Windows drivers roll out for Steam Deck but Valve won't support it

Quoting: BoldosWould be curious to see the numbers of how many will actually use it...

I'd really be curious how many people bother putting work in to replace a working OS with another, which is always one of the strongest points being made against Linux on the desktop: "Why replace a working Windows?". Now it's "Why replace a working Linux?".

I'd also be curious to see the reaction of people who go "Gah, Linux is SOOOO hard to install", when they have to install Windows from scratch for the first time in their life! :D

XCOM 2's multiplayer being removed but will still work on Linux and Steam Deck

Quoting: PublicNuisanceClosing down servers when they feel like it. One more reason to support FOSS gaming.

You mean the entire handful of FOSS games that are somewhat on par with commercial games?

Bungie has more to say on Destiny 2 for Steam Deck and it's still a no

I said it in the thread about Fortnite, and I will say the same thing here: Developers assuming that the operating system is NOT under the full control of its user and that they can somehow control their system from the outside have no clue about good security practices. No wonder that their stuff gets hacked all the time, because that approach doesn't even work on closed-source systems.

Feral Interactive have no plans to update their Linux ports for Steam Deck

Not surprised. Porting has been going downhill for years now, after Steam Machines turned out to be a bust and larger studios no longer bought in to the idea. We have seen fewer and fewer native ports of games that weren't made by Indie studios.
I know, some people are still clinging to the "No Tux, No Bux" mantra, but in reality, we're unlikely to see another major AAA game on Linux native anytime soon. If the Deck becomes a major hit, maybe this will change again, who knows. In the meantime, Proton is what we've got, and it does the job just fine. Instead of a handful of AAA titles that got selected to be ported, we get to play almost all of them. I don't care what makes a game run on Linux as long as it runs on Linux.

Mina the Hollower from Yacht Club Games hits the funding goal for Linux

Quoting: eldakingI don't much like additional platforms as stretch goals because if you use (only) that platform, backing before the goal is hit is a big risk and for most people already backing they don't particularly care. I mean, I'm happy when a platform I like is funded and included, but doesn't seem like the most effective stretch goal for crowdfunding.

If I remember correctly. KS allowed you to delete a pledge up and until the deadline. You can always cancel your pledge if it doesn't appear that the Linux stretch goal will be reached a day before the end of the campaign. That's not the nicest thing to do, but neither is putting platform support behind a stretch goal, so your moral mileage may vary.

Personally, making platform support a stretch goal typically puts me off the project entirely. I then adapt a "Ok, you Windows users can fund the thing and take all the risks. And if it releases and turns out to be on Linux and good enough, I can still buy it" stance.

Eggnut decide not to bring Backbone to Linux officially

Quoting: BeamboomIs it just me, or do most kickstarter projects with a promised Linux version end up like this? I feel it's happened over and over and over now...

It happens way too often, that's for sure. Reasons seem to be the same in most cases, too. Devs that never touched an OS other than Windows thinking that they can develop a game on Windows for Windows using Windows middle-ware and Windows tools, and then press the magic "Export to Linux" button in their engine of choice when all is said and done, to make their Windows game run on Linux.

It's still mindboggling how people obviously having zero Linux knowledge can go ahead and promise support for a platform they struggle to even install. What where they thinking? Like "Linux is just Windows with a penguin, it can't be so hard, right?"

Taking money for a product you don't even know if you can deliver is just unprofessional.

Tim Sweeney has a point about Fortnite EAC support
9 February 2022 at 7:36 pm UTC Likes: 29

I think it should go without saying that any design that relies on the user having no control over their own system is broken by definition. Game devs are using flawed-by-design tools like EAC instead of designing their game from the ground up to be cheat resistant at the application level, working under the realistic assumption that the user controls the system and can do whatever they want with it. Because that's the problem. Linux isn't. Maybe Sweeny and people like him need to stop blaming an open operating system for being open, and get a clue about good security practices instead?

KDE Plasma 5.24 is out now and what a beauty it is

I didn't really look at KDE in years (I always thought that if I'd want an UI that looks and feels like Windows, I could always use Windows), but I am casually in the market for a new DE, as GNOME hasn't made me too happy in the last years, either. Maybe it's time for another look, I dunno?

Indie store itch.io comes out swinging against NFTs

Good news. NFTs and cryptocurrencies can't die fast enough, as far as I am concerned. What a waste of resources for something that doesn't serve any real purpose, except fuelling people's greed.
