Zink driver for OpenGL over Vulkan gets a 10x performance boost for DOOM 2016

Ha, at this point there are too many wrappers with various names. For some reason I was thinking Zink was a macOS thing, and was surprised to see the article here initially. Since macOS doesn't actually have Vulkan support directly, I was thinking translating Vulkan to OpenGL makes more sense there.

That's likely where I got that idea.

@Hamish
Did you get an old Joystick for the retro build? I'm thinking Heavy Gear II (I'm not sure if you've done one on that) had a Linux native release by Loki. Would be great to see that working with a flight stick, etc. (I have it buried somewhere).

I'm loving the 'retro computer build' series! I have a stack of Retro systems that would have a hard time running most kernels, though I could likely get a 10 year old kernel on there... I should find a copy of Mandrake...

Quoting: grigiWhom here remembers happypenguin.org ?I loved happypenguin.org. It covered a lot more of the open source engine / free games. Kind of wish Liam would cover more of these gems. Seeing another 'AAA game works with Proton' is getting a little boring. We get it, Proton is awesome and for the most part just plays anything.'
That was awesome some 15 years ago...

Quoting: dpanterHmm. What does "Proton support" mean in this context? Surely not Valves Proton as it must run inside the Steam Runtime to work properly. Custom versions like GE Proton (built to run outside the Steam Runtime) were already downloadable in Lutris earlier versions.Pretty sure Proton can run just fine outside of Steam. I don't recall heroic launcer launching Steam to run Proton. It is after all just a fork of Wine.

Quoting: elmapulHahaha, can't really disagree.Quoting: slaapliedjeQuoting: elmapulI'd say like 90% people on the planet use some drug or another at this point (sure I'm pulling that number out of thin air). Granted most are told to take the drugs by their doctors. But it's really crazy to think about how dependent we are on medications these days.Quoting: whizseQuoting: elmapuleven purchasing used games seems more usefull to me, at least you are giving money to an consumer that might use it to purchase another new game that is still being produced.Too risky! They might use that money for drugs, or worse, mobile games with ads and micro-transactions!
i dont care if they use drugs, but please, dont spend on mobile games with ads/mtx! that is way to dangerous indeed, thanks for clarifing.
btw im not serious about the drug issue.
dude, 100% of the mobile gamers use drugs, they are called "mobile games".
those 'skinner box' mechanisms are an form of drug in my opinion.

Quoting: InhaleOblivionMight go this route in the future one day. Especially since new games are becoming larger and larger. Thankfully SD cards support is pretty solid for the current faster cards.Personally; I play smaller games on my Steam Deck. The ones you can just load up and play quick, and put away. If I'm going to play something long and drawn out, I'm going to just fire up my desktop and play it at 3840x1200.

A fun one that is interesting in that definition is something like DMT, which everyone has in their brain chemistry, but if you take an additional amount... people have reported traveling in other dimensions and conversing with beings that talk in geometric forms... But it's something everyone has some amount of in the brain.

Quoting: EikeYeah Alcohol is for sure is one. Caffeine is as well. I don't think addictive properties are necessarily what determines what is a drug, at least I've never considered it that way. I've always considered it as anything that, ingested or applied externally can have an effect that someone wouldn't otherwise have naturally.Quoting: BlackBloodRumThen there's easily mistaken ones like Alcohol, technically speaking also a drug. Again, people won't think of it as a drug.
That's not "technically speaking", it has got literally everything a real drug needs.
(I don't know how to express it in English, in German, a drug/Droge is considered the stuff that's addictive, should for sure not be used before driving and might kill you, while in English, there's stores full of "drugs".)

Can you imagine if something like World of Warcraft decided to end, and how mad all the people who have dumped their lives into playing it for a long time, and the money people have spent on it? Granted this is one reason of many why I stay away from MMOs.

Quoting: ObsidianBlkWas watching a video about all of the games where the live services were killed off. Makes me think that some of those should basically have some consumer protections in place, like if someone spends X amount of time into it to make it worth the money they spent (including loot box type purchases) that if the company doesn't just go under, but instead cancel a game's support to try to make more money with another one, then they should provide some sort of refund (or bonus stuff for their new game) or something...Quoting: slaapliedjeFallout 76... the game failed so hard that they are now giving it away on Humble Bundle and PS4/5 at the same time.
It's not the greatest game that ever exited, even for a live service, but, to Fallout 76's credit, it's going a lot stronger than many other such games that both released after and died before it has... like... IDK... Anthem? Fallout 76 was never worth it's original sales price, but, it's often on sale for $10, which, even ignoring all the added FOMO stuff, gives you a decent game to wander around in and shoot stuff... doubly so if you have a friend or two to play with.
