Looks Like Mad Max Won't Come To SteamOS & Linux

Ha, after seeing that reddit thread where someone made a script to look for all Linux related posts by the guy, there is no doubt in my mind that he's a Windows troll.

His answers to the question 'why doesn't X come out for Linux?' is "what's wrong with Windows?" The guy should not be moderating on Steam's forums with that attitude.

Ars Technica Benchmarks Show Windows 10 Beating SteamOS Performance

Quoting: ricki42
Quoting: Mountain ManThe other thing to keep in mind is that even with the reduced performance, performance in Linux is still more than acceptable and won't negatively affect anybody's gaming experience. That's the problem with looking at benchmark numbers, because you'll see Windows getting 200FPS and Linux getting 100FPS, and everybody says, "Oh my gosh! Linux has 50% of the performance of Windows!" but does it really matter when everybody locks their refresh rate to 60Hz?

This may be valid for Portal, but if you want to run Shadow of Mordor on the Alienware SteamMachine, you'll have to make some serious compromises in the graphics settings to run it at 60Hz. I don't have the data, but the point remains that if you got the Alienware Alpha with the same hardware but running Windows, you'd get better graphics. And while that might not matter to you, it does matter to a lot of people, just look at any discussion comparing PS4 and XB1 performance.
Also, not everybody locks their games at 60Hz, I have a 144 Hz monitor (running at 120 Hz) and I like to put it to good use. Of course, I also have a better PC than an Alienware SteamMachine, so I'm good :D

The point is, most people (sanely) set their options to vsync so you don't get screen tear. Max frames per second never mean anything anyway, it's the damned minimum and average that count.

If I had more time, I'd try out some benchmarks on my system, but then again I'm not running SteamOS, I'm running Debian Unstable...

I do have to laugh at whomever it was earlier in this thread that said that Debian is so slow and they should have used Arch or Gentoo... I seriously notice no difference in speed between the two (actually I run Debian on an SSD, and Arch on a normal hard drive, so for me, Debian is way faster.) I'm just wondering why A) SteamOS still hasn't updated their installer so that it doesn't wipe out your drive. and B) It still shows it as being a beta on their site.

I've got to wonder, does anyone in here have an Alienware Steam Machine? I'm curious if you can install the 4.2.5 kernel from jessie-backports, and what the performance difference is?

Yes, unlike what some people still believe.... SteamOS is basically Debian Jessie with a tweaked kernel and a 'Steam Big Picture' session in GDM. So I'm wondering if going to the 4.2 kernel would improve performance.

Torment: Tides Of Numenera Alpha Gameplay, Delayed Until 2016

Quoting: ShmerlI'm OK with waiting - let them do a good job with it. I didn't back it back then, but I backed The Bard's Tale IV which I'm also waiting for.

I did the same thing, backed the Bard's Tale IV, but I did it with enough cash to also get this game. So I'm waiting for both. In the mean time, I should probably actually play Wasteland 2, I was about to start it, then they announced the director's cut, so I waited for that... and now I have Fallout 4 to play as well, though that requires me to reboot... which I hate...

Sublevel Zero, A First-person Roguelike Six-degree-of-freedom Shooter Coming To Linux

I bought the early access for the new Descent game, unfortunately it's currently multiplayer only, and damned if I could figure out how to fly the ship via the steam controller... this looks really awesome, I wonder how well it supports something like the Saitek X52 Pro though, I think I'd rather use a flight stick than a gamepad for this.

My Own Thoughts On The Steam Controller, Flawed, But Fun

I'm considering picking up a second one, so my brother doesn't have to use the xbox 360 controller, but then he's got really long fingers, so he says using the right touchpad is weird for him and that his finger kind of cramps up. Personally, I think he's not quite holding it right (which applies to a gamepad's ergonomics, not to a cell phone...)

Was playing a bit of the aforementioned Fallout 4 (yeah I know, I cheated) via Steam Link last night. Not sure if it's a case of having two switches on my network (one in my computer room, which my desktop system is connected too, and one in my living room, where the Link is connected to) but there was a bit of degrading in the graphics (similar to when you get bandwidth issues on a youtube video) but I have everything set to Ultra as well...

@liamdawe Odd that you've been having crashes in big picture mode, I haven't had it crash on me yet, but then I have had the Link corrupt the hell out of the video out put! I think that may have been fixed though, not sure. I wish they'd fix the issue of having three screens being mirrored to one screen in the living room....

The Linux Version Of Moebius: Empire Rising Hasn't Been Forgotten
1 November 2015 at 7:08 pm UTC

I think I started a forum thread a while back asking 'where is X' game that was announced, but never came. Specifically about Mad Max. Good to see these guys are still working on releasing this.

Though whenever I see the name of this game, I think of this game; http://www.mobygames.com/game/moebius-the-orb-of-celestial-harmony

Are they related somehow? I still remember seeing screenshots of that one in a magazine when I was a wee little lad, and thought how awesome the graphics were (had an atari 800xl at the time, and they didn't release the game for it, so never played it, even when I finally got an Atari ST.)

Retro Flight Simulators Under The 'Falcon Collection' Now On GOG For Linux

Sweet! I think I still have that massive Falcon 4.0 manual. Never did have much time to play it, but I did play the hell out of F-15 Strike Eagle (Atari 8-bit) and the original Falcon on the Atari ST, pretty sure Strike Eagle was the predecessor to the rest of the Falcon games.

My First Hours With A Steam Controller

You don't have to be in Big Picture Mode, I just tested it with Sword Coast Legends. Steam is in it's normal window on my right screen, and the game opened on my left screen, and my browser was opened on my middle screen.

Granted, the controller was in mouse/keyboard mode, so that wouldn't have mattered for this particular game. But it's still a controller, it doesn't force you to be in big picture mode.

Though I swear someone said that they could use the onscreen keyboard from it outside of big picture, that would be cool.

My First Hours With A Steam Controller

Quoting: omer666Question: does the Steam Link work with a Linux host yet? I would be very interested but I just don't have a Windows partition.
I can use inhome streaming from my Ubuntu desktop to an Ubuntu laptop. So I think it should work with the Link, too.
Great news! I think I'm going to use some spare unit and try it for myself before considering buying the Link+controller...

I can confirm that the Link works with a Linux host. Problem I have with it is that it tries to stream all three of my monitors (so two 1920x1080+2560x1080 squished onto a 1920x1080 screen is just odd...) but while in-game, it does go full screen and work relatively well. Played Mark of the Ninja this way.

Unfortunately the big picture mode in general is buggy with three screens, and some games can't handle it correctly (Ark won't let you choose menu options, Mark of the Ninja continuously is confused and tries to do resolution changes, Superfrog HD stretches across all three screens, and makes me ill watching it...
