22 May 2014 at 4:17 pm UTC

Quoting: EikeGreat!

... but does anybody know if there's a possibility to get a Steam key although I bought the retail version (back then in my Windows days)?
Probably not via Steam, but you can via GOG. GOG is introducing Linux support later this year.

So we found out about The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings coming to Linux after XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Total War: Rome II, and possibly a few other big names, but The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings made it out first? Curious!

Unvanquished Open Source FPS & RTS Alpha 27, Jetpacks Included

I have to agree, Liam, the jetpack looks out of place, at least in that image. I appreciate all the effort that the developers are putting into Unvanquished, however.

SuperTuxKart Open Source Racer Is Going Graphical With A New Engine
6 May 2014 at 1:27 pm UTC

Quoting: MikeThey should really sell this on steam to help fund the project and game engine (which would then help other devs by giving them a good open source game engine to work with). There's nothing to say that open source means no profit, and those who still want it for free could still get it.
I agree with this. That is how the elementary OS team does it as well. It offers elementary OS as a download for a default 10$ but allows people to download elementary OS for free right below that offer. I really would like to see SuperTuxKart gain more attention and funding.

New Unreal Tournament In The Works, Could See A Native Linux Version

Quoting: lordfraggerLet's hope they go back to the UT 2k3 and before formula. I completely lost interest once they introduced vehicles and large maps.
I don't mind new mechanics as long as they keep them in seperate gamemodes. There is nothing wrong with pushing the engines limits if you keep everybody happy with classic gamemodes.

Team Fortress 2 did this when they added all the classic gamemodes and subsequently there is a competitive scene for it.
Exactly, and that is what Unreal Tournament 2004 did. I don't understand how lordfragger lost interest if they were not forced to play those particular game modes.

Steam Hardware Survey For April 2014, Linux Rises From The Ashes
2 May 2014 at 1:55 pm UTC

I am glad that there's an increase, but it's a tiny one. When will we see a considerable jump? An increase of 1.00%, 0.50%, or even 0.25%?

Accounts no longer needed to buy games? That sounds like gaming free of DRM at its finest!

Don't Get Your Hopes Up On Borderlands 2 On Linux Says Randy From Gearbox

Quoting: entropyWasn't Gabe Newell saying recently that it turned out to be easy to convince publishers to support Linux? Gearbox obviously disagrees.
convincing to do new game for it is 100x easier than convincing for late port

when you do new game (if done correctly) you'll need minimal work. it will share marketing expense and you'll sell over all platforms. this is simple win which is not hard to persuade into

late port needs extra work, extra marketing... and there is a fact of how many people will buy it. lots of people already bought windows version to play native or on wine. now... this is where persuading over risk gets trickier
I wish more studios were like Frozenbyte. Trine was released for Windows in July of 2009, for Mac OS in November of 2010, and for Linux in April of 2011. url=[Now Frozenbyte is releasing the game for Linux again, but this time the developers are coding it themselves as opposed to outsourcing the port.

Heart Forth, Alicia Metroidvania RPG On Kickstarter, I Find Out What's With The Linux Stretch Goal
21 April 2014 at 2:05 pm UTC

Quoting: SabunContagion listed Linux as a stretch goal on their kickstarter. Now they have already released for Windows, and have only ever had a Windows executable since being on Steam. They claim to be working on it now but have no ETA, but have previously cited that "We'll do what we can but each platform requires separate license fees" and a possible ETA is "definitely this year". Those aren't very convincing.

They have only recently stated that what's next is Linux and Mac support, but it is further down the list. As my previous statement, for all those Linux gamers who backed it, it is very likely you'll have to wait up to 1 year or more from the Windows release.

I don't hold them in contempt, it's just right now we have nothing else but the developers few sparse words to go on. Unlike other games, which at least have a Linux executable even before full release (Wasteland 2 and Starbound for example).

For Divinity, just read the Kickstarter pledge "If Mac and Linux versions -and other languages- become available they will be free to owners of PC copies". Notice the usage of IF. They haven't planned for it. It's a "if we've got nothing better to do, then we'll do it" style of "supporting" Linux.

If I am wrong on any of this, please correct me. This is from me following these games and trying to keep up with what's happening. If I'm wrong, I'll be glad as it would mean they're serious about Linux.
Nothing wrong about that whatsoever. I have only ever backed 3 projects and those were open source projects on Indiegogo. Them being open source gave me a greater sense of security as opposed to financing developers developing proprietary software with a primary focus on Windows.

KartSim, A Multiplayer Kart Racing Game

Does not look like a combat racer/battle racer to me. I will stick with SuperTuxKart and the occasional Mario Kart.
