Steam Beta improves Openbox support and fixes focus issues with AMD / Intel
7 July 2023 at 3:07 pm UTC
Granted, last night ran into a weird bug where the Steam Controller overlay button wouldn't bring up the overlay... had to go to the keyboard and press Shift+Tab to bring it up.
Ha, using the Steam Deck UI on a 77" screen is awesome though.

Quoting: XpanderThe problems i have with the steam client (desktop):Performance for BPM is pretty crap at 4k on a RTX 2080... been playing on my 77" OLED lately, and moving around in the menus is pretty slow.
-60 FPS capped client. No way to remove the cap
-smooth scrolling is super slow in terms of how much the scroll moves. have to waste my scrollwheel a lot
-friends/buddy window doesnt remember its place on the second monitor on client start (it remembered fine with old UI)
-After 1-2 days of the client running VRAM usage grows without releasing it. client restart fixes it
Other than that the new UI is pretty neat. Text is a bit smaller on my 1440p screen which is nice also.

Skullgirls got review-bombed on Steam after some art changes

For today; the younger generation no longer have a sense of humor and don't understand satire. Life of Brian falls under that same category. Back then all the religious people were pissed off at it (without ever watching it). And These days it's the opposite side that doesn't like it / wants to censor it.

Quoting: scaineThe difference between why it couldn't be made back then vs now is that back then, the racists were pissed off that they were being made fun of and it was showing them how dumb they are.Quoting: F.UltraQuoting: slaapliedjeQuoting: elmapulBlazing Saddles is a perfect example of this.Quoting: slaapliedjeAs far as hating on removal of racist imagery making you a racist? What if it is important to the story line that you are taking out a band of racists, but some sensitivity editor decides that shouldn't be in the game, and now you're just killing a bunch of random people? :Pa good example of that is the series "everybody hate criss" wich have a bunch of racist jokes that are intended to show how absurd racism is, it make fun, mock how ridiculuous racism is all the time, yet it feature racism to show that.
should it be censored too?
Blazing Saddles is a funny example indeed, too many people have always told Mel Brooks that "one could not make this movie today" so he answered "one could not make this movie back then either" :)
Pretty sure Brooks is deluding himself on that point. As someone who grew up in the 70's, the casual but prevalent racism back then took the edge off a lot of the purposefully un-casual racism in Blazing Saddles. You might still be able to make such a movie today, but it would be derided and buried under a sea of angry one-star reviews, much like toning down the panty-line in an underage female fighter in Skullgirls has had the same result.

It isn't about this game. It's about any other game you DO play. This is a slap in the face for those that think they 'own' their library of games, when they can just be patched to break something you like about it, or there can always be a patch that just causes it to crash. It's actually one of the things that I think is going to make it very hard for the Steam Deck, as things can get verified for one patch, then completely stop working with another.
Unfortunately there isn't a fix for this. Sure you can turn off auto-updates, but what if you have a game in your library that has been there for ages, but you haven't downloaded it. You'll always get the latest.

Quoting: melkemindThe reality is that people who are actually upset enough about this to actually review bomb are likely white supremacists themselves, even if they're too cowardly to admit it.I never really played the game, but I think people are missing the biggest point here...
Also, it's telling that they'd get upset over the removal of sexual exploitation of young characters. It's not like they removed all sexy outfits or anything, only predatory depictions of young characters. Why would that bother someone unless they get off on exploiting young girls?
Lastly, there really is no justification for hating the removal of racist imagery unless you're racist yourself. People these days are really good at telling on themselves.

Nearly 40% of Linux gamers on Steam are on Steam Deck

Quoting: CatKillerHa, yeah. When all the rumors that Apple were going to release a VR headset were still going, I had to ask, 'why? They crapped on all gaming but mobile with their recent moves.'Quoting: slaapliedjeFirst they killed 32bit support... then they moved to ARM. Granted I will never understand how the mac got any games made for it... don't know a single mac user that games on their laptop...Don't forget "froze on an ancient version of OpenGL and then ditched the idea of cross-platform graphics APIs entirely."
I chatted to one person that was peeved that they couldn't play games they owned on Macs any more. I said they should get a Deck. They did, and seem happy with it.

Quoting: PhiladelphusWeird. I always assume someone making a game that essentially started out as being ASCII only would be someone who thinks GUIs are for suckers. 😜Quoting: slaapliedjeWeird, I don't even know of anyone who uses Windows would enjoy the detail of Dwarf Fortress. It feels very much like something who likes to do overly complicated things :P Probably why Minecraft took off like a missile, while dwarf fortress has been relegated to hardcore players. (admittedly I haven't tried to play it past an initial 10m or so.)Tarn Adams himself primarily uses Windows, according to the linked interview from 2019.
Quoting: "Tarn Adams"My main operating system is Windows 10, and I use Mac OS X and Ubuntu for porting.

Wow, this is hefty!
Linux 1.44% -0.03%
OSX 1.79% -0.60%
So it's 2.39 => 1.79 in a single month, and this cannot be due to China, or Linux would have seen a similar drop!

Pretty sure the only reason they brought it to Steam was to get some funding so they could develop it full time, make it easier to include a bunch of stuff out of the box, and to get more of the 'normies' to play it. I did find it kind of odd they didn't include Linux support initially in the Steam release, not sure of the story behind that. But you can totally still install it (at least under Debian, I haven't checked other distros yet).Quoting: CGullWhen it does release, I'll buy it.
I'm just glad nobody has yet yelled that I should just run it in Proton.
Up until January 2021, you could play it natively for free. But they've been Windows-only since, presumably focussing on their Steam release and graphics upgrade. I'm amazed that they've landed $7M. Superb.
I mean, it's also Platinum in Proton, so I don't really get the reticence, but whatever - I used to be the same, but since the Steam Deck, I don't have the energy for "no tux" anymore.
The version in the Debian repos at least is 0.47 - which is the last version before they went Windows-only.
System76 reveal the 'Nebula' a new PC case for everyone
1 July 2023 at 2:55 pm UTC
But more seriously, computer components are out of control! I have been building my own computers since the Pentium 200 MMX was one of the best you could get (I think the 233 was top of the line), and even up to maybe 5 years ago, the top of the line motherboard with all the features topped out at 250... now they're up as high as 1500... Sucks too, because we're now at a stage where CPUs aren't getting patched with microcode because they're too old, so stay vulnerable to certain attacks. You're better off running something that's really old, or really new now.
200 for a case... expected. I think my Fractal Design one (which I absolutely love) was pretty close to that, and I've had it a few years.
