Valve adding the controllers must not be seen as a guarantee those will work in all games. Some games, mostly older ones, tried to implement their own support for gamepads and only work correctly with the XB360/Logitech ones. XBOne and PS4 gamepads still don't work correctly to this day in a number of titles.

The problem I have on Proton is the UI is corrupted, making it impossible to pass the start screen. I run a AMD card, if you are on Nvidia, maybe is a different case.
This is sad for me because this game has so much potential, but people developing it seems to have grabbed more than they can lift. The project is terribly late and serious bugs on the Linux port were left to rot.
The other game valve left the community to grab was L4D2, and that as another case of the wrong people taking the wheel. I sincerely hope they do not left another of their beloved franchises be taken by outsiders. I has been a disappointment after another.

For real? I bought this game and only played on Windows but i've been hesitant to play on Linux because people said that the native version is really bugged

I should had asked for a refund when I still had the chance for this one. All this years later, the thing still crashes if I change the graphics settings and, even more ridiculously, does not have multi-thread available on Linux, leading to much worse performance than in Windows.
And to add insult to injury, in Proton it is bugged.

Besides having a engine that privileges the Nvidia closed-source driver, another thing that bother me is that their cities are so lifeless, so few pedestrians. You go trough Las Vegas and begin to think: where are all the people?

Yesterday I was hosting a game and it crashed on me twice, but not on the finale. Once it was on the first stage and another in the second. I played it on a single player mode a couple hours before and it didn't crashed.
This is strange because it is generally a very stable game on my machine, and I generally only have problems with it while playing community maps that were made only for DirectX on Windows.

It would be nice if they fixed the sound on Linux, since surround is bugged and it doesn't auto-detect the output you are using. Also it always starts win 5.1 mode, regardless what setting you set before closing the game.
