But really, that's one reason I use GamingOnLinux, to see all the stuff happening and coming up and out.

Garry Newman of Rust and Garry's Mod regrets supporting Linux

Electric Prism, self important billionaire, regrets not withholding monies from Garry Newman, developer of Rust and Garry's Mod.

By all means boycott bad products and shoddily constructed games suchas Rust and Gary's Mod Linux version/

Ars slams SteamOS over issues with a single machine and a 4K monitor
29 January 2016 at 1:48 am UTC

I can barely run most games at 4k on my GTX 970, and the framerate isn't steady or high enough to play.

Steam Big Picture doesn't scale properly most of the time with 4k anyways so it's obvious to me that their target is 1080p due to current GPU/CPU and other hardware limitations.

Not only this, but we know that "most" games on SteamOS/Linux take a performance hit because the quality of the port generally is a grade B or grade C which is usually "good enough" but not "stupendous" with the exception of Unreal Engine 4, Ark and several other Valve games (CS:S I get about 260-300 FPS).

Not only this, but nVidia has barely been technically able to output 4k on Linux in my experience. Only during the 358.XX release has my HDMI-1 to my 43" TV outputted 4k sort-of properly, which it still has issues detecting my display on HDMI-1 so I have to bind a xrandr set_resolution.sh to hotkey Super + 9 in gnome just to bring the thing out of Sleep via setting the resolution.

I finally decided to create a dedicated 1080p Steam User on my Arch that only runs in Big Picture and the FPS and experience is much better.

4k really isn't that necessary in gaming, and only becomes relevant on displays 40"+ in my opinion as that's closet to a 96 PPI density which doesn't require UI or App Scaling to solve the smallness eye-strain issues.

Anways, 4k in gaming? Maybe someday, but not today.

Homefront: The Revolution gamespot video looks good, but it will feature microtransactions

Quoting: TheBoss
Quoting: drjomsNot pay to win they say. So if it's true, seems like very good game.
I have seen games with micro transactions which were all right.

In some games it is done fine, CS:GO has a good balance for example.

Dota 2 and TF2 have a nice balance, not the best examples since they are free, but they still do it nicely.

This comment monkey-wrenched my brain since CS:GO and Dota 2 + TF2 were separated as if to contrast.

So Pay to Win = Buy Item to Pwn Noobs
Micro Transaction = Customize Character, Items, etc...

I don't know about TF2 or CS:GO, but in Dota2 the buying/selling of items, skins, etc... for Steam Wallet Money seems like it enhances the game as no items really effect the player's stats.

Then there's League of Legends where you can pay for runes to get a 10-15% advantage over competitors and noobs. Also pay real money to unlock heros that are new and overpowered. Yeah...

Mighty No. 9 delayed again due to networking problems

Sometimes I don't get devs, why not disable incomplete features and slide into Early Access buying time to complete those features?

Sometimes the Unix Philosophy of getting a working product even if primitive right away is better than vaporware.

Rocket League not due on SteamOS & Linux for another 6 to 8 weeks

Still want to play, hopefully its worth the wait it when it comes.

Steam is like 1,000% easier than pirating and its nice knowing that your money is going directly to the creators and not some 3rd party with their hand in the candy bowl renting shelf space in some brick and mortar store and taking a big cut.

Also, have fun reinstalling each game every time you change to a new distro and having 50 bugs per game and a huge mess.

Escape from Tarkov, the new Russian Survival MMO FPS looks like it's heading to Linux
25 January 2016 at 8:56 pm UTC

Quoting: burnallIt seems like that Russian's are more interested into Linux, perhaps due to NSA spying issues with Windows in last years? As for the game, It's kind of a COD in Russian way to me.

From a purely hardware perspective consider that they see AMD and Intel / IBM x86 as "western processors" which makes ARM more desirable to them.

Also, the whole UEFI and CPU blobs no doubt cause some concern, consumers have legitimate reasons to mistrust the US after NSA.

Guess who is the king of ARM? Linux ;P

Also, Russia is a big place, not all Russians are good at technology and not all Americans are fat and obnoxious.

This game looks hella fun.

Atari Vault, a 100 classic game collection heading to SteamOS & Linux

I'm not gonna turn on the hype machine but....

For the right price I could be swayed into picking up a collection like this for my Big Picture.

Quoting: aL
Quoting: BdMdesigNOn the Linuxside, why not only .deb and .rpm based Destributions?

This is too broad to even make sense. going further... what is arch? rpm or deb?

This question confuses me. Both .deb and .rpm are both zipped files and vary slightly different.

That's why alien exists to convert RPM to Deb.

Arch is tar.xz and Arch AUR installs both RPM and DEB when someone writes a wrapper around something like XMind.deb - the important part is that Pacman knows which files have been added to the root file tree incase it needs to remove the package.

Actually PPA/Launchpad hell is one major reason I left debian based distros, PPAs destabilized my system nearly half a dozen times.

I tried so hard to make the move from Gnome 3.18 to Plasma 5 yesterday, so far no go.
