Quoting: slaapliedjeHonest question; what do they do different that would make me want to switch to Mint DE over just Debian? Debian has a much more flexible installer (still one of the best if you need software raid, or anything funky).
Probably nothing that would make you want to switch to Mint DE (or any other kind of Mint). But I don't want flexible or anything funky, I want simple no muss no fuss. And I want all my media to already work, and all that kind of stuff.
As a side note, I don't actually use Cinnamon. I use Mate.
Ha, was going to set them up side by side. (LMDE vs Debian MATE Live)
LMDE seems to only have a Cinnamon ISO?

The Debian 12 LiveCD with MATE failed to install with UEFI set for Gnome-boxes.

But installer-wise, Mint has more options for partitioning (for encyrpting home). but are otherwise pretty much the same. (speaking of Calamares, you can also pick the standard Debian installer, which is a 'no fuss, no muss, you can also just select 'set up the drive for me.')

Not a Star Trek movie because it's way too serious, and a Tarentino version will be hated by a lot of Star Trek fans. But yes, I'm eager for a sci-fi Tarentino movie!
Nah, Tarantino is a huge Star Trek fan and has laid out the sort of movie he'd make in some interview, had some great ideas.

Quoting: whizseFWIW, Debian does also provide an installer that gives you Cinnamon as a desktop by default. It's provided by the Live Install images.

These uses the Calamares installer which might be a bit easier for beginners?
Yeah, I probably should have also mentioned the LiveCDs that literally use the same (or extremely similar) installer that most generic Distros use these days. Thanks for that! I use them to repair systems, generally.

Quoting: tuubiIf that makes you doubt my Linux chops, maybe it helps if I tell you that I ran Gentoo for a couple of years as my daily driver back when it was relatively new and anything but user friendly. Just getting things up and running took a couple of days of bootstrapping, configuring and compiling. Back then, I had fun doing that and I learned a lot in the process.
This doesn't mean you know Linux, just means you're a sadist.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyI don't use it but I'm glad it exists, 'cause if odd things happen with Ubuntu I could end up still able to use Mint thanks to its existence.
Or I mean you could just install Debian and pick Cinnamon during install...

That would be fine if Mint simply slapped a different DE on Ubuntu/Debian and called it a day. Would be a bit silly if they did, don't you think?
Honest question; what do they do different that would make me want to switch to Mint DE over just Debian? Debian has a much more flexible installer (still one of the best if you need software raid, or anything funky). These days it's just a matter of install, maybe run 'apt install nvidia-driver' and be done with it. My last few installs (that were non-nvidia) just worked out of the box with all drivers / hardware detected and is rock solid.
Maybe you're right, or wrong, I don't know exactly what Mint does or not (but I don't think it's just "that")...
But the thing you seem to forget is that Purple Library Guy don't like much tech things, as he said about it many times, so I'm sure just install Mint (classic or Debian Edition) is simpler for him than to install Debian.
Last time I installed Mint DE, it wasn't much easier than Debian. You can always have Debian just try and figure out a hard drive scheme automatically for you, then just click click, put in username, etc, then reboot. You don't even really need to add any repos anymore with Bookworm, the firmware ones are just added in. I'll convert him one day to the Debian side. :P

(edit: made sure to specify Mint Debian Edition opposed to Mint, the Ubuntu based one).

Quoting: EriI want to be finaly out of the Meta ecosystem and their lack of Linux support, my Oculus Rift S is asking for a replacement so my hopes are with a new VR set. One day I will finally be able to remove my W10 partition, one day, step by step
I need someone to write a TargetUI replacement for the Thrustmaster Warthog to fully ditch Windows... pretty sure that's about the only thing I'm missing...

Amnesia: The Dark Descent Redux mod adds Vulkan and DirectX 12 support

Quoting: pete910Have to ask, Why bother adding DX12 if you've done Vulkan ?

Makes no sense to me .

Only thing I can think of is xbox maybe , no clue if it's on consoles or not.
Not all Vulkan cards are created equal? That'd be my guess.

Quoting: KimyrielleIt's kinda strange that they'd drop Linux support from an engine already having it. But to be honest, I see no reason to treat this game different than any other Windows-only game I've bought lately. If it runs well in Proton, I am going to get it (sounds a bit similar to Birth of the Federation, which I absolutely loved back then!).

Let's be honest, Proton has made native ports somewhat obsolete.
All Proton does is make us keep chasing the 'best version of Proton'. The best version of a game should always be if the Developers actually properly support the Linux Native build. Sadly, a large percentage of all the native Linux builds we've gotten over the years have not been properly supported (Civilization VI is a great example of this).

Proton will always have regressions. You may have one version of Proton work great for a game... until that game gets patched, then you need to find a different version of Proton. It's a moving target for newer games. Older games may just work and you set them up to work, and they'll just work. But then you also have rolling Linux distros that'll potentially break things as well.

There are Windows games not properly running on newer versions of Windows, so I am not sure how strong a point that really is.

If a game is important enough, the WINE/Proton developers will fix it fairly quickly. If a native Linux version breaks, the devs tended not to care more often than not. Yes, Civ VI is a prime example of that. In my experience as of late, once a game runs in Proton, it tends to stay that way more often than not.

And if people insist on using rolling release distros, they shouldn't be surprised to see stuff break left and right. Comes with the territory. :P
I have definitely had random ones from month to month that stop working and I have to futz around with the settings to get it to work again (sometimes just picking a different version of Proton). This actually happened to me the other day with Aliens: Colonial Marines. It worked right out of the box the first few times i ran it. Few days later, I tried to run it again and it'd crash at the splash screen. Forced the 8-9 Proton (not sure what version it was using before) and then it magically worked again.

Pretty simple answer to those not willing / able to keep patching the Linux version; don't buy their games anymore. Ha, I have so many in my backlog at this point, I can skip a few here and there.
