Well, at least this one doesn't involve having to watch 3.5 hours of what's clearly the Dorito Pope's childhood imaginings of what a legitimate gaming awards-ceremony would look like, made real now he has the money to do so.

Xfce 4.18 desktop is finally here

I love Xfce - it's what I've used for 13 of the 14 years I've been a Linux user (I used KDE for the first year, but it was a bit overkill for my requirements), and it consistently does what I want it to do whilst staying out of my way when I need it to. Always delighted to see it improve!

GOG are giving away Ghost of a Tale during their 2022 Winter Sale

I'm not really much of an RPGs person, but I had to grab this - mouse stories and movies like An American Tail, The Rescuers, Stuart Little, and some of the Redwall books rank amongst my all time favourites (and you could probably put the likes of The Borrowers adjacent to that, too, due to a shared perspective on the world), so the lore behind this one is appealing. Thanks for the heads-up, Liam!

Dwarf Fortress arrives on Steam, works on Linux desktop and Steam Deck
6 December 2022 at 7:15 pm UTC Likes: 2

Dwarf Fortress isn't my sort of game, but I've known people who absolutely swear by it and who've shared some very amusing stories over the years, so this is really nice to see.

There'll soon be officially-licensed merchandise from Fangamer, too!

Quoting: QuillFor me it is one of the best games ever!

If you want to learn more about DF FUN, you should look for a "Boatmurdered" (usually in .pdf somewhere on the net, probably in archives of the game wiki). It's a brief history of one fortress.
It's on Let's Play Archive, here - a fine piece of entertainment in its own right, to be sure. I revisited it for a re-read recently, since the original was still ongoing back when I last did so, and it was great to finally see how it ended!

There are also an assortment of dramatic readings on YouTube, but I haven't listened to any of those so I can't speak to their quality.

Quoting: fireplaceThe redirect links you listed are from an ad tracker company with a bad privacy policy. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but you should just put out the direct link because it's listed on EasyList and 99% of ad blockers use that.
GOL is always transparent about that. This is shown above all articles on the site;

Quoting: based92% off, am I missing something?
I mean I might get it, it's a good offer, but this is not a giveaway

Edit: apparently sold out
Quoting: Liam DaweThey only just sent out the email for it, shows correctly for me at 100% off.
I think I see the problem: Plain regular Garfield Kart is 92% off, whereas the giveaway is for Garfield Kart - Furious Racing.

Quoting: hardpenguinGo fix it now :D
With this, it's like Garfield Minus Garfield, except with the price.

Steam Deck wins Best Gaming Hardware at the 40th Golden Joystick Awards
24 November 2022 at 1:53 pm UTC Likes: 3

I stopped voting in stuff like The Golden Joysticks after I saw people organising to try to rig/bot the polls about 15-odd years ago. That said, I'm sure that they have a handle on that sort of thing, and it's nice to see the Steam Deck get an "ordinary people dig this"-type award out of it.

Nintendo goes after SteamGridDB, likely for people doing emulation on Steam Deck
23 November 2022 at 2:07 am UTC

Quoting: Purple Library GuySo, like, one question in my mind . . . is Nintendo making this stuff available in any other way? Can you buy the games from Nintendo? I'm thinking probably not.
Can't comment on everything they might've targetted, but the games listed in the GOL article are all recent (last five years) or brand-new releases, and all are currently available.

Sonic Frontiers works on Steam Deck and Linux desktop although it has issues

Quoting: atomicwritesSo the performance issues are definitely due to the compatibility layer, on the same machine (with a GTX 1660S so not super high end) it is basically pinned at 60fps if I boot into Windows, but running in proton it's mostly around 30 with 40 sometimes and occasional dips to 20 or less, also tons of stuttering during fights.
Quoting: mark348I really like this game, but it needs to be improved performance-wise and hopefully in terms of content.
It could be worse, I guess - there was a stream last night of the Windows version, by a member of a YouTube group that Sega is collaborating with to promote this game, and the game crashed out so badly that the stream devolved into random karaoke and rumours that the title had fried the streamer's graphics-card! That said, I assume that the rumours were hyperbolic - I've never heard of a badly-optimised game frying a graphics-card before.
