I ask you, PLG, would you buy a machine dedicated to barely-games like those? It sounds to me to be about as good of an idea as the Barcode Battler.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyOne thing I find interesting about them is that not only are the games he tries bad, and in at least one case represent massive copyright violation, none of them actually seem to be using any of the buzzwordy stuff. The most any of them seem to do is sell a few "NFTs" that are just . . . pictures, that aren't even in-game items, and probably aren't even NFTs in any real sense because it seems like they're selling the same picture to everyone. Probably AI-generated pictures too.Yep! And just think, those are what this hypothetical machine is being pitched for the playing of.
So they're scammy, but not because they're actually even using the scammy technologies to scam anyone--rather, they're just using the buzzwords to try to persuade gullible cryptobros to buy nearly nonexistent games.
I suppose this doesn't really prove that those technologies couldn't be used in games; rather, it suggests that actually taking the trouble to write a game is not nearly a quick enough way to get rich for the tastes of the kind of get-rich-quick scammers who are involved with NFTs etc.

Quoting: PhiladelphusOK, that part about the game that tried to steal and repackage a free open-source game but did it so incompetently that the original game creators were able to push an update that made the rip-off unplayable was hilarious. It cracked me up, I must admit. Props to the real dev - it was a genius move!

I can't help but love them all, though - they really are a wholesome and adorable bunch.

Quoting: Doktor-MandrakeWho's your favourite in the R games? Has to be blue bomber for me, I find him so relatableI don't even have to think about that one! It's the original Bomberman himself, White - he's always determined to do what's right, and his occasional uptight outbursts when nobody else seems willing to step up are a hilarious counterpoint to that (and remind me very much of me doing tech-support for relatives, at times ).

Quoting: Doktor-MandrakeNot picked up R2 yet as it didn't look different enough from R1 to make it worthwhile..R 2 is actually quite different to R 1, as far as the single-player content goes! The gameplay is somewhat based on the long-forgotten Bomber King spin-offs (1, 2 ), so it's more about exploration and gathering items in large spaces where the individual screens are mostly much bigger than the stages in R 1. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I really enjoyed it - blasting through the exploratory areas has this good "virtual bubble-wrap" flow to it, I found.
Quoting: Doktor-MandrakeI still don't think I like the R series as much as bomberman live which is my personal favI love the Super Bomberman R titles since they're a direct continuation of the five Super Bomberman titles for the SNES (though we only got three of those in the UK back in the day; The US only got the first two). My first Bomberman game was Wario Blast Featuring Bomberman!, though - that one went everywhere with me, just as my Game Boy did!

Quoting: PoliticsOfStarvingAnd yes, my confusion in the 90s I found out all about the censorship issue.Urgh, that's my least-favourite way of handling unlockable characters...
There was an unlock Probotector character in Contra 4. But you had to first complete the game, and then they weren’t available in the normal game mode anyway.

Quoting: LoftyThe various Bomberman games are some of my favorite retro games. If your ever feeling you need some simple gaming comfort food it usually does the trick. It's my favourite series, though I think everyone on GOL knows that at this point, haha. Last year's Super Bomberman R 2 was my most-anticipated game in many years, and I loved every minute of it.

Reason being, Contra became Probotector (and sometimes Gryzor) in PAL territories because of strict media censorship in Germany, and it's not often that something resulting from that gets considered superior. (I followed the import scene a lot as a youngster, so I always knew about the existence of both "branches".)

Quoting: PoliticsOfStarvingJust a long rant about my personal experience with Contra.I find this really interesting, thanks for posting it.
I grew up playing a little Mega Drive game called Probotector.
I even had two different sega magazines (a UK and an AU one) with walkthroughs of the game that I’d read and look at the screenshots just because I thought the game was so cool. Especially with Robotech being aired here at the time and similarities with the ride armour and the robots.
(In 2024 I still wear a tank top with the red and blue robots from the game posing on it, and have similar artwork on card stock)
In the late 90s when I got into emulation, I found out that game was known as Contra Hard Corps in the United States, featuring generic Rambo Commando ripoffs. Any further Probotector was a dumb pipe dream.
I know Contra is the same game, but it removes the cool factor. I can go back and emulate Super Probotector on snes, Probotector II on nes, etc.
But whenever something like this comes along now it just breaks my heart how cool it could have been.

Did someone say Bomberman? I'm there!
Love the music in the trailer, too - it reminds me very much of tunes from Jazz Jackrabbit and similar.

Quoting: Vortex_AcheronticOr it will be just another Ouya story. Things will go silent and then plans will be discontinued 😅That one duped enough people, and enough wasn't delivered, that I gather that the correct term for that one is a sham.
