Steam Link hardware officially walks the plank, there's an app for that

Sad but good to know... I tested and performances wasn't really good. 100% wired and had lots of stuttering. At the pace things are going, at least we may still hope that Mesa will eventually catch up.

Unfortunately, hardware encoding is not yet supported with Mesa drivers :/

So it's running software-only, making use of a lot of CPU.

Might give it another shot soon. I have a new RX 580 to test streaming with. Anyone know if the Mesa drivers are doing a good streaming job?
Edit: Did you say 4K? Is the Steam link 4K capable?

Quoting: slaapliedjeQuoting: MohandevirThing is, when it was heavily discounted, it was cheaper to buy a Steam Link for the network and HDMI cable included than buying the cables alone. So I bought 2 of them. :)
Tried using them hardwired and it did a good job with many games but for others (ex: Witcher 3) I had lots of pixelated frames or just bad performances (Deux Ex: Mankind Divided). Since that's the kind of games I play, the Steam Link doesn't really make it for me. Too bad, I really like the concept and tought that it might become a good client for an hypothetical "Steam streaming service".
So I mostly had played Divine Divinity: Original Sin on Linux on a 1080p TV with the Link, and it'd have audio delay and was crashing (well to be fair, that was the game). But once I changed it from 5.1 surround to just stereo it worked perfectly. Well, was still crashing, but there wasn't any issues with the game. I've also now been playing Conan Exiles over it on my 4k tv, works fine. I've even played Fallout 4 with it. Mind you, now I'm using Wireless with Conan and it's working.

Total War: WARHAMMER II released for Linux, port from Feral Interactive

That's why I put "LOL!" at the end. I totally know it's not that easy, else Linux market share would already be much higher. I just exploited a "cliché".
Sarcasm we call that?

Quoting: einherjarI would prefer running it with proton and Cross Plattform.
A port or natural game is better, but not if cross plattform is missing.
For me, that's a big issue.
Not Ferals fault, maybe and sad for Feral themselves off course.
I hope they get more partnerships with game devs. Actually they are really dependend on the TW and TR series :-(
Quoting: MohandevirQuoting: raverrebelEven if I would've wanted the game, the missing crossplay would hinder me from playing with friends.. Really hope that crossplay will be implemented for future ports (I know it's hard and sometimes impossible).
Just tell them that it's a good reason to try Linux! It's free! Lol!
No! It is not free. It costs them time. And if you have friends that do not care for IT and just want to play, they just won't switch to Win. And the argument: "Multiplayer-Games on Linux can often not be played with friends on Windows. So please install Linux!" is really weak, isn't it?
It is like: "Try a new OS, it gives you problems when you want to play with others on Win. But no matter, you can Dualboot and maintain two systems in your rare spare time...."

I'm just wondering what is the "milestone" Valve is striving for to consider Proton ready for Prime-time?
Valve adds the new Steam Chat into Big Picture Mode

I was just referring to this:
https://www.pcgamesn.com/steam-ui-overhaul-game-keys-g2a
We still have no clue what it's going to look alike. The only thing that got updated until now, correct me if I'm wrong, is the chat window.
It's probably more a sign of what, like it or not, Steam will look alike?

Quoting: jardonQuoting: MohandevirQuoting: jardonYa it looks absolutely horrendous and screams laziness. I hope they just did that so that its usable until the next big picture update. It will make me really sad if this is indicative of Valve bailing on BPM
Without bailing out on BPM... Couldn't it be possible, with good screen scaling, to have a controller friendly UI that looks a lot more like the classic desktop client. In fact, couldn't be the same UI on both?
In this case, absolutely not. Anyone who has any experience with UI/UX or even has any kind of an eye for aesthetics will tell you that the current chat implementation does not maintain any uniformity or fluidity. I really hope that this is temporary and isn't a sign that theyve given up on improving BPM

Unreal Engine 4.21 is out, now defaults to the Vulkan API on Linux

From the official announcement:
"With the help of Samsung, Unreal Engine 4.21 includes all of the Vulkan engineering and optimization work that was done to help ship Fortnite on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and is 100% feature compatible with OpenGL ES 3.1. Projects that utilize Vulkan can run up to 20% faster than the same project that uses OpenGL ES."
So Fortnite IS using Vulkan, on Android... Mmmm... Interresting.

Could be a good way to make Linux support even better... Yep! One can dream!
How is doing the Linux build of Unreal Tournament? Didn't hear about it for quite a while...
They've long given up on UT4 since Fortnite became so big, last update was in june 2017
