System76 patches APT for Pop!_OS to prevent users breaking their systems

Quoting: GuestAlso, who actually ignores warning messages and proceeds regardless?

People wanting to prove a point. The less cynical answer: "Windows people that are conditioned to ignore things like UAC and just click next->next->next regardless".

Must take into account that warning messages in Windows usually means next to nothing, even, in some cases, for the tech savies. Thus, the Next->Next->Next and then look at the damages. Then do a search with the error message and the resulting behavior and you might find a solution that has absolutely no link to the said original message...

Bad timing indeed, sadly what a missed opportunity for Pop!_OS (God!...this name!) to show its value. (as a side note, I felt so vindicated when Linus agreed that it has a "spectacularly stupid name").
Nevertheless, I hope is gonna try it again, from the looks of it (from what I gather watching their WAN's) Linus already probably butchered his Manjaro install because he didn't liked Dolphin or something.
I think it deserves a second chance.

Seriously, from my experience, Pop_OS! is probably the easiest distro for managing Steam, Lutris and all gaming related stuff. It's all one click installs. It does deserves a second chance. It is a missed opportunity that shouldn't have happened, caused by an error that probably happens once per decade (might be exagerating here). I'm not blaming anyone, other than the timing. Nobody is perfect.

Edit: We have never seen Steve Ballmer or Bill Gates battling with Windows crashes during Microsoft keynotes either...

Edit 2: It's all that double standard stuff that irritates me, in cases like this.

It's just sad... Bad timing. The problem is solved, I read? Took what? Couple of hours to get a fix? How much time would have been required, on Windows, to get a fix for a similar issue? Next tuesday patch? Next month? I must admit that I never witnessed a Windows update bricking a PC or generate a BSOD, either...

But it's Linux, it doesn't have that margin. It must be nothing less than perfect, accross the board, on all distributions simultaneously, to convince mainstream users.

HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed details Steam Deck support, shows a quick video

What I really like is the fact that there will be graphical presets for the Steam Deck (max performances and battery saving). It's not just a: "It works with Proton". There will be some optimization done. Neat!

Quoting: GuestGreat irony is that the "special" in many devices is a fairly standardised battery anyway that can easily be replaced if you can pry the device open.

So true... Found a hack for my Nvidia Shield controller where the guy swapped the original batteries with rechargeable Duracell. He soldered the metal strip on them and added some electrical tape to wrap them together. He pretends the charge lasts longer than the brand new original ones.

Quoting: zen_xenoI'm glad its been indicated that the power pack in the Deck should be replaceable, with a little effort.

I'm pretty fine with that.

Personnally, being forced to change the batteries, in my SC is the part I hate the most. I broke one of the "ejector sticks" in one of them... I can still change the batteries, but I'm in for a hell of a fight.

Best case scenario: Standard rechargeable batteries that may be recharged with a USB cable, similar to some battery holders for the Xbox 360 controllers.

Edit: This said, I'm not sure you could get 8hours of playtime, on the Steam Deck, with 2 AA batteries... It would require a couple more and add some weight to the device. Don't you think?

One doesn't prevent the other.

It's all just killing DIY. Better to look for a laptop or, in some cases, prebuilt PCs. That's another reason why I really hope that Valve will come up with an Xbox Series S / Playstation 5 kind of PC. Even more with the "good standing account" requirement for reservation. It's still the best solution to prevent scalpers from snatching away all the stocks. For Valve, it could be an opportunity.

Quoting: MohandevirIt would be nice if the next step in Valve's hardware offering was a dedicated next gen AMD console like PS5 or Xbox Series X (performance and hardware wise). Who knows, if the Steam Deck is a success? Not keeping my hopes too high though.
Steam Machines 2?

Yeah, but built by Valve with the same agressive pricing that fueled the Steam Deck. Not the overpriced and underpowered offering of the original batch. If the Steam Deck is successful (we got indicators that it could be), it would create a context really different to what was in 2015... So, who knows?

Edit: But since the initial failure of the Steam Machines, I wouldn't use that name again. Steam Box maybe?

If you also want the 500gb storage, base price is 720. (EUR) (about 833 US dollars)

I would have serious buyers remorse if I purchased this over a steam deck. With the deck I get true use portability along with docking to become a standalone machine.

Where I work we deploy Lenovo mini towers which admittedly aren't as cool as this because they aren't really upgradeable. The thing is these small form factor machines are pretty cool for their size but they fall in a weird middle ground area of cons. The first con being you cant upgrade the power supply and add in a video card so it doesn't make sense for a true gaming machine. On the other end, for the cost -- you could just build a standard tower for much cheaper though isn't portable... Also with the standard build tower you can get a entry level to decent spec power supply and video card set up for less cost. My most recent build was around 670 US dollars.

If you need portability you most likely don't need it to be a gaming system. So there are many cheaper options out there to accomplish this.

That doesn't mean this doesn't have pros -- for myself I don't see a need for this use case. It is great to see Tuxedo coming out with this though. Ill look forward to checking out some reviews on it either way. You never know!
