their computers it is tough to say I would choose Entroware though.
At this point Purism; System76; Star Labs all offer core boot options on some of their systems. Retro Freedom; Vikings and Techoethical offer me Libreboot. Think Penguin tests their systems on FLOSS distros such as Trisquel so I know they work with that. Raptor Computing and SiFive offer me non X86 options such as Risc-V and Power9. Framework offers me the ability to swap dongles. Entroware doesn't offer me any of those which leaves them in no mans land for me.
