Quoting: soulsource
Quoting: RaabenI have had so many mechanical, UI, quest, and dialogue bugs
This. As much as I love the game, the bugs are extremely annoying. One really has to save every few minutes, just so one can reload if one runs into a game-breaking issue...
Huh, the only bugs I've ran into so far with 6-ish hours of play, is graphical black boxes that kept appearing (this is on my desktop with 7900 XT).

Granted, I lost an hour-ish of play because I ran into a room where a bunch of traps blew me up... and hadn't saved, since newer games tend to autosave every five steps... I need to get back into the habit of saving all the time again.

The 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard looks awesome

I'm on the side with 'needs numpad', there are older games that absolutely require the numpad (I'm talking games like Dungeon Master mostly).

Quoting: slaapliedjeWait, SteamOS runs on the Teslas? Since when? I knew they ran some form of Linux, but it is more likely it is more similar to the Atari VCS (apertis is what that is based upon, and it is a Debian based distro designed for automotive infotainment stuff)

It might not be SteamOS exactly, the article I read sort of muddied what exactly was installed.
I found this; https://github.com/teslamotors/linux
and this; https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/features/what-os-does-tesla-use

Sounds like they just use some cobbled together thing, kind of like their cars :P

Quoting: HighballI wonder how much the Tesla vehicles running SteamOS for the games have accounted for. I completely forgot SteamOS going to the Tesla.

Edit: I remember Ford, Chevy, and GM made 10 - 11 million cars a year. Imagine how Linux gaming would be if Tesla produced those numbers and all of them came with a built in Steam Deck. Right now I think Tesla ships about 1 million cars a year. I'm sure the cars with the built in Steam Deck only count for a small percentage of vehicles shipped right now. If I had to sit at a charger for 15-20 minutes once or twice a week, you know damn well I'd be playing a video game. Would I rather be playing my current game or some crappy mobile game on my phone. That's reason enough to buy a Steam Deck or upgrade my car infotainment system to be a Steam Deck. Seems like more reason for Valve to keep all hands on deck for the Steam Deck and it's eco system.

Quoting: slaapliedjeReminds me that I should play more of Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Fantastic RPG.
One of the Most immersive games out there. Combat is a bit weird at first, but once you get used to it, its pretty damn good. Theres ofc a lot of weird/funny jank in the game also, but still. I love the fact that NPCs have their own daily routines. Where they eat, where and what time they work, where they live etc etc. It makes it so immersive to just spectate people about their routines and then rob them clean lol.
First game I recall this being a thing on was either Ultima V or VI.

Ha, Ultima Online was developed with this huge ecology where the rabits would spawn in an area where there was grass, so then the wolves would hunt there, etc... then when they opened it to players, all they did was murder everything they saw... so the developers sighed and removed it so the CPUs were not wasting cycles on something players didn't care about. Really sad statement about humanity...

Quoting: SolarwingGreat!!! But I would love more if the user statistics would be as follows:

For July 2023 the rankings overall are:

Linux 96.21%
windows 1.84%
MacOS 1.96%

Then I could say: long live TUX!!!!! .Well, maybe some day my evil dreams will come true.May that day come soon.
I always imagine in the time where we end up having star ships like in Star Trek, that everyone will be running Linux, as that is what everything onboard is using. GNU/Linux Holodeck FTW!

Quoting: Whitewolfe80
Quoting: kokoko3kI wonder how many "Linux Deck" users would use Linux outside of the Deck.

Exactly that's the point they aren't locked to steam os they could install windows but it's not designed to support the hardware. It's now different to Xbox or ps having their proprietary os it's just more capable than standard console os
That's the point though, right? If companies see the Steam Deck as a target to hit millions, that is a distinct target. The reason that game developers historically have not supported Linux is because it's hard for them to judge how many people are using it as a desktop OS that aren't just developers. Steam Deck numbers strictly show how many people are willing to use it for GAMING. That's why there are more and more companies at least testing out the Deck and Proton to work with their games.

That hopefully means at least AMD Linux users will see a great benefit. Nvidia needs to get on the ball (after running into some specific nvidia bugs with GTK4 and Firefox, I finally switched to the redder side of the aisle.)

Edit: Just had some additional thoughts; the Steam Deck really is brilliant, if you think about it. Valve needed to figure out a way to get out from under MS. So they created SteamOS, which if they had created a standard box themselves (they did this before they had any experience in the hardware space) it likely would have done much better. But with lessons learned there, it makes less sense to have a stationary PC in a living room to try and compete with the PS# / Xbox Whatever. And instead they did a handheld, because the only real competition in that space was either way too expensive for most people, or the Switch.

Quoting: legluondunetIt should happened, Apple is not actually a good platform for gaming.
They missed the Vulkan turn and isolated themselves with their exotic graphics specs.
They didn't miss the vulkan turn, they turned the other way intentionally.
The sad thing is that Linux isn't winning because of Linux, it is because of Apple. Apple killed off a lot of their developer trust for gaming on a mac with dropping all 32bit support and then also switching processor architecture.

There was an announcement for Asahi Linux switching to Fedora. I am hoping my m1 macbook can be converted to a Linux machine soon!
