Get ready to escape again, as 'The Escapists 2' launches next month, looks like it will be on Linux

Agree!
There are a few retro-art games that make use of the style for artistic reasons and excel in it. But a LOT of indie games use it only because they have no actual artistic talent available whatsoever. The difference shows quite clearly...

Quoting: EhvisThis is how I like to see pixel art. Much more detail and colour but still with the charm of 2d pixel art.

The Witcher 3 didn't come to Linux likely as a result of the user-backlash from The Witcher 2

Any person with half a brain and some manners is able to communicate dissent in a respectful manner. Linus Torvalds is a brilliant programmer, but I don't think there is a way to justify his way his behavior in any shape or fashion. He can be a totally rude jerk, and the fact that he invented the OS of our choice doesn't change that he needs a crash course in basic manners. People who think that immature trash-talk is an acceptable way to talk to others just because they can't see your face or have to show theirs, are pretty much a part of the problem. And please don't tell me that Linus Torvalds can't speak enough English to convey what's on his mind in an acceptable way. That's just laughable. The guy is rude because he IS rude.
I get the idea that we as a community sometimes feel screwed and marginalized. I don't like companies not delivering promised ports. I don't like getting badly optimized and untested software. I don't like getting told that there will be yet another delay, because anything but us is more important than finishing that port. I don't like being told that we don't matter. Or that we just should install Windows if we want to play games. And yet NONE of this gives me to right to get rude.
I find people defending these morons every bit as bad as the morons themselves, really.

Quoting: KimmoKMthere comes a point where you have to draw a line and say "this is not okay", and a product that's worse than what was already available (Wine), in my opinion, clearly falls in that category.
As for the majority of outraged commenters, Linus Torvalds has made this same argument much better than I will (defending his harsh language in LKML with retroactive abortations and usage of Finnish swear words because English isn't potent enough, shouldn't be difficult to find) but the fact of the matter is that in the Internet you can't communicate your seriousness with a tone of voice or body language, and non-native English speakers in particular might lack the vocabulary and understanding of connotations to signify they really mean business without resorting to language you wouldn't see offline. I don't know you or remember any messages targeted at an individual person so presumably I didn't follow the unfolding drama in full back in the day, but I can imagine the language in some of the on-topic posts, and that is business as usual.

^ This.
If people think that this sort of stuff is an appropriate way to voice displeasure, they need to go back to their parents and ask them to finally teach them manners. Not only is this sort of behavior completely unacceptable to EVER do, now we even have proof that it hurts the community at large. And while we might never be able to convince the ruder part of the Linux community to suddenly become decent human beings, the large rest of us needs to start standing up to these people and not letting them talk on behalf of all of us, which they do NOT.

Quoting: liamdaweQuoting: KimmoKMAnd what's the point of having a "port" in the first place if it works worse than it does on Wine? Now, some commenters without doubt went overboard, but while Virtual Programming ultimately improved the Linux version, the backlash at the time was 100% justified. There's a good chance Linux gaming would be in a worse spot than it is now if we didn't react to outrageously bad ports (beating Wine performance and functionality should be a barrier every single port should cross), even if we did get an official release of TW3 one way or another.Sorry, but no. The backlash in the form of threats, constant name calling and *insert vile words here* was really not justified, a lot of it personally aimed at people within VP. It was downright terrible and when I saw it, I felt ashamed of the community.

I get why some people don't like Paradox's DLC strategy (Hint: Just don't buy them at full price), but why a proven Linux friendly company acquiring more development manpower should be a bad thing is beyond me. Is there something, ANYTHING the Linux community does NOT whine about? Paradox is the only larger publisher I am aware of putting ALL of their new games to Linux and doing so INHOUSE and not just porting! Their games are top quality, too. And the upside of the DLCs is that they keep adding new interesting features to their games for a long, long while after release, which keeps them interesting and fresh to play for years. Which puts their price into perspective, compared to Random First Person Shooter, which you shell out $60 for as well, play for 20 hours and then uninstall.
Some people are just never happy.

No, you're not too old, you're just over-interpreting the "massive" in MMO. "Massive" doesn't mean that you need a massive amount of people to get anything done. It just means that you are sharing the world with a massive amount of people. You can be a lone wolf in such a game and still enjoy being a part of a large community and interacting with them indirectly, e.g. by crafting or trading. Like in...you know...real life, where you don't HAVE to join an international corporation to making a living, either.
I am not a fan of WoW, but it was indeed the first game to recognize above circumstance. While this game here seems to want to make a point of repeating really every single mistake ever made in the design of MMOs and combining them in one single game. World bosses that can be killed only with large zergs and have insane respawn times to REALLY make sure that only 1337 zerg guilds will ever manage to kill it, for they will be the only ones able to camp the spawn point at the right time and defend it?
I laughed.
And booted into Windows to play a MMO that's actually fun.

It's generally unsafe to hand money to a development team with no proven track record. People doing that need to acknowledge that there is a very strong chance that such a project will fail. There might still be grounds for doing it anyway if people -really- want that project to happen, but they should treat it like the subprime investment it is.
Personally I have backed quite a number of projects, but my personal rule is never to give money to a team unless they have a proven track record as game developers in general AND can show me convincing evidence that they are able to deploy on Linux.

I am totally not sure if this is good news. Actually more the opposite. Square Enix is quite Linux friendly. Until proven otherwise, we have not the slightest reason to believe that IO will be the same. They are a Windows-only studio having made nothing but Windows games so far (if I am not totally mistaken), and it was -Square Enix- that hired Feral to do the port.

I dunno. What's the point of getting nice stuff if you can't dare to take it out of town? That...doesn't make any sense. I realize that this game deliberately wanted to be "old school", but sometimes old school things have died for a reason. *shrug*
