We are testing out a new open source social network for our news called 'Mastodon'
24 November 2016 at 2:13 am UTC

I'm using Diaspora* for a couple of years now. I think it's the most advanced decentralized social network. And also they're developing an agnostic API so that Diaspora* is just one server/client application of the whole network. There are also Friendica and Redmatrix (and maybe others) that can connect to the network as well, as you can see here: the-federation.info.

I don't know if Mastodon is part of the federation though... If it is then yeay! else there's a strong possibility that the project won't gather enough users to be interesting.

You can ask Fla ([email protected]) on Diaspora* about the possibilities to cross-post with a PHP plugin. I'm pretty sure it exists, I'm following a few accounts that I don't think they're entering the post manually.

Edit: actually GoL is one of the few sites that makes me stay on G+, but I'd really like to ditch G+ at some point.

I'm registered on this pod: framasphere.org, it's maintained by Framasoft, a french association that promotes free software and encourages to leave the GAFAM.

In D*, I like the fact that you can write your posts in Markdown, it gives you a lot of freedom in how you present your content. You can put an image right at the top, or in the middle of your post for instance.

Stop GOG "advertising" until GOG Galaxy arrives to Linux!

Yes, it's not optimal, but you can still play Linux games from GOG even without Galaxy, so I see no point in the hatred.

I share the same point of view as @elbuglione. I don't like that GOG is advertising "and Linux soon" for their GOG Galaxy client for more than a year now!!! It's totally unacceptable. "Soon" means "in the next weeks or months", and not "in the next years or decades".

As long as there won't be the Linux client, they simply won't have my money.

Transport Fever released with day-1 Linux support, some thoughts
8 November 2016 at 11:41 am UTC

First time I see a video of this game, I wasn't very interested before. But in fact this is excellent! Back in the days, I loved Transport Tycoon and this game seems to be a gorgeous, modernized version of it. I was looking a lot at OpenTTD, but as for the original game, I always found the train management to be very painful (especially the railways signals.

Quoting: liamdaweI thought I would need something to allow the train to turn around, but it magically switched directions when it got to the station. This was a massive let down for such an in-depth simulation game to completely disregard the need for direction when it comes to trains. I mean, that’s the whole point of the game isn’t it?
I see a lot of parallels between Transport Fever and Transport Tycoon, and this behavior is actually the same as in TT. Not that it is good, but at least it's the same ;)

Anyway, this game definitely get into my wishlist!

I got sick of stuttering, so I've been playing on ps4, but I hate joystick aiming, so TVHM is a slog.

I think stuttering are more due to shader compilation. Once the shader cache feature will be in mesa, we will have way less freezes and stuttering.

Black Mesa, the very popular fan-made recreation of Half-Life is now on Linux in beta

Made my day mate... this is so, so true!

What's the official position of Valve on this fan-made remix?

I really want to try this game, but the "fan-made" side and the "not until it's finished" estimation don't inspire me a lot.

Looks like Mesa has hit OpenGL 4.5 for the open source Nvidia 'nvc0' driver
20 October 2016 at 2:24 pm UTC

Quoting: STiATI'm very happy about that, since long-term I'd like to go for the nvc0 driver for most of my computers (except for the one running SteamOS, I still don't trust the driver for games).
If your goal is to go open source, I'd strongly advise you to buy an AMD card for several reasons:

1. AMD are more open source-friendly than NVIDIA
2. So AMD has a nice advance in how the open source communities work (it can take ages to push a patch to the Linux kernel if you're doing it wrong)
3. I've been using the r600 drivers for quite some time and was able to play most of the games (like Cities: Skyline, but not Alien: Isolation)
4. I've bought an RX 480 and now I can play Alien: Isolation ;)
5. Since AMD is more open-source friendly, we'll see much more improvements and optimizations on their open source drivers
6. RADV (which also proves point 5. ;))

Civilization VI for Linux is no longer certain, only a possibility

Yet again, the lack of transparency brings ludicrous conspiracy theories... Maybe one day the companies will understand that they don't have to hide everything.

In the meantime, I would not blame Aspyr if the port doesn't happen. Maybe Firaxis devs decided to use proprietary techs that aren't available on Linux and they're investigating on a possible replacement that doesn't involve rewriting the whole engine.

A look at Planet Nomads now it's in closed alpha and available on Linux

Quoting: wintermuteDid you start with the -force-opengl option as described in the article? A lot of Unity 5.x based games have not worked without that on my AMD laptop.

Yup, actually it works "better" without the option ;)
