Titanfall 2 has a player surge with a huge sale, great on Steam Deck & desktop Linux

I already have it on Origin but keep forgetting about it since I mostly run Steam and hardly ever open Lutris these days. I guess I could just add it to Steam as a non-steam game.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart gets FSR 2.2 and Ray Tracing for AMD GPUs on Linux

Quoting: I_Hate_Windows
Quoting: lejimsterIs ray tracing on Linux comparable to Windows these days?
I just bought a 7900 xtx and plan to have a tinker when I install it.
i have a 6900xt and as far as i can tell i lost no frames at all, seems pretty even with any version of windows now......

Sounds good, Ray tracing perf wasn't a deal breaker for me or I would have bought RTX.. But I'm still looking forward to giving it a try.

DOOM Eternal removed Denuvo and it plays great on Steam Deck

This is one thing I appreciate about this studio, they eventually do remove DRM once they've made most of their money. But on saying that, it's kinda pointless to do add the DRM in the first place since somebody always cracks it pretty quick and it causes issues for legitimate paying gamers.

I enjoyed Doom a lot and finished it, but I haven't been able to get into Doom Eternal in the same way so I stopped playing it long ago... Sometimes I need to force myself to play a game for longer to really get into it.

Wine 8.15 is out now, plus more Wine Wayland work submitted

I was interested in the Track mania bug that was fixed as it's a game I play fairly regularly over the years. Turns out it was an old bug that has been fixed a few years back and nobody bothered closing the bug report 😅

Epic Games' new exclusive deal gives devs 100% for 6 months

I'm fine with time limited exclusives. I just got a feeling some devs were completely going Epic and never bringing their games to Steam. I wish Epic would treat us seriously and offer a Linux client. Otherwise I will say no thanks.

5 years ago Valve released Proton forever changing Linux gaming

I remember testing the early versions of proton when it first was announced. I was messing around with The Witness and the performance had dropped 50% from an early proton release. It was soon discovered they had accidentally released a debug version of proton.
While the wine devs deserve a lot of credit, Vulkan and dxvk was the real game changer in terms of performance. So many titles run at 90+% of native because of dxvk and Vulkan titles often run better on Linux than they do Windows.

Quoting: JarmerDo you know a command to skip the launcher but ensure that vulkan is chosen as the renderer? Every time I play the game I have to remember to select vulkan in the larian launcher because it defaults to dx every single time.

Apparently the Vulkan renderer is in beta and still has big issues like crashes and glitching. Thats probably why it doesn't stick.
Looking at Reddit someone wrote a guide on how to change the default renderer to Vulkan.
QuoteThere is a `preferences.json` file in the `\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Launcher\Settings\`. I changed the `"DefaultRenderingBackend": 1` to `"DefaultRenderingBackend": 2` and now Vulkan is automatically selected in the launcher.

I guess adding the `--skip-launcher` options in Steam will automatically select the rendering backend depending on the value in the launcher preferences json (1 = DX11, 2 = Vulkan). But I do not know how to check if it's running in DX11 or Vulkan when in game so I cannot confirm.

NVK the open source Vulkan driver for NVIDIA merged into Mesa

Quoting: Grogan(That always used to hold me back and get me in way over my head when upgrading kernels, when the Nvidia glue won't compile and you have to wait for them to fix it for the new kernel..

As someone who compiles his own kernels, this used to be a nightmare on Nvidia. Usually hit or miss, going through forums for a solution and all that.

It's nice to see open source Nvidia support becoming a reality, but my bets are on Intel these days, their open source support is gradually becoming a viable alternative to AMD.

I am hopeful Intel can provide some competition as the GPU market is in a really bad place for gamers right now. Intel on paper should offer a really good product on Linux but every time I look up ARC performance for Linux it doesn't appear to be so good. I'm hoping by the time Battlemage is released they will have improved driver support considerably.

Quoting: TuxeeMust have been me. Got the survey twice last month. First on the deck, the second time on the desktop.
Same here, I upgraded my boot drive and reinstalled Steam = got a survey, switched to Beta on my steam deck = got a survey, logged into steam on my laptop = got a steam survey. I can't remember the last time I got so many surveys together.
