Valve has always been very vocal about that they want to let others integrate steam link into their hardware. "It was not about the link, it was about the ability to have a relatively open streaming platform."
now that you said that, you reminds me that some tv oems are trying to ship games alongside their tvs, it might be a good idea to make an tv strong enough to run some games and use steamOS or compatible on the tv.
" don't think it matters that much if a ton of people actually run SteamOS as their distro. It's the way it influences distro design, and reassures developers, that is important."
it will not influence the design if no one use it, even game developers will not target it, and steam runtime is proprietary.
are you really saying that the solution for the linux fragmentation is: ship proprietary code?
" Want to target the next gen of Playstation and PS4, along with X-Box, etc.? Next gen consoles with minimal problems? You'll use Vulkan."
xbox one will not support vulkan since MS is trying to push Dx12 and xbox is one of the reasons that directx is still relevant.
" . It all comes down to research if you dont think the market is there for you're game do not promise a port linux gamers have long long memories. "
what is the difference if we do? we arent consumers anyway.
if they then relase their games for linux and we dont buy it as an revenge, it will be like the witcher 2/3 case.
if we do buy even without the linux support, they have no reason to not promisse something they cant fulfil...
" consoles you have at least a generation which will play certain games and after a few years there's a new one. Having flexibility of am usual x86 computer also means doing compromises."
ps4 and xbox one are x86...
" Perhaps to some extent lack of games, but Steam Machines could run many more games than consoles ever can at launch,"
the ammount of games is irrelevant, no one that have an ps3 will sell it or buy another machine to play "atari games" or 8 bit indie shit.
ps4,xbox one and windows can play those anyway, the reason they buy an new machine is to play games that they old machines can't
there are milions of flash games out there, why we arent playing those too?
because we are looking at quality not quantity.

we dont need it, we already use linux so we already count to the linux marketshare.
the money we would spent geting an steam machine to not improve the marketshare at all, could be better spent buying games for linux instead.
steam machines need to sell to the ones who dont use linux not to the ones who already to, in order to be effective to change the things on the market.

" It keeps Microsoft from going full retard with the Windows Store UWP program."
you're missing the point here...
its very unlikely that valve can compete with microsoft, so they only point their fingers as if they were guns, but they never are serious about it, they will not go full retard trying to destroy microsoft, because that could cost too much for then if they fail.
The same can ve said about microsoft, microsoft cant be "full retard' with windows store because that can cost then too much.
i dont think any of then will make an significative move, they dont have an reason to it, the more they try the more the other part try to counter they move, as they are right now, they have nothing to lose.
that is the issue.
SteamOS will not be an overnight sucess? the same can be said about UWP program.
microsoft has some killer features like Hollo lens, compatibility with xbox1 and guarantee that the game will run on the future, they are tring to kill the win32 api, slowly to give time to companys to port to the new apis and not give enough incentive to the users to migrate to other OS (Since most of their programs still works)
Valve on the other hand is planting the seeds they can just in case they need to put more money into it, have an chance to strike on time.
either none of then are serious about it, or they are doing an "boiling frog" strategy.

"We can change nothing with our voices, we can only change things by actually growing in marketshare and making them money. A lot of companies have proven that already."

well, looking at the bright side, at least this prove one thing: our voice makes an impact, its not pointless to shoult, we actualy have the power to change something with our voice.
its a shame that we change it for worse, but if we have this power, we certainly can change it for better with other titles/companys.

read everthing that i said, not just part of it.
yes, nothing is original, everything is a remix, i'm just pointing out this, this is not an flaw of the game, its not like if the game is less good due to not being completely original.

Quoting: Beamboom"but use it to make an game? that is indeed original."Quoting: elmapulits nothing original, its just a point cloud
Well from that perspective nothing is original, is it? It's just a hand drawn animation, or just an object built with polygons, or just a sprite or bitmap, just a raytraced lighting, just a video scan, it's just code...
I've never seen a game with this kind of artwork. Therefore it's original, regardless of method to achieve it. Don't you agree? :)

its nothing original, its just a point cloud generated by the kinect trying to detect stuff.
but use it to make an game? that is indeed original.
