Turbo Golf Racing could be the next multiplayer hit

Oh this looks fab. Rocket League being bought up by Epic left a gap, and though this isn't the same thing, for me the mechanics being broadly similar is enough, so I'm really looking forward to seeing more about this one.

Monster collecting game Cassette Beasts shows off the powerful fusion system

Quoting: eldakingApparently "retro physical media + monsters" is an entire sub-genre of pokelikes, with Cassette Beasts, Floppy Knights, and Disc Creatures.
Monster Rancher sort of did this when CDs were the norm, too - in the game you generated creatures by having the game read physical music CDs, and the later television adaptation therefore depicted them as being retrieved from stone artifacts that resembled optical-discs. Sadly but understandably, the modern reissues of these games replace the scanning of physical discs with a searchable online music-CD database, instead.

This was one of the earliest iterations of the "summoning beasts from physical media" idea (which always felt like it had its roots in that time when the general public's mindset about computers was that they were almost "magical"), though I don't know if it was the first.

Quoting: shorbergThe Microsoft Monopoly's propaganda machine is stronk.
That, or a lot of folks just think that what came on the machine is all there is, and that spreads like calling all vacuum-cleaners "a hoover" and similar.

Yeah, me either. It's surprising how few outlets seem to realise that PC means "Personal Computer", not "Microsoft Windows".

Limited Run Games now has physical PC versions listed, but they don't specify whether they include the Linux build, unfortunately. Maybe something to reach out about, for those interested in a boxed copy?

Great to know that this is getting native Linux support on day one! I was already curious about the game as it was, and this makes an early purchase much more likely.

Obligatory question: Who's everyone's favourite turtle? Mine's Donatello.

GOG Summer Sale now live with new releases from SEGA

Quoting: GuestI would definitely give it a try. The major point is that dosbox-staging uses SDL2 that is much smarter in that respect. You might have to compile it yourself, though.
Ahh, that might do the trick, then. I've got no issues with compiling stuff myself (it's not difficult even for a non-programmer like me), so it's all good.

EDIT: Looks like it's available as a Flatpak. I'll get that installed shortly!

EDIT 2: It solved the problem - thanks so much for the heads-up on DOSBox Staging!

Quoting: HamishIn my case I built DOSBox Staging and then just dropped it over the DOSBox binaries provided by the GOG.com installers which also works seamlessly.
Ooh, that's handy to know - thanks for that!

GOG Summer Sale now live with new releases from SEGA

Quoting: GuestHehe, who would be a fan of classic 2D platformers and not already own Jazz Jackrabbit
There have to be some folks out there who've missed it! I do have Jazz CD from way back when, but I re-bought it on GOG during a previous sale just to show support for re-releasing the series - and it was an easy and cheap way to get the most recent version of the game (GOG's is 1.3, and I don't remember if my disc is the "Good" or "Bad" version of 1.2).

Quoting: GuestI'm BTW always unwrapping the GOG dosbox games to use my systems dosbox. Not to save disk space, but I use dosbox-staging which is much better in handling fullscreen and non-standard screen resolutions...
I wonder if I'd be better off using that on my GPD Win Max? DOSBox as provided with those GOG releases and lr-dosbox in RetroPie (the only ones I've tried so far) get rotated to the left (which then persists after quitting), because the display on that device is a vertical one that's been mounted sideways. Unless there's some setting somewhere that I can tweak, of course.

Quoting: 1xokAt some point you hear the noise, even when the fan is off.

Wouldn't that lead to the conclusion it was not actually the fan that was causing that noise, but something other such as coil whine?
I think that 1xok means that it's the sort of noise that lingers and causes one's ears to ring. I have a Raspberry Pi fan that does that - you'll "hear" the "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" noise for a while after stepping away from it.
