Interplanetary: Enhanced Edition released, unfortunately it’s not working properly on Linux

Quoting: GuestThese are Unity bugs you can work around. I made this post, which they then put in their FAQ :p

The Unity bug is only part of it. I'll add the workaround to the article but my problems went beyond that. Tooltips like when you hover over techs or buildings are messed up and don't show stats or explanations. I was in contact with them around the initial launch and sent them screenshots, so they know what's up.

Revisiting Tyranny a few months and patches later

Quoting: mcphailDo you regret doing multiple playthroughs before the denouement DLC is released? Will you be able to go back to your cache of old saves and complete the DLC with your various characters? I'm really tempted by this game, but feel I should delay until the complete experience has been released...
Regret? Nah. If I'm brutally honest I would have normally waited until more story content dropped to play again but the opportunity to cover the Tales from the Tiers came up and, well, figured I might as well make the most of the chance since Bastard's Wound has no release date. A few months from now I think I'll be able to stomach another go from scratch, if necessary. But I doubt it'll come to that. The game saves per character and there's plenty of saves, so I could be cheeky and load something up, depending on what the new content actually does and when in the game it kicks in.

Not to sound too pessimistic but, going by the press release, I don't think Bastard's Wound will be that big of an expansion or will fundamentally alter the basic structure of the game. But would love to be proven wrong and see the storytelling complaints addressed.

Quoting: UltraAltesBrotBeen thinking about buying the game for a longer time now. I'll be waiting for the upcoming patch/DLC now, too. Thank you very much for your elaborate article, BTRE! <3
Thanks, I tried not to drone on too much since it's easy to get lost in nitpicks and could have easily written a few thousand words more dissecting every system :P

STARDROP, a first person sci-fi adventure game, may be coming to Linux

Quoting: JoureSo right now once I am able to, I will attempt to port the game and hopefully be able to get some feedback.
I have incredibly limited experience with Linux so if anyone here would be able and willing to perhaps help me troubleshooting any issues that might arise. I also have no experience with UE4 either regarding how it runs on Linux.

If you mean testers, there'll be plenty of people interested in our community with helping out. Linux users are, more often than not, good at troubleshooting. PM me or Liam, pop into our IRC, create a forum post or whatever you feel is most appropriate when the time comes.

If you mean people knowledgeable with UE4 as developers: there's a few people who contribute to the engine on IRC, as well. They may be able to help you out with any problems you bump into.

Either way, good luck and looking forward to seeing how things turn out!

GOG adds a bunch of NEO GEO classics, some have Linux support

Quoting: zimplex1I enjoy piracy quite a bit, but to each their own. However with old retro games like these and others, I really don't consider it piracy at all. I mean most of these games the developers/publishers are either dead or have moved on to the point that they don't do anything with or care about those IP anymore.

Refer to the rules. There will be no more talk about how much you enjoy piracy, consider this a warning. This is a legal way of obtaining games that are no longer in physical form and if you don't agree, well, tough but your entitlement has no place here.

Dying Light & Dead Island Definitive Edition might soon work on Mesa

Quoting: obedlinkThere's another games that doesn't run on Mesa; Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition.
I hope it will run soon.
It already does. The shim will never and should never be incorporated into Mesa because it's not an actual bug. The developer needs to fix something on their end. But chances are slim of that since Larian really doesn't seem to care for Linux at all, given their track record. Less so for Mesa users since we're a tiny sliver of the already small Linux market. It's also likely they no longer have a Linux developer given their post-launch silence and no mentions of Linux support for their upcoming sequel. But you can definitely play the game if you want to.

Abbreviation of "applications".

Quoting: KohriasThanks for all the great articles BTRE!
No problem! Though I'm just really covering for Liam and doing a lot of what he'd be writing about, since he's taking a little time off today.

The developers of Mantis Burn Racing are open to bringing the game to Linux, if there’s enough interest

Quoting: SalvatosA little redundant, yet this article has already spurred two more pages of support posts in the thread so I guess GOL has a lot of new readers?
Hah, you're totally right. Can't believe I missed that. I was asked to write it up and among the various things I had to do, I forgot to check if there were pre-existing articles. D'oh! Still, seems to have been for the best so all's well that ends well or something :P

Linux gamers on Arch may want to hold off on updating due to openssl breaking some games (updated)
24 April 2017 at 9:59 pm UTC

Quoting: STiATSo you say it broke between 1.0.2.k-2 and 1.0.2.k-3?

That would be the versioned symbol patch breaking things... which shouldn't be.

https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/tree/trunk/openssl-1.0-versioned-symbols.patch?h=packages/openssl-1.0

Seems that the package maintainers are aware of this as per the link posted earlier. Guess we'll see what the longer term solution will be.

Quoting: WorMzyI'm not sure how you managed this. Curl has been rebuilt against openssl 1.1.0.e-1 (libssl.so.1.1.0), removing it (by downgrading openssl) will cause pacman to break with "error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.1.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory".

Downgrading is not a solution, and just downgrading one package amounts to a partial upgrade.

libssl.so.1.1 is provided by the package openssl (in Core) as is libcrypto.so and libcrypto.so.1.1. Most of the things pointed out by you depend on these libraries.

These games, on the other hand, depend on libraries from another package entirely. openssl-1.0 (in Extra), which provides things like libcrpyto.so.1.0.0 and libssl.so.1.0.0. They're not the same thing and I think that this is where our misunderstanding is coming from.

Though yeah, I will concede that downgrading packages is not much of a solution and has its risks. And people should generally not be encouraged to do so blindly. Which is why I suggested that Liam add a disclaimer. But in this case, I still haven't had any errors of any sort.

Quoting: WorMzyDon't downgrade your openssl package, you'll break everything that now depends on the new soname (including pacman! Well done!).

Not true in this instance. openssl is at its latest version on my system (1.1.0.e-1) and I only downgraded openssl-1.0 to 1.0.2.k-2. No breakage to either pacman or anything else insofar I can tell. This is after rebooting and explicitly checking if I could still install, sync and whatever else with pacman after downgrading. And things like Mad Max and Civ 6 work. You may be right in general about downgrading packages but this is a simple workaround if you're too impatient to wait until they fix this.
