Valve overhauled Steam Deck 'As Mouse' Gyro option in new Beta

Gyro with Stick is pretty confusing. I always tend to do both and it ends up doing nothing good. Gyro with trackpad is much better, because I don't have the reflexe to move my finger on the trackpad, while using the gyro. In that case, it's only Gyro and it works great.

This said, using the Gyro on the Steam Deck means that you are moving the screen... Sometimes it gets at weird viewing angles... It's much better suited for a standard controller, like the Steam Controller, imo.

Steam Deck a 'stable target for a couple years' so no Steam Deck 2 for a while

Quotewe're not really seeing growth stop after COVID, so for us it's really important to keep working on the current version of the Steam Deck, put together software updates we just released a big SteamOS 3.5 update that's added new features we're going to keep doing that...

Are they talking about Steam as a whole or the Steam Deck sales figures? The first is great, but the latter would be awesome news.

Unity apologises for the new runtime fee, say they will make changes

Hahaha! What's the next step? The managment will be sent away on a golden parachute and Unity will be sold to a new group to start on a "clean slate"? The whole thing smells of a quick buck and sabotage looking for an exit door, from the upper management.

Quoting: slaapliedjeThese days we have powerful NUC-likes that are small enough to stick under a TV.

Yep! But Valve can sell them much cheaper and support one set of hardware with SteamOS, instead of as many hardware config as there are mini NUC systems. I don't think Valve wants to support all the PC configurations available anymore.

This said, PS5 are Oberron (7nm) and Oberron+ (6nm) Van Gogh apus. A Deckard console with that kind of spec at a similar price would be an unbelievable value offering, imo... Where is my wallet?

Edit: And there is more to it than just a console. From the leaks, Valve would custom taylor this console to enhance the VR headset support with wireless support (VR Link). Some infos seem to point to something similar to a Snapdragon XR2 Chipset that could analyze and relay motion informations to the main cpu (similar to the overpriced Apple VR headset). Sorry paraphrasing SadlyItsBradley.

Quoting: LoftyIve seen a lot of new Windows handhelds recently with better specs, but they always fail in certain ways that the steam deck does not.

worse value
worse ergonomics
worse audio
worse controls
worse software
worse drivers
worse configuration
worse updates
worse battery life
worse Windows

Competition is good, but so far i haven't seen a decent enough handheld that can compete. Not even the ROG ALLY is close even though it does beat the steam deck on screen, performance the rest is not as good.

So id say ignore the Youtube click bait about that latest super duper windows 10" Ryzen Z1 handheld that cost $1000 and just get a steam deck.

Usually better when docked. If you want to use a handheld as a handheld (what a weird idea), stick to the Steam Deck, else you'll get worse battery for similar performances. All of that 400$+ more expensive.

Linux updates tease Valve 'Galileo' and 'Sephiroth' - Steam Deck refresh? Or new VR?

Quoting: BrokattWhat I would want is a version of the Steam Deck without the screen, a Steam Brick if you will. I think that could be really popular both for desk and couch gaming. Sure you can get a dock a get almost the same experience but not entirely.
Make one yourself. There are quite a few dinky NUC-like machines available, or you can just plug any computer into a TV or monitor. Install Linux on it, autolaunch Steam Big Picture, and pair it with a PlayStation controller. Job jobbed.

I could and I have done so in the past but I don't want to anymore. I work in IT and when I get home I just want stuff to work with minimal setup, with support from a stable company/organization so everything doesn't break after 6 months. That's why I love SteamOS with EmuDeck. That to me is an acceptable level of setup :)

I feel like setting up a Windows PC and installing Steam on it is not that much work. Especially Steam has long since had the ability to launch on startup of the PC into Big Picture Mode (which now has a Deck-like interface). I know this is a Linux-focused website but if your main issue is compatibility/stability, that's your best bet.

I get the point, though. Holoiso and ChimeraOS are great, but they often have to catch up with new bugs. This is what happens when you try to support all the pc configurations available. If Valve was selling an official Steam Machine with a fixed hardware, it would be easier for them to support, maintain a bug free experience and all that with an agressive pricing. I've said it before and the Steam Deck is a good example of that: Linux shines in the dedicated hardware market.

Edit: Just imagine a Steam Machine priced like a Rog Ally or Lenovo Legion Go, but much more powerfull... Mhmmm... Could be a jab at these "power cord required handhelds". It would add the option to play AAA games via In-home Streaming, when possible, with a 6hrs+ battery autonomy, even on the 400$ Steam Deck with better performances than these other handhelds. I like that too.
