Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 'Faye' enters Beta
13 September 2023 at 5:08 pm UTC

Quoting: Purple Library GuyI don't use it but I'm glad it exists, 'cause if odd things happen with Ubuntu I could end up still able to use Mint thanks to its existence.
Or I mean you could just install Debian and pick Cinnamon during install...

Quoting: fabertaweI detest woke but I can't say I've picked up on much in the new Star Wars stuff. If there is any it hasn't detracted from my enjoyment of it as great sci-fi. Star Trek on the other hand is packed with it.
Star Trek has been "woke" since the 60s. That's what it's always been about at the core--equality among all intelligences of whatever race, gender or species, human rights for all, difficult questions about how to get the law to be just but respect persons and such like ethical conundrums. It's when they forget about that stuff and turn it into a shoot-em-up that it goes off the rails. Not that there can't be a good deal of violence in a good Star Trek bit--but it has to be grounded in something.
Ha, yeah when they tried to make Star Trek more like Star Wars...

Star Trek has always been the more intellectual of the two franchises. The series in the 60s were ground breaking for many reasons. Like not only did they put women on the bridge of what is in essence a naval vessel, they put a black woman there! TOS is still my favorite series out of all of them. Not sure if it's the 'Old western' feel to it, the fantastical story lines, or the fact that not all of the aliens in it were just some people in makeup (remember the Medusan that was basically a glowing thing in a box, and anyone who saw it would go insane, and Spock had to converse with it to navigate through a dangerous area?).

Original Star Wars trilogy, and even the Prequels had some intelligent world building, and great things undergoing in it. Then the sequel trilogy came out with what was in essence a goddess worship movie... "Hi, I'm some random person, but can totally win a light saber dual, even though I hadn't seen one until the other day..."

New Star Trek (anything that came after the Big Three were canceled and the TNG movies) has all been pretty spotty at best. They should require all of the writers to actually binge watch TOS, TNG and Enterprise at the very least. They should also require that ZERO new stuff about the Borg should be written. Like the Borg are absolutely overdone...

Also, stop messing with Khan. Just stop! The only good thing about Discovery is they finally moved the time period far forward from the Big Three (TNG, DS9, VOY). That is where Discovery should have started.

The 2009+ movies: Their casting was pretty much perfect. It's a shame J.J. Abrams was the head of them... I'd love to see a David Finch or Quentin Tarantino Star Trek Movie...

Quoting: KimyrielleIt's kinda strange that they'd drop Linux support from an engine already having it. But to be honest, I see no reason to treat this game different than any other Windows-only game I've bought lately. If it runs well in Proton, I am going to get it (sounds a bit similar to Birth of the Federation, which I absolutely loved back then!).

Let's be honest, Proton has made native ports somewhat obsolete.
All Proton does is make us keep chasing the 'best version of Proton'. The best version of a game should always be if the Developers actually properly support the Linux Native build. Sadly, a large percentage of all the native Linux builds we've gotten over the years have not been properly supported (Civilization VI is a great example of this).

Proton will always have regressions. You may have one version of Proton work great for a game... until that game gets patched, then you need to find a different version of Proton. It's a moving target for newer games. Older games may just work and you set them up to work, and they'll just work. But then you also have rolling Linux distros that'll potentially break things as well.

Quoting: Talon1024If only more game developers would follow the examples set by the early id Software and the early Frictional Games, and release their source code...

I know that's just a pipe dream, however.

And nowadays, access to the source code isn't even required in order for developers to do visual upgrades or "remasters" like this.
Speaking of, someone should update the engines for the original games; Penumbra. Still need to get around to beating those...

Quoting: spacemonkeyThe Steam Deck has awesome performance, but for portable VR (like the Quest) we need 3664x1920 resolution and at least 72fps. The problem is that the Quest has it's own low spec library. Deckard has to be able to run VR games intended for a (high end) PC (because that is what people have in their Steam library)
Realistically 90fps is the minimum for not-spew-inducing frame rates. You REALLY feel them in VR below that.

Quoting: ElectricPrismPrediction:
A. They will do away with the glossy screen entirely -- and go to Etched Glass.
B. They will upgrade the joysticks to be more wear resistant
C. Bigger Battery / Better battery life.
D. They might bump the resolution to 1920x1200 (Although I have no personal problem with the 1280x800.
E. OLED screen to conserve more power and for brighter use in daytime spaces (bus stop, etc...)
F. Thinner screen bezel. (that black boxy border around the screen)
G. Slightly smaller size (Similar to how the original Xbox had those big controllers at first and then the next iteration was more refined and slightly smaller)
H. Next Bump up of the CPU/GPU -- it would most likely be very similar.
I. More RAM.
J. More accurate touch screen.
K. And obviously -- better Wifi Module (Steam Deck v1 Wifi Module doesnt play nice with all routers and was a PITA requiring reflashing from recovery4.img and on all my 5 decks)
L. Oh, and of course all the NVME would get bumped up to the faster speed, 64bg would be replaced by 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options (as 1TB 2230 NVME is a thing now, technically 2TB is aswell, however they usually skip a generation of top tech to keep costs affordable.)

I would really be curious to see them shrink it by 10% or 15%.

A. Probably; likely will cost less in manufacturing overall to have single type of screen.
B. Maybe? The Joysticks are quite nice and I haven't read a lot of people complaining of drift, unlike the Switch's Joycons.
C. This is always the want of people. Even Samsung is kind of crap with sticking with the same battery size, and then defaulting to 85% charge max right off the bat...
D. Bumping to 1920x1200 will require a much beefier CPU/GPU to keep frame rates playable, plus that means more battery punishment, Not to mention when you're dealing with a screen that small already, the advantages of that high of a resolution is rapidly lost.
E. This one I totally agree with; except the tech still needs to be where the OLEDs don't diminish / need to be 'shaved' so often, and won't wear out so fast.
F. I wonder how much of the bezel size is due to finding the right manufacturer for the size / shape they were looking for, not to mention some other requirements for toughness, etc. Easier to protect a screen with larger bezels...
G. For the size... I'm guessing a lot of people are perfectly fine with the size. I keep thinking how small it actually is... when there isn't a massive case on it (I have both a dBrand and got the recent jsaux one as well, and they both add quite a bit of bulk to it). I'm curious who has a lot of issue with the size (I could see someone arguing for it to be lighter for sure).
H. The problem with upgrading GPU/CPU, Battery, plus shrinking it... the tech just needs to be a lot better for it to be worth it for a 'gen 2' Steam Deck. the first two conflict with the third!
I. Not sure why you'd really need more RAM... it's ran everything I've thrown at it so far (in regard to RAM, could use a bit more 'oompf' for some heavier games with more details turned on.)
J. I haven't had issues with the touch screen (though admittedly haven't used it much).
K. People have swapped it out for the AX210 (I've considered doing this as I think I have one laying about). I haven't had issues with mine and routers, they seem to work fine. Also... 5? Holy shit, dude!
L. Ha, I've considered upgrading my storage to 2TB as well... I may wait until there are 4tbs...

I literally just put my Xbox 360 controller next to my Steam Deck's controller, and the handles are pretty much the exact same size, along with the triggers, etc.

Would be interesting to have this running SteamOS as well. Get all that VR love on the Linux side from Valve!

Quoting: ElectricPrism...I mean. Star Trek has been dead to me for a while now.. especially after the "ActionMan" movies painted Picard as a psychopathic killer instead of a wise diplomat sage....

Star Trek has been action schlock for a while now.

I guess AI/Neural Networks are our only hope or restoring it to its pristine original form about showing moral conundrums and navigating ethically complex situations objectively.

I've finally given up on it after Strange New Worlds had a dancing Klingon boy band - that episode was actually embarrassing. I thought the first series of Discovery was good but it's been going rapidly downhill since. No comparison with the excellent Star Wars stuff that's ongoing.

I haven't watched any of Strange New Worlds since I heard they once again had to try and mess with Khan. Just stop you idiots. Unless you're going to make a movie based on the books by Greg Cox (which fit perfectly within 'reality' and still keep all of the Canon of Space Seed / Wrath of Khan. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eugenics_Wars:_The_Rise_and_Fall_of_Khan_Noonien_Singh

he I dont remember those space hippies, its been many years since I watched TNG, but I picture this in my mind

Space Hippies were from TOS, not TNG.

Quoting: wvstolzingI wonder if I can I play as the blue colored bug people with antennae…

Or space hippies. Surely, those must be among the 'minor nations' mentioned.
Always need to play Andorians!

So this kind of is lame, here's why;
1) There are already mods for Stellaris to make it a Star Trek game. https://stellaris.paradoxwikis.com/ST_NewHorizons
2) In the same description of saying it's going to be before TNG, they state it's going to fit in with Star Trek Lore. They didn't meet the Cardassian empire until much later, it'd make a lot more sense to use Tellerite, Andorian, etc. Granted this would put it in Enterprise era (which I think would be really cool. Make the Humans/Vulcans be kind of wimpy.)
3) Well, yes if this were native Linux, I'd buy it right meow.

Space Hippies; Spock should play the harp more for sure.

Quoting: slaapliedjeI really should try the Tutorial
Honestly, I think the tutorial is pretty bare-bones, but it provides fairly easy start conditions and a rudimentary explanation of the most important systems.

OTOH, given that CK3 is the first grand strategy game I played, it all went smooth enough. Getting into it will probably grow harder over time, as they're piling additional features on top. So I guess starting early is key.

Even then there's still a lot of room for trial and error, to see what effect certain actions would have. But it's actually part of the fun to discover those. One time I ended up as a 6 year old and everyone in the realm seemed to think it was time for independence (as usual when that short reign penalty kicks in). As an adult, I'd throw a couple feasts and befriend the major parties to get things under control, but those weren't options available to a child. Luckily, I had a few infidels rotting away in the dungeon, and after some exemplary executions everyone felt it was probably for the best to fall back in line. Problem solved!
Ha, I also keep re-installing Hearts of Iron IV because I'll watch a documentary on WWII, so get an itch to play it...
