Valve COO on Epic's Tim Sweeney "you mad bro?" when launching the Epic Store

Quoting: WORMThat's what I mean! Selling games that are free from DRM is a compelling feature! And in fact, I have spent money in GoG's store. I haven't bought a single game in EGS.

Agree. I have purchased games on Steam, gifted copies to friends and family on Steam of the same game and bought the same game on GOG simply because it's DRM-free.

I'm not even sure if I really see GOG as a competitor since they are selling a different thing.

I hope to see GOG grow, but as good as Minigalaxy (3rd party app) is, I would really like to see a official storefront someday. I can forgive those flaws for now since they are in a class of 1.

Quoting: WORM[...] Their purchase of Psyonix/Rocket League is still fresh in my mind, where they abruptly ended Linux native builds. There was no need. So much for looking out for the little guy.

Regarding Rocket League, as I recall -- Epic LITERALLY _P_R_O_M_I_S_E_D_ 'Nothing was going to change' when they bought it too.

Insult to injury.

The saying comes to mind "Talk softly and carry a big stick" (that's Gabe Newell) vs "Talk loud and carry a twig" (that's Tim Sweeney)

Quoting: MadWolfimho i do not have a problem with Valve's 30% cut

As a customer, they bend over backwards to appease us, they have had a Linux Client for over a decade, they have an entire Steam Community for social, they have Forums, Fun Sales where you collect points and win stickers and prizes, you are allowed to repair your purchases, I've literally downloaded terabytes of bandwidth from their servers.

As I look around, Entry level servers cost what $5,000 - $20,000? Imagine the sheer cost of having to maintain a fleet of up to date servers, fiber optic back-end, and a fleet of administrators and programmers ready to server the customers.

Valve has earned my respect. Nintendo and other inferior gaming companies have NOT. May my dollars going to Valve and good companies make them super jealous and go out of business like a free market should function.

I'm tired of failure being subsidized and companies serving wallstreet and not customers.

QuoteEpic Games [...] was valued at just $660 million when Tencent purchased a 48% stake in the company in 2012. - Forbes

Sweeney is just a talking head for Tencent aka CCP (China).

He gets into it with Apple.

He gets into it with Valve.

Over what? Money.

Money Money Money.

China is mad Western Stores charge so much.

The best part of Tim Sweeney's confession through Projection & Seething Jealousy and Envy is the contempt he has for customers when he does these dirty deals -- buying Rocket League and stealing the purchases of Valve Gamers.

Dirty Deals with Square Enix to make Kingdom Hearts III, Final Fantasy VII a Epic Games Exclusive.

They literally can't compete so what do they do? [1] Do Underhanded deals [2] Lawfare and Sneaking [3] Shit-talk and Slander their competitors to anyone who will listen.

Just like a politician, they make bold bullshit promises and never deliver diverting your attention and blame because [1] they have contempt for you and [2] they think you're stupid.

I wonder how effective a reverse PR campaign would be.

Could the gaming community crowd fund a NYT Square billboard, or hold signs to create a awareness Nintendo is engaged in lawfare against their fans + The Tech Sector.

I think that drawing BIG attention to what Nintendo has done here would work against their interests and show them to be the crybully that they have become.

We need to make it not worth it for Nintendo to continue their hostile anti-consumer behaviors.

And we need them to know not to mess with the hornets nest.

Quoting: ssj17vegetaI always wondered. What's in it for the end-user ? (Wayland)

I mean, I'm aware it has a much more modern architecture since Xorg codebase dates back to the 90s, but I heard it still had tons of problems with NVIDIA's proprietary GPU driver.

As a gamer myself, I wonder what could be the consequences of such a bold move.
I'm also a little worried about my Nvidia GPU in a world with no X11, but from what I've read newer Linux kernels 6.6.7+ and Nvidia driver 550+ fixes a lot of the Wayland issues. Over the next year or two things should only get better.

Then there is the new open source Nvidia Vulkan driver (that also does openGL) which is shaping up great and AFAIK it should work well with Wayland.

This is totally speculation, but I believe Valve is preparing a general release of SteamOS, one that can run on other handhelds, desktops and living room boxes. In order to do that, they need a working Nvidia driver. I would guess they're more interested in getting the open source driver working well with games than having to deal with Nvidia's proprietary one, which they wouldn't be able to ship with their OS. Given that, Wayland support should be in line with the open source AMD drivers once it's ready.

If what I'm saying turns out to be true, the only question is: when will it be ready?

That's a interesting postulate,

I'm curious why do you think this would be strategically in Valve's interest? How would they stand to benefit? And Are there any observable behaviors or things in the news that align with this hypothesis?

Genuinely curious, no pressure or need to even answer at all, I just found the concept intriguing.

Quoting: Pengling[...]And then the Switch hardware was incredibly poorly-built and I got sick of having to repair carefully-handled in-warranty gear [...]. It was a love/hate thing for years, and I already found there to be an ever-decreasing number of games I wanted to buy even before all of that, so it was inevitable that I'd end up taking my entertainment-money elsewhere eventually.

On the switch hardware note, the first time I held a Switch I noticed how tiny all the buttons and joysticks are. I'm sure it's okay for kids, women, asians, and people with smaller hands -- but it seemed like the joysticks had poor resistance, the material seemed like it would degrade easy, and I could see medium or big hands cramping up on that.

For me the Steam Deck felt lightyears ahead in terms of comfort.

And then when the Steam Deck OLED came along it felt like the reduction in weight made it even more comfortable.

All in all -- I think the perfect Steam Deck could shink 10-15% and stay the same weight and reduce the border, but that would be a optimization, I can't think of any above minor criticism I have against SD.

I hope you didn't have to buy that warranty only to be screwed by it later, this was part of my experience many years ago. I'm so thankful for PC and the ability to play my 1998 StarCraft and other games nearly 30 years later.
