Xorg is dead, long live Wayland - Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) dropping Xorg

There are definitely things that Wayland does okay, but nothing they do that is special over X11, and end up still needing compatibility layer to X11...
Performance wise, I notice very little difference between Xorg / Wayland. Like somethings feel a little smoother, other things feel slower. I definitely notice things just not working right in Wayland though. Weirdly, I had an issue where the Synology Drive app didn't want to work in Xorg, but would in Wayland... after a reboot, it was fine though.

Quoting: tohurIn my mind, the only thing Xorg needed fixing on was a better / more supported way to not run as root. Outside of that, they did all the work to make it modular during the development from XFree86. The problem is that people don't like maintaining old stuff, and want to play with new toys. That's all Wayland is. It'll be a new toy, until it isn't, then someone else will declare that it's crap and no one should be using it and then we'll be in the exact same boat as before...Quoting: reaperx7I love how Red Hat loves to push (force) people to buggy and incomplete software touting it as "stable" when the truth is far from reality.
Wayland is nice, but the fact that every compositor does everything inconsistent with each other, and often conflicts with how Xorg/XWayland does things, with pretty much everything the original developers intend, pretty much leave me saying "this isn't a good idea".
Honestly, nothing was wrong with Xorg, in my opinion. It works as intended like Windows GDI+. Yes there were some security flaws, but really, what was wrong with Xorg? I honestly see Wayland as a solution in search of a problem, not the other way around. If there was consistency with the compositors this wouldn't be a problem, but Plasma has their own problems, Gnome wants to be the rebellious child, Enlightenment is their own thing, Weston is sitting in the corner rocking back and forth thinking its a tea pot, and God knows what else the rest are doing running around the house aimlessly, but nothing is consistent while Xorg is sitting at the table, well behaved and saying "Oh so I'm not that important anymore? Have fun with the miscreants!" as it sits it's tea and reads the newspaper.
If you think Xorg is well "behaved" and not an issue you do not live in reality.. xorg is a utter mess and needs to go. frankly since swapping to Plasma wayland my PC performs much better

Huge update to Baldur's Gate 3 adds an Epilogue, new game modes and willy physics

Friend of mine has recently asked me what I think the greatest CRPG ever made was. I said Ultima IV.
That dates me for several reasons, since no one calls them CRPGs anymore. And Ultima IV being the peak of RPGs when there are so many that just haven't played any of that glorious series... The only other that would be ranked better, would be Alternate Reality. Unfortunately only The City and The Dungeon were ever released for it, so it still sits under Ultima IV.

Quoting: hardpenguinHaha, so true.Quoting: slaapliedjeNo, just old ❤️Quoting: EriMy evil dark urge playthough is about to happend, each update makes me want to start it harder. I will also reload the last save from my first character, for what I've seen that new epilogue is awesome.I think I'm broken, I just can't get into the game. Instead I've been getting my Orpheus2 into a 486 so that I can play the old Ravenloft RPG. Ha, I plan on going through the Gold Box games. Of course part of it could be that I don't like 5e.

Steam Deck - SteamOS 3.5.9 Preview 'Well Paced Edition' brings more fixes

Huh, I'll have to look on mine.
That said, anyone remember the Atari Lynx (and I think the Game Boy supported this too) where you could connect a cable and play multiplayer... I wonder how feasible that'd be to do with two Steam Decks...

Quoting: dopeytreeHey Liam and ~Co have you noticed bad wifi with the OLED vs LCD?
I noticed it's terrible on stable & beta channel. But gets fixed on preview channel.
It seems to not go above 110Mbps on anything except preview channel. When same location sat on sofa iPhone gets the full 650Mbps. Updates OLED to preview channel & it then gets up to 650Mbps on wifi ;D

This needs to basically be "Florida Man Simulator" With all that zaniness.
GTA games have notoriously been pretty bad about consuming video ram, which is where I think hand held devices would likely cry. But they can always optimize it to work better in such places. Though in all honesty, it wouldn't surprise me if they screw the PC crowd over and only release on PS5/whatever Xbox.

Quoting: LoftyThis is kind of what i was alluding previously. OLED hype is not misplaced, 0ms response and 100% black level is obviously impressive. But now we have 'Mura effect' to go along with 'chromatic abberation' and of course with monitors (not the deck) higher power usage and heat output. i guess burn in is a non issue now realistically.I connected my 486 build to my OSSC, output to my 77" LG OLED... looks amazing, considering the low resolution. But really, with OLED and HDR, there has been a lot of new work to make scanline emulation better looking. Sadly, the old tech will eventually die off.
LCD has come a long way. The gap might not be quite as large between OLED in certain areas if you get a newer panel with the right specs. Of course, OLED can improve just as LCD can, but both technologies probably have 'features' which are inherent to their design. just like a VA panel has poorer viewing angles than an IPS for instance.
https://www.gamingonlinux.com/forum/topic/5906/post_id=40716
(im not sure if this is related to a faulty panel, panel choice or if it's just a 'within tolerance' kind of thing.)
Personally i don't have a preference towards the complete black of OLED, i know it sounds weird but i find the ultra contrast off putting, but it depends on the content. perhaps i just go used to the lower contrast and 'glow' of an LCD screen. Im probably the only person on earth who thinks this lol.

Quoting: CyrilI'm definitely hoping that one day I'll be able to play through Diablo 1 and 2 on my Vampire Amiga! DevilutionX works great on it.Quoting: IggiQuoting: CyrilDevilutionX is a gem, I keep hope for something similar for Diablo II, that would be huge! The good news is that there are a few reimplementations already - just have a look at the list on https://osgameclones.com/diablo-ii/!
The bad news that none of them seems to be very far. If you still want to try: Riiablo probably is the farthest one (at least it was when I tried out all of them ~ one year ago, but my impression when looking at the project pages is that this hasn't changed)
I know very well this site, but unfortunately none of these projects is really active...
Riiablo is the only one with recent commits (less than a year ago), but it's a pitty it's in Java though.
So playing Diablo II on Linux natively it's not for now...
But I keep hope, one day we'll have something great!
VCMI (for Heroes III) was in hiatus for years (nearly 6 years between the 0.99 and 1.0 release), and look at his activity now and how good the project is!

Quoting: StoneColdSpiderHaha, he may want to see a doctor about that...Quotethere's one other little feature that they didn't seem to talk about, that plenty have been discovering to great surprise. I am of course talking about willy physics. Yes, all those people upset at release that there wasn't any wobbly bits can now rejoice. I don't think you really need to see it but video proof (NSFW, obviously). Glorious.Seems a future game for Dick Trickle........ Might be a bit stiff to work him in there though....... But im sure I can make him fit right in.....

Xorg is dead, long live Wayland - Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) dropping Xorg

My personal theory; a lot of the old hat people that worked on X11R6 and helped with XFree86 and Xorg have either died off or retired, so Wayland was created for the younger people to take up the mantle, and they didn't want to just ride the wave of the old fame, and created a new project.
Sure there were some good reasons behind it, but oof... it's taken it's time and still not really ready.

Quoting: whizseX11 was of course in contrast to Wayland loved by all and never faced any criticism. What is hilarious is the fact that Xorg was created based on XFree86 being this big monolithic thing that no one could keep updated. Xorg was supposed to be the new modular thing, where individual modules could be upgraded indefinitely and improvements could be made...
QuoteIf the designers of X-Windows built cars, there would be no fewer than five steering wheels hidden about the cockpit, none of which followed the same principles -- but you'd be able to shift gears with your car stereo. Useful feature, that.
QuoteThis is what happens when software with good intentions goes bad. It victimizes innocent users by distorting their perception of what is and what is not good software. This malignant window system must be destroyed.Oh, wait, maybe not.
