MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries runs great on Linux with Proton now it's on Steam
1 June 2021 at 5:36 am UTC

This goes to my wishlist. I have always wanted to buy some of these games but haven't because that was before Proton existed. I have a massive nostalgia over it's predecessor by 7th Level G-NOME originally for Windows 98.

My only contemplation is whether this one is the one or not. I would like something that's full controller support at least, and I haven't checked out the competition in a while either. Not sure if it improved.

Not sure if joking or not. It has been what other projects call "stable" for years. It's just bad marketing :(
Not at all!
Yes it's "stable," but not really feature-complete yet, and I think that's why they label it as "alpha".

Agree. Serious bug testers who get out a fine tooth comb, analyze & compile a list and compare to similar style games like say Age of Empires II Definitive Edition are not going to come up empty handed.

Granted credit where credit is due, Alpha 24 ended up being a MASSIVE improvement (3 years work).

I do think it's very close to graduating to Beta 1 -- I imagine it's fairly feature complete, but I could understand going from the number #25 to #1 feels a little wrong. Maybe they could just skip and make it Beta #25/#26 I dunno.

Valve looks to be overhauling Steam Library folders to finally make them more useful

Quoting: ElectricPrismHow and where do I open a steam:// URL -- I can't seem to navigate to the area where I can manually enter the location.
Just in your browser, and if your desktop is setup correctly it will open it inside Steam and you get a Console tab along the big main navigation bar.

That makes sense -- I was able to enter the link into LibreWolf and it used a sort of xdg-open to pass it off to steam. Thank You.

Quoting: AkonadyLinux users are willing to pay thousand upon thousand of money on games (closed source) but doesn't want to buy a proper OS and want open source software

Half true. Being a Linux user is a status symbol to me. I buy $600-$1000 GPUs for many years to be able to get good FPS on Linux, then MESA, AMDGPU, DXVK, Proton kick ass and get us into good shape, etc...

Then I donate money to Krita, GIMP, EFF and other foundations meanwhile companies dump millions in donations into Blender, Godot, and so on.

In essence you could say I spend THOUSANDS of dollars to _NOT_ use WINDOWS -- badly made blackbox shit os. And I'd do it all again.

Hell I threw a thousand at Valve just to buy a Index when I'm not a VR person, and I plan do the same thing when their new Hand Hand Game Console or 2021/2022 Steam Console comes out with over 7K native games or 44K games including ROMS, Proton, etc...

We use Linux because it's __BETTER__

So what did everyone buy this sale? Not sure I need much I have a backlog of like ~500 Steam Games I'd like to play.

Oh and I also have donated and thrown money at FOSS games in dev like 0AD because it's nice to have someone buy you a pizza once in a while and makes those games even more kickass for @all

GamingOnLinux moves on from Freenode to Libera.Chat for IRC

Quoting: KithopThankfully, IRC (and Matrix and Mastodon listed in the article) are open enough that you can just cut ties and say 'screw it, we're doing our own!', like the Libera.Chat team is doing.

Any mention of them on Freenode gets you booted, and yeah:
It's happening (Matrix)
to lots
of people

Also, for anyone using the 'main' matrix.org homeserver, they're working on proper IRC bridging:
Bridge libera.chat #1324

After reading those and the comments in this thread I'm so done with private networks. You get 10 years into something, and then all of a sudden something changes and the next thing you know you have people breathing down your neck with unreasonable requirements.

To me Federated seems like the only sane way forward. I hope this leads to the rise in Matrix, Mastodon, PixelFed and other Federated networks like Email.

Looks like Steam is getting a brand new Downloads page
27 May 2021 at 12:31 am UTC

I've literally been using Big Picture to access the Downloads and manually que the updates for over 500 games. It's my biggest annoyance since the new UX update.

I can't welcome a "All Downloads" page fast enough. Godspeed Mr Gaben.

QuoteWe've seen over 700 projects (including us!) have their Freenode channels be taken over ... [because we] had the sheer audacity to mention Libera.Chat

Owch. I would like to thank Andrew Lee for confirmation that (Ex & Decorated Freenode Staff) Libera.Chat criticisms must be valid. I remained partially skeptical up until this moment.

What a mess, may Freenode.net be buried quickly so the legacy behind the name is not further tarnished by this skidmark known as Andrew Lee.

Reverse engineered PlayStation classic Driver 2 reimplementation has a Beta out now

I know other projects sometimes will build themselves on a demo.exe that is stored at https://archive.org since any demos released were legit distributed by the authors, -- "no backsies".

I really wasn't expecting to see this game in my feed, but like Turok 1 & 2, and other games from that era I am pleasantly surprised.

Top comment "sweet memories" indeed.

Edit: I know it may seem silly but I could also see a group starting a "License Library" where CDs/DVDs each have a unique drive and are connected to a computer. A person can then "borrow" the game by simply connecting to the server (WAN or VLAN), eg: `sshfs` mount the game and play -- a reasonable limitation would be only 1 person per copy at a time so the "borrowed" copy can be given out and taken back as needed so to speak. I see no difference between that and lending your game to a friend person to person, and considering there would have been no foresight into the future it's not like any licenses or agreements could have predicted such future capabilities so I don't anticipate any breech on 80% of the larger scope of content.

I'm with Liam on the title being accurate & factual.

It's up to the reader to not make inferences based on limited information (We all do it sometimes). This is a good example of why Critical Thinking is so important & reeling in those "leaps of faith" to "fill in the gaps" of what we do and do not know.
