SteamOS updated & Steam Client Beta adds support for 2x scaling for those with 4K monitors and more

4k is still a bit of an issue, so glad to see that they are working on it. I have a 32" screen, and still use 2550x1440 instead of full UHD, because UI scaling is still hit-and-miss.

The developers of game launcher 'Launchbox' on porting it to Linux, due to Windows 10 privacy issues

I can honestly see no need for what really looks like a closed-source version of Lutris. I don't even use that. 80-90% of my games are on Steam, so that's where I launch them from. The only other launcher I am using is PlayOnLinux. The day when Lutris becomes the superior choice for auto-install WINE games with minimal hassle, I will switch to that. But I still can't see the need for another launcher, particularly not a closed-source one.

Quoting: TheSHEEEPEven people who dual-boot are rather likely to pick Windows as they just know it makes most sense.

I think it's the opposite rather. I keep Windows around for situations when something I really want to use isn't available for Linux (*looks at Bethesda*), but given the choice, I ALWAYS pick Linux. I would assume that's true for most Linux users. If someone would rather use Windows, there isn't much reason to install Linux in the first place, no?

It's time to bug Feral Interactive about future port requests once again

Skyrim.

Ok. I know. Beth games are about as likely to happen as world peace.

More realistic choice:

Rise of the Tomb Raider. Don't even ask me why that's not ported yet.

Great that it's out now. I am looking forward to see continued improvements to DX11. I really hope they will concentrate on getting DX11 right, and not open another front with DX12. Who needs DX12 at this point anyway? Barely any game is using it, and from what I have heard it may become a fairly big flop. Developers seem to be reluctant to even want to use low-level graphics APIs and rather stick to DX11, which is deemed "good enough".

The MMO 'Project: Gorgon' has an experimental Linux version, it's not bad at all & free for now

Well, it looks waaaaay better than the cartoonish eyesore that is Albion, that's for sure. I might give it a try and see what it's all about. I don't think it will be a mass-market hit, but their classless system sounds quite interesting.

It's quite funny how the very games aren't getting ported to Linux that would incur the least financial risk. Porting a game is a fixed cost type - it doesn't matter if your game sells 500 or 500,000 copies - the costs of porting it to Linux are the same. But assuming that the game's Linux market share is 2% in both cases, the mass-market game would bring in waaaaay more revenue to offset porting costs and generate profit. If PUBG would achieve 2% more sales with a Linux port, we'd be talking a ton of additional revenue, that would make porting costs insignificant by comparison. What keeps them, really? Personally I don't care about this game at all, but I know that having it on our platform would give us a huge boost right now.

Yes, I know that there is the issue of support costs, which according to some sources we don't look good at, compared to Windows. I really, really think dev studios need to be more drastic and flat out refuse to even look at support requests for distros other than Ubuntu and maybe SteamOS, to keep these costs down. Because this issue seems to be holding us back.

Would be awesome to see AMD becoming a real alternative to NVidia again. I certainly like their way to handle the community better than NVidia's...

Quoting: BOYSSSSSWhat happened to "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."

Probably because it's rubbish. Words can hurt MORE than "sticks and stones".

Also, they have a point. I don't know when it became acceptable for a -business- to use foul language in what's for all practical purposes a -business communication-. One can really see how the Internet and the (illusion of) anonymity there has contributed to the erosion of basic manners, to a degree that even businesses are using it now for professional communication. But hey, what do you expect from a medium where it's apparently acceptable to haul insults and f-bombs at people you're playing a game with.

Quoting: KimyrielleEven if Albion would add PvE content one day, there is still nothing at all I find appealing about it. It's a niche game with eyesore graphics and hardcore MMO concepts from the olden days, which, like dinosaurs, died out for a reason.

Is that why Blizzard is reviving WoW Vanilla? ;)

Of course to attract the masses it helps to ensure everyone regardless of skill-level can succceed. But not everyone likes that. Just like not everyone enjoys the latest dumbed down action movies labeled "Star Trek" which aim to attract the masses.

I really enjoy Albion Online ;)

I know that there are people around who love old-school MMOs and there is nothing wrong with that. But I guess my point was that for every hardcore MMOer who loves open world PvP, perma-death, looting corpses, competing with other players for mining nodes and rare world bosses, endless grind, and super-hard raids, there will be 10 others that will be like me and hate all of the above. It's really about where the money is. MMOs become a mass-phenomena only when developers moved away from that hardcore stuff and made games more accessible for us filthy casuals. ;)
