Starting this Summer, iFixit will offer Steam Deck replacement parts

Makes sense that it is 'Summer' onwards for availability as they will need the bulk of components for production to eat into the queue and get the 'After Q2' lot fulfilled. If they weent to early with the spares it would probably rub some people the wrong way if they arent maximising production, even though a percentage of parts will always be alloted for spares and repairs.

Additionally they will be building their own component stock for RMA's etc.

Cant wait to get mine, part of me though is regretting the 256GB choice and should have gone for the 64GB, but who was to know how easy the upgrade of the NVME drive was going to be.

The Steam Deck has released, here's my initial review

Firstly, this is an excellent write-up of your first impressions, so much info and detail, it was great read and up there with the 'Major' outlets in quality, if not more so.

I wanted to address the below as you said you found it peculiar

Quote3). Additionally, sometimes the Deck may report less than a 100% charge as full, Valve explained over email:

If your device has been left on the charger for long periods of time, it may report less than 100% when taking it off the charger. This is normal – we allow the battery to slowly discharge after long periods of time under charge to optimize long-term battery health.

Personally, I find that decision a bit peculiar and will lead to confusion for users unless it’s very carefully and clearly noted.

While no means an expert in battery technology I do work with backup power supplies and we offer Li-ion batteries as an option, and it is pretty standard for these batteries to charge to 100% then self discharge to 80% in order to maintain longevity; in our case this happens over the course of a month but were talking about 100-250Ahr blocks here that are permanently connected to a power supply.

Quoting: Cmdr_IrasFlatpak will certainly make installing Lutris on the Steam Deck much easier, no need to faff with switching to 'Dev' mode.

My understanding is it would work the same way as on Android? So anything will install via steam but dev mode is needed to install any other program ect.

Valve confirmed in the Steam deck developer livestream back in November that you would be able to install Flatpacks without needing to go into dev mode; see below link to the question (happens at 3Hrs 43Min 40Sec)

Quoting: fenglengshunOh, that's cool. I guess the Flatpak full integration didn't make it in 5.10 after all, but still looking forward to test it nonetheless.

Microsoft Edge available officially for Linux today as a stable browser

The only reason I can see to using edge over any other Chromium based browser would be if it supported higher quality streaming on the likes of Netflix.

Feral no longer porting A Total War Saga: TROY to Linux, citing less demand since Proton

Its a shame and hopefully they will port other games to Linux and this is just a function of TROY having been on the EPIC store first.

I will always be happy to pay full price for a native Linux release, however I wait for non-native titles I play through PROTON to go on sale first out of principle.

OpenGL over Vulkan driver Zink gets a huge performance boost
17 June 2021 at 11:06 am UTC Likes: 1

Question I always assumed that Zink was a similar project to DXVK in that it was simply a translation abstraction between OpenGL and Vulkan. But the wording of the above makes it seem that it is a MESA specific. I.e if Im using Nvidia drivers then I cant use Zink to translate to Vulkan like I would DXVK. Or am I missing something.

What have you been tapping play on recently? Let us know

Elite Dangerous has been my goto game for the last 2-3 months. Despite the pains of the latest expansion/DLC it runs well enough via Proton for me to be an enjoyable play.
