The Web site still says it's "coming soon"... Is this the alpha or the beta, to which you're referring?

Quoting: liamdaweIt's a major issue affecting a lot of people. Not everyone will see the email, and we would rather be safe than sorry, and it's a good reminder for people.

There might be delays in the e-mails or something - I'm seeing the same story pop-up on a lot of other sites too now...

How Steam Computes Linux Sales
24 March 2015 at 11:29 am UTC

Quoting: GNUzelSo if I buy a game like Shadow of Mordor on Steam on sale, it counts as Linux since I didn't play it and bought it on Linux steam client?

As long as you don't install or play it under a Microsoft Windows or Apple Mac OS-based operating system in the first two week, yes... At least according to this article and its sources.

Quoting: SkullyNot sure why you think we should change our passwords, nothing in that message says anything about other people being compromised, just you. And I haven't received such a mail.

Quoting: EikeStill not sure if it's about all accounts or only the ones they've sent mails to...

I never received an e-mail either, and the blog entry above appears to indicate that only certain people have been affected:
Quoting: TwitchWe will communicate directly with affected users with additional details.

But still, I'd rather be safe than sorry...

Quoting: SkullyNot even sure why it's an article on here.

Again, it's always better to be safe than sorry...

As a gentle reminder people, whether you're affected or not, this is why it's a good idea to always use unique passwords (i.e. different passwords for every site or service); strong passwords (completely random, mixed case; letters, numbers and where permitted, symbols); and where supported, two-factor/two step authentication.

If you don't want to remember so many passwords (who does?), use a password manager like Keepass and if you want to be extra careful, never share your Keepass file "over-the-air" (i.e. via Internet, online storage solutions, e-mail, etc)... Only share your Keepass file by manually copying it to your mobile devices and other computers (e.g. via a "thumb" drive).

Edit: This might be wider than implied - I just logged-in and was forced to reset my password anyway... Even though I still never received an e-mail about this.

Try logging-out and logging back in, if you do not see this message.

Plague Inc: Evolved Now In Beta For Linux
23 March 2015 at 8:06 am UTC

I've had this on my "wish" list since the moment it was announced and I've been impatiently awaiting its release for Linux-based operating systems... The moment it is available for Linux-based operating systems, is the moment I'll have it.

If the games that have actually been announced for Linux-based operating systems, Plague Inc: Evolved sits pretty high on my list...

Of course, add in my "wish for a Linux release" list and well, it goes to the bottom of the list - but that's another story. ;-)

Why Are We Still Dual Booting?

Quoting: CybaCowboyAlthough initially against the change, the wife doesn't mind Ubuntu these days, though misses Windows-based operating systems when it comes to things like updating/upgrading our Sony Xperia smartphones (like most Android manufacturers, Sony only allow updates/upgrades to be applied using a Windows-based computer) and my daighter's LeapPad products...

What kinds of updates? I have a Sony Xperia Z2 but haven't ever had any need for Windows (or a computer at all) to update anything on it.

Handset/system upgrades (e.g. from "Ice Cream Sandwich" to "Lollipop" ), not application or game updates.

Sony only distribute them via a computer, not wirelessly ("over-the-air" )... Well, at least with respect to their "flagship" handsets (currently the "Z" series; formerly the "S", "Xperia Arc" and "X10" series).

Why Are We Still Dual Booting?
15 March 2015 at 1:03 am UTC Likes: 1

I dual-booted Ubuntu pretty much since the beginning (of Ubuntu) and dabbled with single-boot Linux-based operating systems prior to this, whilst the family used Microsoft Windows-based operating systems exclusively... Mid-last year though, we changed all of our machines to single-boot Ubuntu and have never looked back.

My reasoning?

Linux-based operating systems almost always perform better, they're notoriously more secure and day-to-day maintenance (defragmentation, disk-scanning, updates and upgrades, virus prevention and eradication, etc...) is almost entirely automatic - seeing as I'm the "geek" in the house, that would normally mean that I'd run from computer-to-computer doing everything once a month... With Linux-based operating systems, most of this work is automated and/or simplified.

My son isn't a big fan of it - "all of the good games are on Windows-based operating systems!" - but that's why he has a Sony PlayStation 4 of his very own, alongside a Sony PlayStation Vita... And SteamOS will change everything.

Although initially against the change, the wife doesn't mind Ubuntu these days, though misses Windows-based operating systems when it comes to things like updating/upgrading our Sony Xperia smartphones (like most Android manufacturers, Sony only allow updates/upgrades to be applied using a Windows-based computer) and my daighter's LeapPad products...

But for that, we're going to buy an ultra-cheap laptop running a Windows-based operating system - most likely the Kogan Atlas X1510 - and use it for the few times we simply can't get around not having a Windows-based operating system.

A new age is upon us, and the penguin will rise...

Quoting: NickNuclearIt is beginning!

Just bought Saints Row IV GOTC for $8.

But... It's not available for Linux-based operating systems yet!

You realize your money doesn't go to the Linux developer/porter if you buy the Microsoft Windows version, right?

Age Of Wonders III Officially Nearing Beta For Linux
14 February 2015 at 11:52 am UTC

Quoting: SkarjakWhat an odd habit. Especially given that many series will try to shake up the formula as they age, why would you have to buy the originals? It's not like you're missing out on the story...

Usually you are missing out on the story and even if you're not (e.g. with the upcoming "Bioshock: Infinite" release, which is almost completely unrelated to the other "Bioshock" games as I understand it), it's just not "right" to buy the sequels without buying the originals...

Yes it's bizarre - my wife would be the first to agree with you there - but it's just the way I am with games (and films, and books/eBooks, and...), and buying the sequels without buying the originals (even with regards to major titles that will "further the cause" ) drives me batty!

I guess we all have our strange quirks, this is mine.

lol

Quoting: FutureSutureAlso, how did you manage to miss that the previous games are not on Linux?

Like I said, I've never heard of the series...

Quoting: FutureSutureChances are the previous games will never come to Linux.

Only in exceptional circumstances (e.g. a game from a particularly-big developer or a game that I think would otherwise "further the cause for gaming on systems running Linux-based operating systems" ) do I purchase games without purchasing the originals...

I might make an exception for this game though, it truly is tempting, because I run the "Heroes" series via WINE at the moment and this game looks more polished.

Quoting: TeqYou've got Civ V, even though the previous games aren't available. This isn't any different in my opinion.

I was going to tell you that you were wrong, because I don't recall buying it... But I just checked both my records (I retain digital copies of all my receipts) and my Steam library, sure enough, there it is!

Interestingly, when I go to the Steam store page, it says I own the game, but then has the option to buy the "complete" edition further down... Yet my Steam receipt indicates that I bought the "complete" edition!

My receipt says I got it at a good price though, so I must've picked this up during some sale...
