Direct3D 9-10-11 to Vulkan translation layer DXVK 1.8.1 is out now
1 March 2021 at 7:44 pm UTC

Anubody could explain me if (and why) using DXVK as a native library could lead to better performance?
Is it the same as using it via .so and not .dll in wine itself?
I've tried and that way the performance are unchanged.

RetroArch announce the Open Hardware project, plus a new fantasy console core
23 February 2021 at 1:58 pm UTC

Those Virtual/fantasy consoles are a nice way to push developers to write efficient code.
Oh well, that runs on inefficient hardware!

Can't fully get it, since we already have a dozen of good emulators for real hardware and people actual still code for them.
C64,Amiga,Speccy scene are quite active those days.

It's officially game over for Rochard with studio Recoil Games shutting

That's bad.
Maybe they can consider opening the source and maybe the assets?
I remember whan i listened to a tune in a Rochard fight and immediately remembered the tune from my child memories, Space Debris, by "Captain", found on Aminet (i think) in Amiga times.

What a blast from the past, Great times.

NVIDIA continues tweaking their work for hardware accelerated Xwayland support

Well lad, I have some great news for you, the article you're replying to has pretty much answered your question to a tee: Nvidia GPUs already work in Wayland, it's just that until now they wouldn't provide hardware acceleration for Xwayland, which in a world where most apps still run on X and thus need Xwayland to run on Wayland, meant there was practically no hardware acceleration on Wayland with Nvidia, at all. But as of the next driver release (470) this will apparently be automagically fixed, which means we Nvidia users can finally try our luck with Wayland.

Quoting: kokoko3kI read: NVIDIA still does not support properly the linux ecosystem.
I read: Nvidia will at long last start properly (?) supporting Wayland as of its next driver release. Half-full, half-empty, you understand.

I think "properly" would mean supporting GBM and not relying on specific code made just for nvidia (see gnome or kwin).
What if i want use another wayland compositor?
But i could be wrong, since i switched to amd and the situation has changed (?)

When i was still with nvidia, and they *finally* implemented gpu offloading, i gained a snappier desktop and lower power consumption by using nvidia just as a mere graphic accelerator when needed.
My poor haswell igp performed so much better doing basic tasks, so in the end this should be not a big loss.

Quoting: kokoko3kI'd prefer qtcurve, but as far as i know the visual configuration tools are no more, so it is a bit hard to craft a new theme.
In the kde4 era i've had a lot of fun making themes with it :)
QtCurve 1.9 from official Arch repos
So, are you able to configure it without manually modifying style text files?
Because for me i just can't click on the edit button as i do for oxygen or breeze, it is grayed out.
Last time i was able to do it was with kde4.

qtcurve-qt5 /usr/lib/qt/plugins/styles/
qtcurve-qt5 /usr/lib/qt/plugins/styles/qtcurve.so

Also, qtcurve window decoration is gone

Am i missing something?

--EDIT--
Yes, i was missing qtcurve-kde :-P
Now i miss just the window decoration part.
Is it available somehow?

Monado now officially OpenXR conformant, gets a SteamVR driver

Quoting: kokoko3kI'm really a noob on everything regarding vr.
Does that means i can use a cardboard viewer and a smartphone as a cheap interface to virtual reality with steam games?
https://www.collabora.com/news-and-blog/news-and-events/monado-update-passing-conformance-android-support-and-more.html

No, at least not yet. Monado can run OpenXR apps that run directly on android. Currently the only "real" example that I know of is this xrgears branch: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/monado/demos/xrgears/-/tree/android

In the future (unrelated) projects like ALVR may create a native android OpenXR client. They face many challenging to make that work, for example with SteamVR on Linux.

Alternative streaming tech stacks for OpenVR games are a possibility, for example OpenVR games -> OpenComposite with OpenXR backend (not ready yet) -> Monado on PC -> streaming (does not exist yet) -> Monado on Android.

Once such a thing becomes possible we will probably make some noise about it.

Quoting: ArdjeI hope this means I am finally going to be able to use my Oculus DK2.

I think that's the hope, assuming that Monado will support the DK2, then it will then become available as a device through SteamVR?
Oculus Rift DK2 and CV1 tracking is currently being implemented by thaytan (Jan Schmidt). His current WIP implementation lives in OpenHMD. More info and demo videos on his blog: https://noraisin.net/diary/

This implementation can be used in SteamVR with SteamVR-OpenHMD.

Monado by itself does not have its own Oculus driver today, but it can make use of OpenHMD for HMD support, so if Monado is compiled with OpenHMD support enabled, the DK2 and CV1 HMDs should work. Further, Monado also comes with another SteamVR plugin that can be used as an alternative to SteamVR-OpenHMD. https://monado.freedesktop.org/steamvr.html
Thank you for the detailed answer, i plain to understand it asap :)

Out of curiosity, is it allowed at least under Wayland?
I wouldn't think so. But I ran into the 'no kate as sudo' issue yesterday as I was trying to edit the mirrorlist on garuda linux as the installer kept messing up something. Vim wasn't installed, Nano wasn't installed... tried kate, but it wouldn't let me open it with sudo... talk about annoying.

Finally managed to get something working.
SUDO_EDITOR=kate sudoedit <file>
