Quoting: Marlockthings I'm growing tired of:Add in "Altering art style and censorship of games years after they were released?
1) exclusives
2) exclusives
3) exclusives
4) studio launchers
5) drm
6) anti-cheat
7) stuff that makes me use windows at home (I'm already fuming angry with more and more windows issues on my work machine, I need a safe distance from it while gaming, or it will feel like a chore)
8) "i'll think of crossplatform support later" (and proceeds to use a buch of stuff that will make it impossible), then later "it's too hard to support linux" (and proceeds to blame the OS instead of their own lack of foresight)
9) games that use players as beta testers without warning them it's a beta test (and proceeds to cut Q&A jobs including the ones that would process player reports into dev insights on what to fix)... SKYRIM, I'm staring right at you!
10) huge open ended games (that's a personal issue, I'm a casual player + completionist + short on time, so big games are a recipe for disaster before finishing the main story... if there even is one, and I like when there is one... see the problem?!)
I think I'm getting objectively and subjectively *old*, LOL

Quoting: Liam DaweI am curious about how many people have either set up dual boot, or installed Eindows on it. (In my mind there are zero reasons to, but people will be people.)Quoting: Philadelphus*taps the sign* https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2023/04/report-steam-deck-to-pass-3-million-sales-during-2023/Quoting: finaldestGreat news to see continued support on the deck. I am curious as to how many steam deck units valve have now sold.No official numbers, but there've been some estimates of possibly around 2 million, maybe reaching 3 million by the end of the year. (Source: an Ars Technica article I read this morning about Jsaux and how they become such a big provider of Steam Deck accessories.)

The only reason I could justify an Ally is due to it being quieter. It doesn't last longer, it's a bit faster / higher resolution screen, but that seems to be negated by my give a crap about having 1080p on a tiny screen. Only reason it makes sense for a phone is so you don't see pixels reading stuff, but you're not just reading text on a handheld gaming PC.

Quoting: udekmp69I actually prefer gnome anyhow, especially on a touch + tiny screen. KDE is kind of terrible to use in such a form factor.Quoting: slaapliedjeWonder how many are going to sell off their Steam Deck for the ROG Ally. I think Valve needs to release a SteamOS image for it, since they basically make more of their money on people buying Steam games rather than hardware, but I think it'd be a nice slap in MS's face :P
Keep an eye on ChimeraOS's 43 release when it comes out. The devs have the Ally and have been doing a lot of development so it works on it. The biggest issue is sleep mode not working properly but other than that that's about the most glaring bug in 43. ChimeraOS is really SteamOS-like, starts with big picture mode that runs in gamescope. The only difference is that it comes with GNOME in the desktop mode versus KDE Plasma.

Here's my prediction; the game works with Proton before it's actually playable.
Let me explain... How often have Bethesda released a game, and then patched the buggy pile many times, then come out with expansions to it... but it'll still be a buggy mess, until people start modding it. Skyrim is much more playable after some mods.
Then again, they stopped supporting SkyrimVR...
I'd wait a year to buy Starfield anyhow.

For example; I remember hacking around Ultima IV on the 800xl. You could scan through the disk with a hex editor for your character names, then change sectors to 99 and you'd end up with 99 stats (if I recall the hit points only went up to 800, so in the game you'd see I999, but the two bits were 99 99). In Ultima V on DOS, they made it a tiny more difficult... They were using proper hexadecimal. So 63 was 99. In Ultima IV, I'd pretty much figured out how to decode the entire map, with each square being raw on the map, 00 being deep water, 01 being shallow water, etc. Don't recall all of it now, but I had graph paper out and repaired a couple sectors that didn't copy (I believe the copy protection was the cause of that!). This was all done when I was like 10-11. If there is a will, there is a way... or so they say!
Granted things these days are far more advanced, but look at all the crazy stuff kids do these days with minecraft.

Quoting: KlaasObviously this depends on how obfuscated the original developers made their code.Quoting: shorbergIt is rarely that easy though. It really is. If there is no source code you have to reverse engineer everything or write everything from scratch which is an incredible amount of work (several years worth). Think of all the game engine recreations.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyGames that aren't open source are normal, and there are various reasons that isn't likely to change unless our whole economic system changes. Game engines that aren't open source . . . I kind of hope gradually become eclipsed by ones that are. But emulator things for making old games work that aren't open source are . . . problematic IMO. Especially when there's just one guy doing it. He loses interest or gets hit by a bus and then it just quietly rots because nobody can ever update it again, and so much for preserving the game. Not a basket I'd want to be putting my eggs in.Amusingly, even if something is open source, if someone doesn't maintain the code, it'll stop working. Xkobo is an example, the C source is out there, but modern gcc doesn't like it too much. It's still built for NetBSD 9.0 though!

Does it? I have not tried that!

Quoting: CyrilQuoting: slaapliedjeBut DevilutionX already have gamepad support... Am I missing something?Quoting: Kronos_MOTAs an FYI, if you own Diablo from GOG and use Lutris, there is an option to install the GOG version with DevilutionX right through Lutris.Wonder if they could make it more gamepad friendly with DevilutionX. Then you'd have the best of both worlds, the higher resolution / zoom out of the PC version, with the gamepad support of the PSX version.
That's the way I loaded it and it set everything up for me.
Next I will try the same thing on my Steam Deck and see how that goes...

Quoting: jordicomaI think the mods out there for the games are just retexturing packs and work with the original binaries. It has been a while since I looked.Quoting: slaapliedjeThe X-Wing games... that's one I'm hoping that allows easier modding, etc.It seems it's an optimitzed x86 emu with some system calls/minimum libraries to be able to play the original ones.
So, no modding seems. To be able to mod it needs a new engine with mod support.
Moreover it's not open source. I think it's better to play with scummvm if it's compatible, or use doxbox/x86emu/pcem.
