So.. comparing something someone has read about specs that a company claims vs someone who owns a Vive already and has tried one of the heaviest games, Elite: Dangerous, and trying to get smooth framerates and acceptable display resolution with tweaking super sampling, I can say with pretty good authority that it currently is not possible to drive that game onto double 4k screens without yacking.
Specs of my machine;
Asus STRIX 1080GTX OC
32gb DDR4 RAM
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00GHz
It's not the 'slightly different images' that drives VR, that's for stereoscopic display. Hell my Note 4 can handle that, and does pre-rendered scenes quite nicely. But try adding all the other things in that make the Vive great, tracking, interaction, etc. Being able to drop straight to the floor without having the visual output stutter for even a second is unacceptable performance. Hell, I was trying to watch a movie without much movement of my head, and Big Screen froze and it was disorienting as hell!

I didn't think Dirt or War Thunder supported VR? Software definitely needs to support VR for it to really work well. But wow, Dirt would be AWESOME, I haven't tried War Thunder yet. Project Cars requires some serious tweaking for it to be nice in VR (mainly sizing up your cockpit).

I was discussing this with a co-worker who has a Vive with the newer/smaller box. Mine is this gigantic pre-order box.
So improvements they've already done;
1) Storage box is much smaller.
2) Newer Vives come with a '3-in-1' flat cable instead of the giant fat one. Depending on who you ask it may or not be 'better'.
3) New Lighthouses (with one instead of two fans) are on their way out, so in theory there will be a price drop with them.
4) Prototype controllers have been seen which look absolutely fantastic, especially compared to the Oculus Touch.
5) Wireless attachments (not sure on battery life, but it would certainly rock for the room scale stuff!)
HTC themselves have stated that they don't see a 'Vive 2' until 2 or 3 more years.
People hoping for double 4k screens don't realize that current computer hardware simply isn't up to the task.

I'm guessing those same Vulkan extensions is the reason that the 'Full Vulkan support' drivers I had previously (275.26) weren't enough for SteamVR.
Either way on my Debian Sid install, I get 'SteamVR is not available because a supported headset was not detected.' then onto the base stations not starting.

Hopefully they can get this sorted. On the upside the 'steam-devices' package from Debian had already set up the udev rules. I need to verify if they're actually working correctly, because I have the same udev rules for the steam controller, and it always gets confused...

Damnit, now I decide... remove Debian's packages for the nvidia driver and install the driver by hand... or try to wedge Ubuntu packages in....

So, my brother and I played SS3:BFE split screen and two player and I have to say that Croteam isn't one of those lame companies that make a PC game be only single player or online gaming only just so they can sell more copies. The performance on my 980GTX was fantastic, so not sure what cards everyone who was suffering from OpenGL performance have. But either way, a higher performing engine maybe so that if I ever go 4k I can still get awesome split screen action with vulkan is fine by me!

Seems to me that a huge reason not to like GOG is that their owners never gave us Witcher (1 or 3). Personally I use Steam because of the workshop (makes managing / downloading mods easy!), plus I have an HTC Vive, plus steam controllers, Link, etc. Pretty much I am now Valve's bitch. But that okay by me. Makes managing the game library REALLY easy.
GOG doesn't even give us auto updates, which with any of the modern games is more or less required. Now if they had GOG Galaxy for Linux, it would do the updates for us.

Sweet, supports local co-op. Question is does it work over Steam Link with two game pads. Far too often I get a game and the game pad support is sloppy and doesn't work quite right or I have to play around with settings for 20 minutes to get them configured correctly.
I think this is the main thing that Steam Machines / Link need to work on.

I never said they were a huge success either, but failure would mean they are no longer being made/sold/updated, which is clearly not the case. Hell, they were barely even advertised outside of Steam itself. Let's face it, Atari (After the Tramiels took over) style marketing simply doesn't work in this day and age if you want to push machines. Dell still sells Ubuntu on Laptops, and I bet those don't sell all that well either, but they must be making enough prophet on it to keep it up.
The manufacturers updating thei steam machines is also a good sign they are selling more than the utter fail some people seem to push.
Remember when there were more than just two giants and the trailing one? Thise were glorious console days, and it would be nice if we had some more choices.

The First Encounter seems to me to be the first full fledged game in VR. I don't really count wave shooters and multiplayer only games. They always feel more like Demos. Like those old loaders on the Atari ST, where you had a mini-platformer game, to jump to a door you would go through for the real game.
Not to say they aren't great fun, but nothing to hold your attention for very long.
