Torment: Tides of Numenera gets a release date

Ha, Obsidian is like the "I pick up after everyone else and make the sequels that are hit and miss" company. Neverwinter Nights 2, Knights of the Old Republic 2, Fallout New Vegas, etc.

They kind of get the cast offs after the studio who made the original game decided to work on other projects. Some of their games are epic, some are not so much. Though I believe they did make the original for Pillars of Eternity, and I think Tyranny is the somewhat sequel to that?

Anyhow, I think they make pretty good games and after reading the why of why KOTR 2 was terrible, it makes sense. PUBLISHERS ARE DICKS! 'Nough said.

Anyhow, that's why it's awesome that inXile are making the games they are and doing well via Kickstarter. Fargo is the king.

If you've never played the original Bard's Tale, they also were ported to Linux and included in the goofy parody RPG Bard's Tale.

I didn't exactly pre-order this game... more like kickstarted Bard's Tale IV at a level that I get this game thrown in! I still need to beat Wasteland 2 (Wasteland 1 was completed many moons ago, and if I recall I didn't even cheat, even though I found out about a cheat where you could write protect the floppy disk before leaving a room after clearing it out, and then go back in and get the same items over and over again..)

Tried playing the updated Wasteland 1 and got killed in the first mission of cleaning rats out of the garden, or whatever it was...

Stefan Achatz, the developer who helps get Roccat devices properly working on Linux to end his work
15 December 2016 at 6:40 am UTC

I too bought a Roccat keyboard (Ryos MK pro) and mouse (Tyon, love it) because of their Linux support. I always kind of thought that they did pay him something, considering the link on roccat's website when you try to download the Linux drivers points to the sourceforge page.

Granted maybe he's just burned out (that's what it reads as to me). It also kind of sounds to me like maybe roccat decided to do something odd with their newer devices, and that he was only going to support just that last one.

The previous devices all work very well, though I have debated whether or not I should bring my Ryos MK Pro into work and buy a MK Glow to more match the mouse, but now I'm not so sure...

Edit: Actually now that I think about it, it was probably due to the interview on this site that made me buy the keyboard in the first place. Maybe we should just get Roccat to sponsor Gaming On Linux...

I am just thinking that Pink Floyd's Animals album should be the soundtrack.

Over 1,000 games have released on Steam this year with Linux support

Quoting: amkHi people.
I just registered to express my opinion about this, I had to.

Yeah, the number looks cool, but as others posted, many of those released are crap.

I visit GOL from time to time just to see what's new that can maybe a good time waster, but sadly, whole PC gaming business is what it is. I intentionally wrote "PC", not just Linux gaming.

I game since my MZ-800, I'm not a subject to ignorance as many younger people.

Today's titles, including most of so called AAA ones, suffer from two problems.
First, they suck as there is mostly just a lot of content, but missing game itself. More like interactive movie, often with completely unoriginal story on top of that. And open-world, crafting and sandbox words are making me sick. Or there isn't that much of movie parts either, just crap.

-- snipped a lot of good rant.

This is pretty much why I pulled out my Atari STs and have been playing games on those, even though I have just over 1700 games in Steam.

Gaming industry is going down and all you can say is 1k games are supporting Linux?!?!? First of all, pushing "Build for Linux" in Unity editor is not SPUPPROTING LINUX you stupid traitors!!! 99% of games in last 3 years where Unity crap default assets games, indy bullshit and poor AAA console DLC/Seasson_pass fest "ports".
Everybody is focusing on VR which is failing it will barly happen on Windows, Linux can forget about it; at least in this VR hype wave, last one failed in '90s.
Is it even possible with you traitors to have a game that is "ported" on Linux and to say that that game is objectively tehnicaly bad?(not looking at content)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_video_game_crash_of_1983
^this happened because games where pure shit

How old are you?

I have start Videogaming with the Pong Console, then with the Atari 2600, the CBS (ColecoVision, the Commodore VC 20, C64, Amiga 500, A2000, A4000 and from 1998 on a Windows PC.

So i know the Gaming History and why Manufacturers went bankruptcy. In the 1980-1990 it was not because the games are crap. It was about the self-marketing. Many small game companies in UK went bankruptcy in this time, because they don't have a Publisher at this time.

Now you say all Unity Games are Crap, yes many of the Unity Games are Crap (70 %), but not all.
You say many AAA Games Ports are Crap? Yes here you are right: Many AAA Ports (Windows -> Console, Console -> Windows) have Crap Ports, because people like you buy every AAA Shit.

So if Windows have a Crap AAA Console Port you think the Port was better, if the game was a Windows (Crap Console port) to Linux Port?

So you think many Indi Games are Crap? Yes on Steam are 20 % Indi Games Crap.
And yes on Steam's EA and GL are some Scammers. Most of the big AAA (Who decides whether a game is high-class (AAA)?) productions are Crap.

If you support Publisher like Ubisoft or EA, then you are an Idiot.

Did you know thats we had on Linux until the year 2013 ~90 Commercial Gameports?
After 2013 we got more and more Games on Linux. Yes most are Crap, but this Crap you have on Windows, too.

In your words: 60 % of all Games on Windows are Crap.

To the VR thing: If VR fails in the future we will see.
The VR in the 90 fails, because the technology was not yet so far and the people had since there was no desire for VR.

Did you remember the Commodore CDTV?
This was the first Gaming Console with CD's 1990/1991.

Did you know thats this Console fails, because it used CD's at this time? Now look at the Consoles today: Every big Console maker use CD's/BR's.

I hope you know what it means to be ahead of its time and thus also fail on the technical side. This happened exactly in the 1990s

The opposite was true in the US. It was the publishers themselves that pretty much caused the Video Game crash in the 80s. Activision had split off from Atari because Time Warner had changed their royalty policies, and suddenly all these other video game companies started splintering off and publishing whatever crap they could. People were tired of being shoveled shitty arcade ports (Pacman on 2600 was atrocious, and Joust had floating eggs that would never land). So Most brand new games would hit stores, sit there for a few weeks then go into the bargain bin.

Fortunately, most of the games that are 'indie' are already straight into the cheap end of things. It's the 60 dollar games with 60 more dollars worth of DLC upon release that are ending up in the list of 'will buy when on sale'. Ultimately I hope more and more people will refuse to buy games that are empty shells without DLC. I have enough video games to last me the rest of my life at this point.

I do find the comment earlier about VR failing in the 90's. It never actually took off. Atari canned the headset with the most potential, and disappeared into Video game history. Apparently Virtuality never even got paid for their efforts. But even then, it was pretty simple head tracking. With the Vive and full roomscale, Virtual Reality is an actual thing now. It's just a matter of the big guns firing their bullets (Bethesda releasing Fallout 4 VR) and then others will join in.

<snipped>.

Sorry for snipping, but what this got to do with Linux gaming? This is a general DLC rant that belongs elsewhere imho.

Anyway, on topic I will try sharing with some developers to see if they have the time and surely the incentive to post their thoughts.

My take on it? I agree with everything Liam has stated, annoying a developer is only going to want them to *not* develop for Linux.

Well, my point was along the lines of it being difficult to support Linux Gaming when it is getting more difficult to justify supporting gaming at all.

I hate the fact I have to reboot into Windows at the moment to use my Vive, and there have been plenty of the troll type that says "why bother porting, just use Windows." Which to me is pretty close to 'Why choose democracy when everyone around you is Nazi?'

Like I said, the devs are usually just out to make a great game. Troll the likes of Electronic Arts if you want to annoy someone.

Pretty much my philosophy in life. It is the answer to world peace.

I was going to keep this simple, but decided to throw in my own little rant though.

I really REALLY want to buy Total War: Warhammer. While Feral is awesome and it would be one of the few games I didn't buy previously on Windows because I knew it was coming (unlike the "It's going to get a port, and no it isn't and then it is, then it isn't of Mad Max"), but I have this problem of the original developer being a cunt. And by this I mean all the reviews that state you basically get a shell of a game unless you pack on DLC.

DLC needs to die in a fire. It pretty much makes me just give up on a lot of games these days until they are released with a Game of the Year version. I mean even with the recent sale on it, with just the major DLC it still adds up to 120 or so.

Unfortunately developers are going to continue to do this until we, as consumers, make a stand and start refusing to buy the crap. While I have been picked here and there for Crusader Kings 2 (what is it with strategy games thinking they can do this worse than everyone else?) I think I've gotten a bit angry after I've seen how many different things they have. Like soundtracks, really?

Granted, earlier today I was talking to a friend about how lame it is that a physical copy of a new game costs the same or sometimes less than a digital download, and you generally still get a printed manual, and a CD, even if it comes with a steam key as well. Ugh, I bought Postal III to show I was a fan of Running with Scissors (too bad they outsourced that and it ended up being a piece of crap) and it came with two DVDs and a piece of paper with a steam key on it... and I kid you not, you installed the two disks and then it required the steam key to be added to your library so it could download another 10gb... as if installing the two disks was overwritten anyhow.

So developers need to stop being cunts to us. I'm stressing here that this is NOT Feral's or any porting houses fault. They know we want games like this. Granted I shouldn't just blame the developers, no... we should point the finger were it belongs. The goddamn publishers. Most developers don't care about DLC, they just want their game out there and for people to love their creation most of the time. The publishers are assholes and think they can get away with all this crap, mainly because we have to have the full game!!! Even if that full game costs twice as much as it should...

I didn't have a problem with Neverwinter Nights and their modules that they sold, because they were in essence selling you entirely new games for 5-10 bucks! That's a model I could get behind again. Then we went from Bioware's genius to Bethesda's Horse Armor..... and it just got worse from there.

Ha, the new ghostbusters game, from what I heard had DLC to remove the stripes from the uniforms for the 'classic' version... it was like 2 dollars for that...

It looks like more classic Topware Interactive games are coming to Linux

Quoting: DamonLinuxPLIf someone ever port The Witcher 1 to Linux - this should be native port. Because game use old Aurora Engine and this engine have support for Linux and OpenGL API.
CD Projekt RED completely replaced the renderer, though, making it use Direct3D. They'd need to completely rewrite the renderer again, to OpenGL, because theirs uses features not available in the old renderer.

As for middleware... It uses SpeedTree. No idea if it supported Linux back then and/or if the old data files are an issue.

In short, porting The Witcher 1 won't be easily.

Quoting: KeyrockI find it much more likely that T will be what eventually allows us to play this game.
Sorry if I sound like a broken record, but we still need more contributors. :P

Witcher 1 already plays fairly well under Wine, but Xoreos needs to happen for so many more reasons! Pretty sure NwN 2 at least runs terribly in Wine. But having tools and updated engine bits would be awesome.
