Old World from the Civilization IV designer releases on Steam along with Linux support

I've had a chat with the devs regarding Linux version on GOG. and it comes to no surprise that the issue is due to lack of Galaxy.

Technically speaking it can be made to work without it but that would require a lot of work on the devs' end and most likely not economically viable.

Quoting: SchattenspiegelGoG version works(though ist seems to be an older build by version number) Steam version has issues with fullscreen (again). Otherwise a very enjoyable game.

In typical gog fashion, the Linux installers are either late or missing.

In some cases I contacted the devs and they updated their game.

Quoting: txtsdBase config costs ~USD960 in my country. 1/7 of the price is tax.

Likewise, in euro it translates to about €800 for the base config. Unless you're a diehard coreboot fan I wouldn't recommend it.

Last year I built an ASRock Deskmini X300 for much less and performs better. The whole thing cost me a little over €500.

Quoting: Liam DaweNote: only Steam will have the Linux version.

Is this written anywhere? I can't see it on either Steam or GOG pages.

It appears this game has Multiplayer features, I wouldn't be surprised if the devs would be like "We can't release the Linux version on GOG because Galaxy is not available". Let's hope they're smart and release it regardless.

Google plans their own version of Wine to run Windows games on Stadia

I don't paint Google as the types of building an emulator from scratch. I don't mind if they use Wine to accomplish the task but would be much appreciated if they'd contribute to Wine in an open source way.

Don't expect GOG to support the Steam Deck

Bad reply on GOG's side, I think they had better not reply at all than throwing the silly 'Install Windows' response.

Instead of the Steam Deck, I think GOG should support Linux on the desktop to begin with. They're already half way there, all that remains is the extra mile with native client and multiplayer support. Hell, some devs even refused to release their Linux versions due to lack of Galaxy entirely.

With some effort they can be the 2nd best Linux game storefront to buy from.

Following up from this announcement, I did ask the dev about a Linux GOG release and here's what he had to say.

QuoteAt the moment, the VR and LINUX builds are additions I create and manage from a personal interest, without much of a commercial upside. The game isn't huge on PC, but Steam allows me to experiment this way.

The burden of releasing on multiple platforms is to be honest more than one person can handle, and without a commercial upside that makes it difficult to add something like GOG.

Imagine the QA, testing, store support that needs to be done, it's substantial.

So I do appreciate GOG users, and always made sure they get every main update. But I don't see an easy path to provide a secondary platform to GOG, sadly.

I can kinda understand his reasoning, even if it does spell bad news for GOG users.

QuoteThe developer decided to do a native port, as they wanted the experience to be as good as possible for the Steam Deck.

Hopefully they won't stop there and release the Linux version on GOG too.
