Amusing story: Co-worker was asking me for a copy of something, I stuck it on a USB stick, then laughed as he pulled out a USB-C to USB-A hub just so he could try to copy the file, which then overheated the whole thing. Not sure what the deal is with the heat those cause. It didnt' lock the laptop up or anything, but he did say larger file transfers will lock up the USB bus due to it overheating and shutting down (or something like that, or at least causing enough errors he has to wait for it to cool off again.)

I don't know how we'd manage this, but if we could get gamers as a group to just stop buying games that aren't 'game of the year' editions that include all the DLC, then I'm sure publishers would get the hint. But we'd need some serious numbers (millions) of people to do this.

Quoting: SalvatosQuoting: ZlopezFrankly I don't think I understand why people still buy games at release. Between game-breaking bugs and day-1 patches, public release serving as additional playtesting, free content updates and paid DLCs released in a matter of weeks, it's almost like trying to watch a movie before they finish printing the DVD. For all its convenience, the Internet as a marketplace and content delivery medium has made the gaming industry lazy with quality control and complacent in its ability to keep extracting money from people in small doses. Then, for us, you have the added risk of unplayable or delayed Linux versions making me extra wary.Quoting: razing32Quoting: BrisseSTOP PRE-ORDERING
There's absolutely no point in pre-ordering, especially when using digital distribution such as Steam. It doesn't benefit you as a consumer one bit and it's always risky.
Sadly too late for that now.
Pre-orders , season pass (basically DLC Pre-order) , microtransactions in full price games , loot crates etc.
These things are becoming more and more ubiquitous and people are getting used to them. If you call them out you look like the bad guy.
I'm resolute to be cynical and watch the world burn :P
You are right, people just get used to this tactics. You don't even get the whole game on release. Because there is many missing things, that are added like DLC and the price is sometimes higher than the original game. The picture bellow is sadly accurate.
Between that, attractive discounts that always come within a year and already having a backlog of games, the only games I've gotten day-1 in recent memory are those I have crowdfunded.

I don't know, there is a certain draw for people like me who have close to 1k Linux games under Steam already, and depending on how they handle emulation...
Let's just say right now I use the Steam Link, and my brother and I played through Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite last weekend, and it was a blast. Granted that is a Windows game, but think of all the great fighting games supported by MAME.
Can't do that on the PS4, though arguably you can do it on a raspberry Pi. I've said before, I would be all for this, but at the same time I don't think I want to back it on crowd funding, since it's done by some rather shady individuals. Brian Fargo gets my crowd funding money, because he's delivered already two games that I wanted (Wasteland 2 and Numera.) But this Feargal Mac guy has already had some fishy results.

Looks like H-Hour: World's Elite, a spiritual successor to early SOCOM games may come to Linux

Awesome! We need more tactical shooters. I love games like Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, etc. If we could get the Tom Clancy games ported, I'd be in heaven...

I've been spouting this out at people for so long, but they just keep saying "SteamOS is a failure" or "Valve dropped all support for it." Come on, we all know the 'Valve time'. The fact they already have a release based on Debian Stretch is amazing on how much resources they have dedicated to it. Steam Machines... well it's arguable how much of a failure they are since Dell did do a hardware refresh on them a while back. But I'm still not sure if that was just bleed down from them updating essentially the same system with Windows. I think all the other ones have been stopped for production.
But it kind of sounds like Ataribox (hope they change the name, please change it...) will be SteamOS-ish. So not sure what the deal is there though. My hopes are kind of meh on that...
I think Valve isn't really in the hardware business. While yes they created the Link and Controller, they're both simply physical accessories to Big Picture Mode. It's kind of the same case with SteamVR how anyone can make a headset that complies with the API, while Valve themselves don't manufacture the hardware.

Quoting: MohandevirQuoting: stretch611As for a Half-Life 3 exclusive on Linux... it isn't going to happen. Valve is a corporation seeking profit. While the numbers of linux users is increasing, it is dwarfed by windows gamers. They will not annoy the majority of their market by making them wait even longer.
Half Life 3 isn't going to happen... End of discussion. Didn't I specify that HL3 is an example in my previous comment? I was just stating the fact that Steam Machines would have been much more successfull if Valve had released them with an exclusive game. I know the official position of Valve about exclusives. It was all hypothetical to show that if Steam Machines had been a success, all the issues about compatibilty and performances would have been taken care of a long time ago. Larger player base = Better support.
This said, there is a nuance to make: Steam Machines and SteamOS are 2 diffrent things. The failure of the Steam Machines doesn't mean that SteamOS is a failure. SteamOS still has a lot of potential. Like you said, it's an awesome tool to prevent Microsoft from doing something foolish. But yeah, Valve could put a lot more of it's weight behind it.

That's just crazy, even 1% of people who use computers on a daily basis is a HUGE margin. I agree, someone was told that the Linux numbers can't possibly be higher than Mac numbers. Adjusting it that much is nonsense. And the fact they seem to still not be satisfied by the numbers...

yeeeah....kinda.
"ok, there are definitely 500k people using linux...or maybe 100k...or none. Wait, no; everyone is, er... let me just manipulate these numbers a bit... does 600k sound about right?"
if all linux desktop usage is within their margin of error, that's one hell of a margin for error. i'm really curious to see their theory now, because it sounds like it could be an entertaining read bahahaha

Instead it's filled with people sitting on their laptops only because they may want to be around other humans for a while.
i took it as a personal opinion, and thought it was funny....while he also calls out a phenomenon as sort of peculiar at least, the way a comedian does; but i realize a lot of folks don't like comedy either. also people sometimes go out of their way to be a stereotype...it's an attempted identity thing, and that human behavior is only one of many factors that make his comment that it's not a very good poll 100% legitimate. demographics matter. i don't think anyone would be surprised to see macs in a coffee shop, which is why it's funny. "lighten up" would be understated advice. cmon guys...
i mean if i were one of those people i'd respond with something like curly's "hey" >:\ "i resemble that!"

I randomly have a coupon for 70% off Supreme Ruler Ultimate, which would make it a 5 USD game. Decided not to buy it because it's not released for Linux.
Seemingly I just need to hold my ground and only buy Vive or Linux supported games (unfortunately that means I still support Windows gaming in some regard until we can get better vulkan/vr support for Linux games.)

It’s comments like this that reflect poorly on a community.
