Granted, I'm not attempting to be antagonistic. To tell you why I use Debian and have mostly stopped using 'Debian based' distributions... It's because I've literally seen dozens of them come and go over the decades. They always are like 'well, we're Debian except just a few package differences...' but then those package differences break trying to install standard debian packages in them.
Even Ubuntu, 'we're just Debian, but release every 6 months and based on latest gnome' have now derived so terribly from a Debian install to be barely recognizable.
I'd probably actually use Mint if they had a Gnome set up, and they do not. They seem to specifically target all the smaller DEs, which is actually a good thing as it'll give them more of a chance to succeed.
The big industry shakeup with Red Hat saying they don't want people playing with their toys anymore, brings up the potential that Mint created the LMDE for in the first place, because who knows if Canonical will be purchased by someone and then close off as much as they can. Debian is one of the largest (if not the largest) community drive distributions, and can't exactly be 'owned' by any entity. Which makes it great for always being open, but less great for being Enterprise ready for most people.
But yes, there is a problem with people creating so many iterations of 'I can make a better Debian' when they could actually attempt to make Debian better. Ha, kind of the equivalent of just divorcing your wife to find a younger one that is almost the exact same, but smiles at you better, when you could have just asked your first wife to smile more.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyMint just has a weird space between wanting to be a better Distro than Ubuntu, and then a better Distro than Debian, when in some cases it'd be better to just improve Debian, no?Quoting: whizseNot you, more slaap. Of course slaapliedje has this tendency any time any distro whatsoever is mentioned to say basically "Why would anyone ever have any reason to use or develop any other distro but Debian? Gosh they must all be morons for even contemplating such a thing!"Quoting: Purple Library GuyThat does make feel bad and I want apologize. I'm not sure what it was in my reply that came of as antagonistic?Quoting: whizseAnyhow, most of us are just curious, not trying to question or attack Mint .Could have fooled me, to be honest.
So I can't really take it as being against Mint in particular. Still kind of rude.

Quoting: Nateman1000Here's my problem with that... IT IS TOO DAMN EASY! Like where is the fun with it just running? Gotten too simple! Getting old crap working on Windows 98 with a mix of weird hardware is just more fun!Quoting: slaapliedjeAnd here I was about to start playing them with the old 3dfx patches on my Win98 machine!IN THIS HOUSEHOLD WE MAKE STUFF RUN UNDER LINUX NO MATTER WHAT!

That is odd, Aspyr is a porting house... did they shift to an enhancement house?

QUESTION: Are original purchasers of these games grandfathered-in?
I'll be curious to see how controller support works. Even with in-game and Steam-overlay tweaks, the original D-pad navigation is still pretty wonky.
Quoting: PhlebiacQuotethey won't have a Native Linux version
No macOS version listed, either. Which seems odd, given Aspyr's history. Maybe there's still a chance they will do cross-platform in the end, like they did for Fahrenheit, Total War: Rome, and KOTOR2.

Wow, she'll be raiding the social security office soon!

Quoting: tpauLooks a bit brighter but not visually pleasing. A remake would have been my choice here. I think people already demonstrated that as a sparetime projectThey already did a remake of Tomb Raider, but they made certain puzzles and such easier, and skipped a bunch of them (at least that's what my brother said, I never did beat the original 3, but I have beaten all of them (except the latest trilogy) from Anniversary onward.
More teasers appear for upcoming Valve hardware

Quoting: EriHa, the x52 has bits for Linux. Not sure how compatible it is with the x56.Quoting: slaapliedjeQuoting: EriI want to be finaly out of the Meta ecosystem and their lack of Linux support, my Oculus Rift S is asking for a replacement so my hopes are with a new VR set. One day I will finally be able to remove my W10 partition, one day, step by stepI need someone to write a TargetUI replacement for the Thrustmaster Warthog to fully ditch Windows... pretty sure that's about the only thing I'm missing...
Thanks for reminding me that I need to look for a replacement of the X56 software xD I completely forgot about that, I haven't played a hotas game in a while, It's in collect dust mode.

- For codecs... I'm not sure, I haven't ran into codec issues in a LONG time...
- Wifi firmware is fixed with Bookworm / 12
- It DOES have a software center by default (has had one for the last few releases. Gnome-Software and Discover are both there for Gnome / KDE
- Flatpak is currently like two commands to enable
- update notifications are there. Not sure if they are out of the box (I just update whenever I use my computer, though I also am using Debian Sid). Or you can just enable the unattended ones.
- I think the software center might prompt for a dist-upgrade? I usually upgrade shortly before it's available though (that counts for any distro really).
- For this point; laptop management, yup. MTP support, yup. Pretty sure simple-scan is also installed by default.
Debian doesn't muck with the DEs and gives you what the DE developers give you. This is a good thing in my mind, but may not be the best for other's opinions. For example, I can't stand the Ubuntu bastardization of Gnome, and much prefer a default install that I can then pick and choose the extensions I want (like I add wobbly windows, move the dock to the left, and that's about it. I want the 'dash' to be hidden.)
I'm still not sure what the difference is anymore between Mint / Cinnamon. At one point they were both supposed to be Gnome-2 like, and one was GTK2 based and one was GTK3 based.. they're now both GTK3/4(?) based. The defaults seem to be a bit different (the two panel vs one). But you can also still use the Gnome flashback if you want the old gnome 2 style setup... But hey, more choices is good anyhow.

Quoting: tuxayoQuoting: slaapliedjeHonest question; what do they do different that would make me want to switch to Mint DE over just Debian?
This is not complete and just from memory:
- non-libre video codecs
- non libre wifi drivers (that's still not out of the box/with a checkbox in Debian right? One has to know the package to install IIUC)
- a software center by default, (type VLC in synaptic and show the results to a non IT person)
- flatpak setup by default. Important for non IT people to not end up with a years old Minetest of 0ad and not being able to play with friends.
- update notifications, important to have any hope a system is updated by non IT people
- major upgrades possible with a GUI tool (WIP, that's new, not prompted by default, one has to install and run it)
- things to check on Debian: laptop power management, MTP support, simple-scan installed by default
- anything else someone here know about?
Cinnamon is decent looking and complete functionally by default but just search for screenshots for Debian and Mint with Mate and XFCE and the difference will be striking. Root of the issue is Mate and XFCE not having different presets whose use is recommend for general public distros. A user-friendliness barrier for Debian, Fedora, openSUSE.
Overall a lot of stuff that will make a big difference for random people on the street. A lot of people coming at install parties have no particular IT knowledge and interest in tech, but a political one for libre software. (the rest is people wanting free IT help :-( and the remainder are some techies ^o^)

Amnesia: The Dark Descent Redux mod adds Vulkan and DirectX 12 support
14 September 2023 at 5:04 pm UTC
I have been looking at old hardware lately, and missed my Matrox Parhelia card... a card that came out as supporting DirectX 8.1... with some features for 9, but people expected a lot more, and by the time Doom 3 came out, the OpenGL was pretty well broken on the cards, so it couldn't run one of the most anticipated games. Was pretty much when Matrox left the gaming card industry. Their most successful gaming card was the G400 Max, which I think was only DirectX6 compliant. Wish someone would come into the game and actually push AMD/Nvidia aside as a contender... Intel keeps kind of flailing around with the ARC GPUs...

Quoting: pete910Ha, it's true.Quoting: slaapliedjeQuoting: pete910Have to ask, Why bother adding DX12 if you've done Vulkan ?Not all Vulkan cards are created equal? That'd be my guess.
Makes no sense to me .
Only thing I can think of is xbox maybe , no clue if it's on consoles or not.
Dare say same could be said for DX12 too
