Nintendo supports both Vulkan and their own API. However pretty much no one uses Vulkan on Switch because it's not as fast as their own API (understandably, because their API is tailored to their specific hardware (which is nvidia based) while Vulkan is abstract).

This extension came as an effort to solve a major problem with Vulkan and hopes to entice Switch developers to use Vulkan instead.

That said, the extension works extremely well on Nvidia, where every state is dynamic and shader stages are pretty much independent. On other hardware, draw calls using shader objects won't be as fast as pipelines (as Mike puts it, they are unoptimized). So, it's going to take a hardware iteration or two before this is really helpful on anything that is not Nvidia.

You can tell how wrong this is by the fact that UE4 has better windows support, yet they still have to put so much time in to make it work well.

Then reality hits and they're going to whine about Linux.

Yes they are useful in that the application doesn't have to create different sets of pipelines.

With Nvidia, basically every state is dynamic, which means applications can create a single pipeline early on and never have to recreate at draw time.

I have a Pinephone and as much as I love it, it's really hard work to use for actual basic phone calls.

Yeah, Apple is closed to the core, but Android is basically spyware so it all depends on what is more dear to you.

Personally, I've decided I don't need my phone to be an open device I can tinker with to my heart's content, I just need something that works and respects (mostly?) my privacy and that right now is Apple. It also helps their stuff is really high quality, looks excellent and gets updated for years and years.

Don't get me wrong, I see plenty that's awful in their ecosystem, but from my perspective it's the lesser weevil by far.

I'm definitely not interested in turning this into a whole Android vs Apple argument, so last comment and I promise I won't respond anymore:

Apple collects as much data as Google does, if not more.

And I agree, I don't like to be spied on, which is why I have Assistant, personalized ads etc turned off.
