Quoting: Purple Library GuyTL;DR I don't want to play D&D, I want to play GURPS or Hero System or stuff like that, and even GURPS my group has decided we prefer 3rd Edition to 4th overall (although we import one or two little 4th edition features), and I'm not confident this thing will actually and practically let me do that.
From my understanding GURPS players have pretty much latched onto FoundryVTT, it's the only one that has any sort of 'officially unofficial' support for the system. Thought admittedly it is 4th edition, and not 3rd. We switched to 4th edition for the game we were playing pre-COVID, but there are definitely things I like about it more than 3rd, and things that I don't (like the dropping of PD, and assuming everyone basically just has a +3 to active defenses... like you're still doing the math there...)

The things they definitely fixed that were/are broken in 3rd edition are the languages / literacy. Things they broke though are the indexing / book layout. I maintain 3rd edition has far better layout, and it's much easier to find rules.

Ha, so many Virtual Table Tops. My current game is using FoundryVTT, previous one was using Fantasy Grounds Unity. Amusingly I think FoundryVTT may actually require more CPU resources than Fantasy Grounds... As it uses WebGL, which most browsers will just eat power. I ended up switching from my Yoga 9 setup to my little mini computer, as the battery would drain faster than it would charge...

Immersion Corporation sues Valve over Steam Deck and Valve Index haptics tech

Quoting: FurysparkRegardless of what this may or may not entail, there is nothing you can do or say to me that makes me believe patents and copyright aren't the love children of Hitler, Stalin, and Mao Zedong.
Copyright has been extended many times by the likes of Disney. Not quite as murderous as those three, but they definitely are greedy bastards.

Patents are well intended to make it so an inventor can get some money to pay for the invention, but the patent system is heavily abused these days for ridiculous things, and really only given to people who have the money already.

Quoting: elmapuli know that will sound like conspiration theory, but.. who else thinks microsoft is behind this?
that seems like an familiar situation, microsoft funding someone else to sue...

Ah, the trial where the Amiga was given kudos for having virtual workspaces before Unix.

No it's not, but that is not the issue.

I'm sure you're aware it was said jokingly, but I have to add what just happened to me...

My printer is out of magenta ink and states it can only print black and white. From Windows, I couldn't print (having set everything to black and white), to the disappointment of my little ones. Today I tried it on Linux, and it just worked.

Yes, sometimes Linux is just more user friendly.
My little ones agree. ;)
Printing in Linux is, and has been for many years, far superior to both macOS and Windows.

Though funny story, I bought a printer that supports printing on CDs with labels. It wasn't natively supported by cups at the time, so I ended up buying TurboPrint. TurboPrint now crashes my Laserjet. Like full on causes it to reboot if I try to print with it. Cups works perfectly with it though...

Edit: To clarify; two different printers, the one is an inkjet I bought for printing on CDs is a Canon IPX200 (or something like that), the other is an All in One HP Laserjet/scanner/copier.

Steam gets game trials with Dead Space being first, plus Valve dumps Google Analytics

Steam has had Demos for a long time, but of course it has depended on the developer. So is the Trial just time limited "you can play the first 30m of the game" Seems like it'd be much easier to deal with, that's for sure (from a developer's point of view). Wonder how this works with Early Access games... Like do they renew the trial whenever there is a huge new patch?

Quoting: slaapliedjeOn the bright side you can already install different joysticks yourself. The Oled screen is what I would want. Battery life all depends on what games you play on it.

they have an special sensor on the stick that detect your finger presece, i doubt we can find one on the market with that feature + the hall sensor.
im not sure if i gonna use that feature though.

Sure, you likely lose whatever functionality the touch sensors give you.

Edit: they do support the touch sensor, you just have to use a soldering iron durin install.

Quoting: MohandevirMaybe... Or an actual Steam Deck refresh with better battery and 1tb nvme at the top tier. Maybe put a 128gb nvme in the low tier and the 512gb in the mid tier?

Just throwing ideas...

the things i want to see the most on the deck:

1)sell on Brasil
2)Hall Effect Joysticks (so the sticks last "forever")
3)better battery
4)oled screen.

i was going to say that: if i was valve, i would relase those features in the revisions and only after got all those features and maybe an slim model (especially for japan wich have small houses) think about an steam deck 2.
but now with this competition, droping the price should be an priority.
the original planing (if i was valve) would be something like:
drop the 64GB model to 350, 300, 250 and up to 200.
the others would have an smilimiar price cut.

but that was counting with switch as an competition or small companies like GPD, ayaneo and forgot the last one.
this thing is different the price cuts will have to speed up.
On the bright side you can already install different joysticks yourself. The Oled screen is what I would want. Battery life all depends on what games you play on it.

Quoting: TheRiddickStill cheaper to get a Steam Deck $399usd and upgrade SSD for $50-70 since NVME/SSD suitable are getting a lot cheaper now, its not so much of a expense.

Sure you miss the etched glass but honestly I don't think its worth it given basic LCD.

Quoting: EikeAs usual... Linux is just more user friendly! :D

No it's not, but that is not the issue. Linux can be much more customized and optimized for a handheld and doesn't have MS services and DRM baked in.

Valve technically own their spin of Linux via SteamOS and no other company can come along and go, hey lets insert some analytics here and a edge advertisement here, and weather app over there... lol
Linux is definitely more developer friendly. And I wouldn't say it's less or more user Friendly, all depends on the user!

But as you point out, you can customize and optimize it in a way you can't with Windows. If you watch LTT's latest review on the Ally you can tell a lot of the ways the Deck beats the Ally is definitely because it's optimized for that lower resolution and hardware of the Steam Deck, as like for like in resolution / settings, the Deck performs better.

Which video, this one?
