Windows drivers roll out for Steam Deck but Valve won't support it

Even if I wanted, I wouldn't be able to install Windows. There is so much useless stuff that MS is force feeding us, on that OS... Made by Microsoft, for Microsoft.

"All you have to do is edit the registry here, disable that, edit that thing, return in the registry, download and install drivers". And all the while reboot, reboot, reboot!

I have to put 30-45 mins just to hack and configure through the OS to make it run like I want and I didn't include the initial update process... "I'm to old for that sh&t!"

"When it comes to Linux, 10 mins, fully updated and Steam is fired...

And they say Linux is a rabbit hole...

That's when I realized that Windows wasn't for me anymore.

Quoting: dindonValve is providing an official way to install Windows as well as put SteamOS back. The dual-boot wizard seems to also be in the work. Hopefully Windows users will also get the new SteamOS interface on Windows as a Big Picture mode replacement. That's plenty of support.

any steam client can run the new interface its just a matter of tweak a few config files, people already figured out how.

Yeah, I tried it. It's not yet ready to be a replacement to the actual BPM, imo. It's windowed only and the resolution at 1080p is meh (720p stretched)... It also felt sluggish. It's still a beta for good reasons. I will wait for an official BPM update. This said, the Deck UI is pretty nice.

I hope they stick with that and don't cave to any pressure. Keep devel and support focused on SteamOS and FOSS so we all benefit in the long run.

I hope Microsoft doesn't a$k Valve to reconsider

Quoting: spacemonkeyI am curious about the performance difference. But no matter the results, I will never ever install Windows.

If they think the autonomy is an issue with SteamOS, considering AMD FSR baked in and tweaks at kernel level to optimize it, they are in for a major let down, imo. They will get the worst of both world, on that aspect.

Quoting: MayeulCI don't want to be that person, and I'm very excited about the Steam Deck, but it's probably going to bomb in the mainstream media (remember steam machines? not that bad, but I expect the same kind of comments), so I wonder if we'll ever see these "testing" branches materialize.

Once more games are verified, the Deck will stand a second chance.

I'm keeping my expectations low on purpose. I only ask to be mistaken :P

This time the hype is real. The vast majoity of reviewers are already onboard. Compared to this, the steam machines never generated much hype. Reviewers were unconvinced at best... They were unsure who it was targeted at and the price point... Through the roof!

This time, I'm quite sure the hardware will succeed. It offers the right price point and the quality to create an opening. What is unsure is how many of them will just wipe SteamOS in favor of Windows.
